this is the cricket thread
too late for indie English milksops obv.
and you're 40-5
a situation clearly too volatile to last
and making his debut for new zealand
Watched a (nearly) full day of terrible English cricket, without planning too. NZ looking untroubled.
I would have been amazed if we drew even one of the tests.
NZ have needed a day like this for a while
Lying on the grass bank on a hot day with a few beers. Perfect.
was not made idly
everything else :(
not often we get centurions, let alone on debut.
Let's clean that tail
i think i've soiled myself
And a damn good centuary, too.
That place seems to have the climate of Inverness
What you want is the Basin Reserve in Wellington. Nice sunny day, no wind*, sitting on the bank drinking, everyone singing "if you still hate the Aussies clap your hands".
*Of course, there are only 2-3 days like this per year in Wellington, so it's more likely to be grey and 10 degrees with a windchill factor making it feel like -5. But it's still a better climate than Dunedin.
Time for the captains to shake hands?
But generally, bat on, make up for the lack of prep before the first innings by getting some batting time in now
what a silly pitch.
then try to snaffle a few quick wickets to seize some momentum for the next match. Gives the crowd something to watch, at least.
but it's the first test and McCullum etc
Lead is 74 with 40 odd overs to play. Bat bat bat.
But yeah, it's effectively 82/4, no messing about just yet.
Long may this continue
I'm off to bed now so we'll see in the morning. Smart money's probably on him being not out at the end, but only having added maybe 15 more runs.
Obdurate, stodgy, 1.89 RR 5th day test cricket <3
10-15 more balls faced each from Bell/Prior and it's comfy
he's ticking the score over despite circumstances. Stretched it to effectively 125/6 which NZ would have to chase down in 16.
They'll bowl 4-5 more overs and draw it I reckon.
Well done Finn.
Yeah, noises. Draw. Done.
I think you tempted fate Gorky with this thread title.
Harmison is quite literally repeating everything Colly has just said but in a slightly different way. Funny.
but I genuinely hope he's repeating Collingwood's mackem wisdom in a geordie twang, word for word
Might be worth compiling my list of all-time-most-hated Aussie cricketers:
1 - Ian Healy - Stylistically the ugliest batsman to ever lift the blade.
2 - Shane Warne - frosted-tipped, hyper-macho stereotypical Aussie battler and famed sex-pest.
3- Greg Dyer - "Dyer the Liar" cheating prick.
4 - Trevor Chappell - no explanation required.
5 - Steve Waugh - the HARD MAN of cricket, basically a stone-faced golem creature with no discernable mouth.
6 - David Boon - hideous homunculus, great player though obv.
For balance, ones I like:
Michael Slater, Dean Jones, Craig McDermott, Rod Marsh, Benaud.
just a cock.
Great batsman, complete cunt
punter n'est ce pas?
"We'll look back on it in a couple of years' time when we're back to number one in the world and say [it] was a defining moment," Arthur said.
My favourite is still man with sax who peaked out of a box in a cricket ground to perform Carelss Whisper.
This is easy batting, little to nothing for the bowlers. It'll be good for Compton to keep his form going and continue to establish himself as an international cricketer.
doesn't get intrusive if the cricket is actually entertaining and jiggin' my leg up and down in time is the only thing that has kept me awake the past hour or so.
compton looked positively flowing just after lunch, turtled up properly again now though.
im gonna catch that rat.
woh woh wooooaaaaaaah yeah
woooah yeah yeeeaaah
At the risk of sounding like a reactionary TMS tweeter, no batsman should be getting out in his 70's with a shot like that.
Prior's so great to watch.
if we can power up to 450 and have a few overs before tea at them it might be better for the game any road.
Forgetting how he's now basically Steven "Rahul Dravid" Finn.
Ah, there's Prior gone. Such a selfless guy. What a catch!
and got a bit excited, such a weird shot.
some talk that the weather they're expecting has been pushed back to day 5, it's all coming up milhouse.
The man generally takes quality wickets. He's getting stick for his batting at the moment, though that may be because he's concentrating on his bowling.
fourth stump line on a good length is exactly what he should be bowling, couldn't be happier for him. disappointed that there's no SA series on the horizon now, would love to see another go at them with all three seamers in form.
another 10 now
i might get into it
During winter it works with nocturnal/insomnia really well. I do so much reading when England tour in the winter.
Hmmm... to follow on or not? That is the question.
