Is The Internet, Killing The Internet?
Jaron Lanier is one of my favourite modern thinkers. Loving his new book. Quick summary for you to consider http://www.channel4.com/news/jaron-lanier-on-how-to-make-the-internet-pay
(yes, this means I am aware that I am extra evil by default)

Can believe they got a Fraggle eater
to talk about the internet.
Seirously though
1) "wisdom of crowds become lynch mobs" - VERY YES
2) "companies like Google are spy agencies" - VERY VERY YES
All he needs to do was talk about plastic contamination and he's like my kindred spirit.
I saw him do a talk about his last book You're Not A Gadget
Which you might find quite interesting http://www.auricle.org/auriclewp/?p=3909
He talks about YouTube comments as being like drive-by shootings.
saw him interviewed on ch4 last week
he looked and sounded very much like he uses 4chan daily
Can you explain the logic behind the comma in the title of this thread please?
A dramatic pause.
A breathe.
Wouldn't have the effect been better achieved through the use of...
ellipsis?
Yes. But I spent about 4seconds thinking about it. Maybe less.
Is that all we're worth? Four seconds?
:-(
I'm quicker with YOUR MUM
the last taboo: taking a man who looks like this seriously
he collects instruments

I've met a DiSser who look like him
His daughter's shopped into that pic, right?
Shut it, sean
If product is free, it's probably you that's actually the product.
^That's a summary of what he's saying, right?
Either way, I think it's a fair comment. DiS content isn't being a paywall because the site can make more money by selling the eyeballs of it's readers than it can from selling the words of it's writers.
And that's fine. If you're upfront about it. Facebook are pretty brazen about collecting your data for their own purposes. Google are obviously all about their services being ad-supported.
But this Newton Faulkner fella seems to be applying that across the board. He's apparently employed by Microsoft. He mentions Wikipedia in a disparaging way (Encarta will rise again!!!?). Feels like the bit like he's only a breath away from saying that open source projects are evil and that DIY culture is bad.
He might have a point worth hearing, but I don't like the cut of his jib in the slightest.
I say we continue to dismiss what he has to say because of how he looks
FFS you mooks
Does Michael Marshall Smith know that one of his characters has gone a bit Last Action Hero?
If I understood anything in that article, I'd engage with it properly. As it is, I'm meeting you halfway by not making fun of his hair.
I don't know, Sean.
