what seeds are you trying to germinate at the moment? (in this sodding weather)

creakyknees [Edit] [Delete] 29 replies 14:17, 7 March '13

me - basil, coriander, tomatoes, pak choi and assorted leaves.
tonight - smaller tomatoes, mustard, beetroot, kale? (although they are a bit old), sweet pepper and Habeneros

    • very wise I think the easiest way for people to save money for the effort is

for them to grow basil and coriander and rocket

      • I've recently had a rethink on the layout of the garden for my future house

The original plan was a bit of grass and a bit of patio and/or decking. No mud - can't be arsed with gardening and plants look shit for about 360 days of the year.

I have revised it to include a bit of mud for growing veg in.

  • I odn't know creaky, what kind of seeds should I be trying to germinate just now?

I will have a gardens at my disposal as of saturday (north, east and south facing, mainly). Climate is mild and damp (west of scotland).

    PickledOeuf | 7 Mar '13, 14:31 | X
    • I would try coriander, fennel, dill, lovage (unusual and very flavoursome)

mint, rocket, pepetual spinach, tomatoes (if its sheltered from too much wind)

Hey you are scottish.....neeps and tatties :)

      whats the soil like?

I will get myself to the garden centre on saturday morning (I don't think I have enough shalter for tomatoes, but i fancy trying neeps and tatties!) I've not been in the soil since i was a teenager (so yeah, 15 years.) I remember it being a bit... soily?

  • Fuck coriander

It takes over and tastes horrible anyway. Got me some narcissi coming through and flowering, a dying marigold, and a couple of deeply unappetising looking sage plants.

My dream is to have a kitchen windowbox with rosemary, sage, thyme, mint and parsley, and then a bay tree in the garden.

(Don't tell anyone any of this creaks, it's just between you and me)

    Royter-Hatfood | 7 Mar '13, 14:48 | X
    • rosemary thyme sage (and oregano/marjoram)

prefer it much drier(drain it really well) than mint and parsley, so maybe a different box for them.

Sorry corriander is one of my favourates......cant understand people not liking it.....although I know of several others who dont, so you are not alone.

        • you maybe have that enzyme which makes coriander taste bitter instead of sweet?

If so you are very special but also in good company (msmnonipenni also has it.)

            • I've just realised that this article

doesn't actually support my theory aobut the enzyme thing AT ALL. It's not a quirk, it's physiological. I think.

              here, this is better- http://www.nature.com/news/soapy-taste-of-coriander-linked-to-genetic-variants-1.11398

  • recently found out that vietnamese fish mint is the same as what grows in many gardens

my mum has some and because I havnt found the seeds in the shop I guess I will try to do some vegetative propogation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houttuynia_cordata

As soon as I can find a cheap source, I will be growing some dahlias......to EAT.....the tubers (apparently yellow pompom types have the best flavour)

  • this year I am determined to become self sufficientish in tomatoes

after finding out that tomato puree labelled as produced in italy were in fact just shipped as puree to italy from china, had some water and salt added and exported from italy to UK.

I need to be sure of my tomato provenance (that is my - middle class crisis competition entry)

  • great thread

Gardeners Delight Tomatoes, some hybrid climbing Courgettes, Little Gem Lettuce, dill and garlic.

Need to get some coriander and basil seeds, and have some beetroot to sow when the ground can be guaranteed frost free. I'll get some seed potatotatties off my papa as well soon. Still enjoying last year's crop, which means i must nearly be a proper gardener.

Missus has half a dozen different flower seeds germinating too, but I can't remember anything other than poppies.

Our bulbs have started coming up this week too, exciting times.
