Daniel Day-Lewis
So, I finally checked out Lincoln the other night. The film was bloody slow and I slept through bits and bobs, but maaaaaan, his performance was once again mesmeric. He is TOO GOOD.
Kid thoroughly deserves all his recent accolades.
This got me thinking - is he the character greatest actor of all time?
I know De Niro gets mentioned all the time, but he has done some real stinkers for sure, whereas DDL continues to churn out masterpiece after masterpiece. Can't think of one dud film he's been involved in (other than that singing one from a couple years ago)
with this in mind, I'm gonna say DDL is the GREATEST ACTOR OF ALL TIME.
who's with me?
other opinions are also welcome
always with thanks

Not sure I've ever seen a film with him in.
What films is he in?
Just checked Wikipedia
I can confirm I have never seen any film with him in.
Can't be that great then...
I realised the other day I have only seen one film with Richard Gere in
Not seen any of his either
Pretty Woman?
I though everyone had seen that
Nah.
Sounds like it'd be a bit boring...
What's it about?
A killer robot from the 27th century
Does it have shootouts, explosions and one-liners?
Yes, yes and YES
Sold?
YES
Give that a watch tonight. Can't wait!
Nope.
acted like a jerk to get dumped by a woman
mesmerised by a man
you've become a terribly dull cretin
i was just providing cliff notes for your threads
those two lines sum up those two threads entirely
also there was one about eating stood up
that's probably something to do with a healthier colon or something
:D
Become?
you took your time
:'D
Di Caprio will be up there by the time he's finished
haha seriously? hes way to attractive and "hollywood"
Name a bad film he's been in
Not including titanic because it's not that bad.
Inception was absolute gash wasn't it?
^ from autofill
Was it fuck
I'm not saying he's bad, he's good
It's just whenever hes on film you cant' help but see famous actor leonardo di caprio. Like in Gangs of New York, hes supposed to be some street urchin, but looks like a fucking supermodel.
It's not his fault he's good looking
To be honest that's why i said by the time he's finished. People can't see beyond how hollywood he is but by his body of work will be looked back on as one of the best. He's a great actor
he's not that good looking
looks like a fucking pussy cat
Catch me if you can
Blood Diamond
He was still good in both of them
Blud Die-a-mond
Ah, you said name a bad film though
don't feed the troll mate
Catch me if you can
Great Film. Di Caprio chooses great films, he doesnt really "own" them though.
The Great Gatsby looks like it'll be shite.
that j. edgar hoover film
don't trust the sample size
He's only been in about 2 films.
he gets on my nerves if I'm honest

The suck it up bit at the end of There Will be Blood is pretty dreadful.
*AMAZING
I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE
fuck
so many great, great moments in that film.
'bastard in a basket'
I ABANDONED MY CHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILDDDDD
I ABANDONED MY BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
One night, I'm going to come into your house
and I'm going to slit your throat.
OUTTA FREAKIN' NOWHERE!
yeah
I think I've only seen There Will Be Blood of his and he was definitely ACTING.
but hes played a different character in each one

Day Lewis is the ultimate method actor
Really picks and chooses his role, immerses himself completely. Has in been in 5 films in 10 years?
De Niro is less picky these days
If you have to completely immerse yourself in the character your playing
doesn't that make you a shit actor?
not really, no
thanks for your input, buddy
Surely an actor who can rock up, skim read the script, choose an interpretation and completely knock it out of the park
is superior to someone who has to stay in character 24/7 for months just to get to grips with it?
Its an interesting arguement
Two schools of acting innit?
People are too easily impressed by method actors
like when Christian Bale lost loads of weight for The Machinist and everyone had a little cry about how brilliant he was, even though it was a shit film, a boring performance and as if losing a bit of weight when you're getting paid six figures to do it is impresive.
it was a good film
and he was REALLY thin.
*you're
Just makes you a method actor I think
Lawrence Olivier once asked Dustin Hoffman on the set of Marathon Man why he had gone without sleep for three days. Hoffman said "to make it look like I've not slept in three days" Olivier said "just try acting dear boy"
Story may be false/enhanced etc

He was good in my beautiful launderette
DDL needs to be in a comedy
Stretch his comedic acting muscles so we can see if he's got the whole package. Brando did it plenty of times.
He's quite funny in A Room With A View
but that was back when he actually had to put effort into impressing people rather than phoning it in for the likes of 11.
its de niro
end of thread really
Or he should do an early 90s Harvey Keitel left-turn
And act in some serious arthouse and gritty underground films with new film-making talent. Enough of these big bloated films playing BIG CHARACTERS like DANIEL PLAINVIEW AND ABRAHAM LINCOLN.
Keitel was a fearless actor in the early 90s, his string of films during that time is incredible.
I think you'll find it's Nicolas Cage
cheers
He is a fantastic actor, but your 'best of all time' suggestion is void because he did that film Nine
Lincoln is great by the way
don't listen to the OP
He's utterly brilliant...
and in relative terms has definitely been helped by the likes of De Niro doing some complete dross.
Can we also talk about how amazing There Will Be Blood is?
not that good in hellbreeder
he's no jook
I love this clip of him from Gangs of New York

Day Lewis is a master of the philosophy "less is more"
He saves Lincoln by the way, which is let down by a horrendously boring first 40 minutes.
Spielberg = the oppposite of 'less is more'
