If you're into DiS-friendly bands / acts
does it automatically follow that you have what would generally be regarded as good taste in books / films?
For example, are there many people on here who are into, say, The National* but also read, say, Jodi Picoult or Marian Keyes or whoever?
Discuss, with examples.
*arbitrary example - not everyone on here loves The National, I know

I like dis freindly Killing Joke, Nick Cave, JoyDivision the cure, cocteau twins goldfrapp
/Radiohead etc.....I imagine that this fits with say..... Homer
well exactly
I wonder if there are (m)andy people who like Killing Joke, Nick Cave, JoyDivision the cure, cocteau twins goldfrapp etc... but also enjoy Jennifer Aniston films
*(m)any
Come on form an orderly queue to display your shit taste in books and films.
... and music.
Nah, I reckon not.
I have a fairly twatty, snobbish and fascistic attitude to music, but for films and books, I only baulk at the truly terrible stuff, your Dan Browns or films directed by Paul WS Anderson / late Micheal Bay.
I like to read stuff like Frederick Forsyth or Dick Francis, which I guess is the literature equivalent of stuff like Gangnam Style.
I like Joy Division so I like Len Deighton, rather than forsyth or innes
mind you I was so purile that or a while i was on Gauloise Disc Bleu
Gauloise were smoked in the books and were on a pic of the front of one of them (with a cup of black coffee and a gun (probably an S&W 38 snub nose
But look how pretentiously arty and literary these fags were

although the pretentiousness did not stop there
sobranie black russian were another of my favourates

TUT
When I met him he was on lucky strike
ha ha
that's just as bad
I dont really like films
Find them really dull regardless of their content. I think I've enjoyed about 5 films in my entire life.
Dunno about good and that
but I guess it stands to reason that people who, urgh, scratch beneath the surface for music would do the same for other things
nah
but then whilst I do listen to a lot of DiS friendly music I'm not necessarily averse to the likes of Rihanna, Beyonce or Britney, in moderation.
My taste in films/books is pretty similar so I've enjoyed books by Haruki Murakami and Charles Bukowski but I've also read every single Harry Potter Book.
Can't get much more DiS friendly than Rihanna, Beyonce, or Britney,
to be fair.
Slight side note:
I had this super-targeted Facebook advert the other day saying “if you like Boxer by The National then you might like this book” – but the book was about World War 2 and I couldn’t really see where the National fitted into it at all. Worked to some extent though, as I paid it far more attention than I do most other Facebook ads.
That exact same thing happened to me.
Weird.
No
because I don't think being into DiS friendly bands means you necessarily have good taste whatever that phrase means.
in response to you and hyg
i was toying with putting "good" in inverted commas - yeah I know it's subjective, obviously. not sure what the right phrase would be - critically-acclaimed? Pitchfork-approved? Poncy?
I don't think people who like 'DiS bands' have 'good' taste, I think they just have niche tastes.
And yes, in most cases, those niche tastes probably extend to books and films (people banging on about Michael Haneke, me banging on about Nabokov). But most people have niche tastes alongside fairly broad tastes (people getting worked up about the new Justin Timberlake album?) and that extends too.
In short, if you claim to like poncy music chances are you will be poncy about other stuff, but most people aren't so precious.
see response above!
I thought i liked films when I was at uni
and tried to have a good taste like an utter try hard bellsniff, but I really cannot get with them.
Sitting down still watching something for hours doesn't seem to gel with me.
I don't think I have good taste in books either. Or music to be fair.
Earlier I opened a LoveFilm envelope to find a film called Abandoned.
It stars Brittany Murphy and Dean Cain. Bloody hell, Dean Cain. I'll excuse myself from any further involvement in this thread.
did you watch it?
I think I'll just put it back in the envelope and return it.
I hate it when a film that you can't remember putting on your list turns up.
I swear they just put stuff on there!
We had The Town arrive recently. It was every bit as steamingly awful as you'd expect a clichéd film with Affleck being all blue collar would be.
The thing is, neither of us are particular fans of his and neither of us remember hearing about the film before let alone picking it.
There was another recently that arrived (can't remember the name) and we just sent it back.
well, here's the thing; I only ever listen to music I like but I only ever read books that my friends tell me they think I would like
No.
I like big budget action films (if they're good), run of the mill comedies and fantasy fare. I have incredibly mainstream film tastes. And I barely read at all.
I think, for a while at least, DiS went through a TERRIBLE phase of music
All those fucking animal bands, like Grizzy Bear and Animal Collective and Frightened Rabbit and all the bands with Deer or Antler in their title.
Also at this time, everyone collectively stood around and wanked over the proverbial biscuit that was The National back catalog.
It's getting a bit better these days, and to be fair, most of the DiS albums of the year have been good.
Anyway, I READ THE WHOLE OF INFINITE JEST SO I'M MORE FUCKING INDIE THAN ALL OF YOU
i would say
there is a mild correlation
but nothing more than that
I really couldn't care less about books
sorry but they just do not interest me at all.
Films, I don't watch very many, therefore my taste isn't as refined as most peoples so I just know the usual 'classics' as well as enjoying the odd blockbuster. Because so many disers wet themselves over DKR I'm willing to bet I do not share the majority of DiS users taste in films... at least the blockbusters.
Fast 5 though, WHAT A FILM!
i liek the bit when he drives the car
and it goes VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!