Personally I would bat. But I think the decision lies with the weatherman.
monty clapping in the background with a sheepish grin on face focus pullling in to stuart broad shaking his head and walking back to his mark. lolled.
the follow on is always a good idea
Probably a good weather conscious decision.
It was a surprisingly packed and fun atmosphere.
That's all I have to contribute to this thread.
85 balls, 21 4s.
watch the highlights, it's an absolute beauty. michael clarke's face is going to be just one big crease soon. looks like he's crumbling from the inside out.
this guy's the new Haynes, Langer and Gower combined
'free-flowing' doesn't even start to cover it. and as cricinfo keep saying, everything hit along the ground too
mind you the pitch is a road
fucking elemental stuff Tacceh, sort it
and skipping down to drive the spinners through cover <3, i'm going to keep this on my virgin box forever. good week for lefties, less so for groundsmen.
Fewer wides, admittedly :D
dhawan hit a six, he's like all the others really :(
then he bowled two waist-high howlers, like my bowling that :D
their best spinner is clarke. get yersel' on, foo'
this lad's from mars
This is an amazing stat.
England struggling for a plan here. It's all wishing and hoping.
and yet he's probably going to get 200
as are his on-drives
hilariously awkward, wristy cover-drive mind, it's like his arms are too long for his bat
big, leg-side ape man. there was one hoik over midwicket yesterday that was one of the ugliest shots i've ever seen, he went down like an air cushion deflating.
part of me wants NZ to win this
Feel the wrath!!!
take that Bob Aaron from Scunthorpe!!!!!
he gives it a really hard s sound on the sion.
DI SI ZHUN. sort it out lloyd.
in the second innings in nagpur. just had a look, he hit 20 off 56 balls for a strike rate of 35. BLISTERING STUFF.
he's shown the ability to score at a fair rate in ODIs and T20 matches. It's just too easy to get bogged down in Tests, particularly when the rest of the top order has failed and you're still to some extent playing for your place in the side. He's a good player, the ability to dictate the pace of a Test match will come with experience.
it's just one of those fallacies that goes round a commentary box.
people keep going on about how short trent boult is too, looks about anderson's height to me.
anyway, this is a bit of a mess isn't it? Panesar's hopelessly rigid in his bowling style, the top order's too one-paced, Bell still can't be counted on when it matters after all these years, and Broad might once have been a number 8 but he's not now.
Well played NZ though. Trent Boult looks like a bit of a prospect doesn't he?
you dont like me and I dont like you, but you're all Ive got, so lets get this party started.
A 35 over assault and then put these milquetoasts int0 bat = BOOM series victory.
getting a bit silly, especially as you're losing by a long long way
15/8 right now
You will win this if there are no interruptions. I fear England don't have the experience with Compton, Root and Bairstow in the side to bat for long enough to force the draw.
playing for the draw surely...and too much time to eek out
420/drinks in the afternoon session?
given current RR
Varun Chopra knocking the runs off - 163 of them - for the Bears against the MCC today. Porterfield knocked 162 as well.
time to put the hammer down
I don't know, he doesn't even seem to time his better shots

anyway 'jesus Fulton is looking great now hahaha'
still, my point about his on-drive :P
Might as well pack in now England and head home, there's nothing to see here, might get home on time for Neighbours.
Fuck Trott has just gone. 100% game over now if it wasn't already. England have been very average this tour, but NZ have been terrific. Fully deserved when they win.
absolute jaffer that.
Love it when that happens.
also the complete lack of sleep.
good innings that, hard lines.
8 an over is doable
Was in bed listening to TMS but so nervous I've come downstairs to watch it. Granted, those nerves are in part due to my moving abroad to S Korea tomorrow, but I'm putting at least a little of my nocturnal evening down to that superglue Prior put on the bails. And Broad's ability to consistently miss the edge.
was one of the funniest on field cricket things in a while.
I don't think I've ever had the giggles quite so much. Just thinking of that dive is making me laugh.
fucking hell my are teeth chattering. matty prior is the best allrounder in the world, MONTY. won 30 quid too!
How on earth am I supposed to get any sleep now. Stomach is all twisted.
When his glovework was constantly questioned and his was a bit hit and hope with the bat.
Like a different player
awesome display by England though.
Would have been happy with one drawn match at the start of the series, let alone the whole thing so hey-ho!
But NZ you'd hope will be really good in a few years with all the young players; Rutherford, Williamson, Boult, Southee, Guptil when he's back and that Mclenaghan looked really good before the tests too
fucking hell, hope he's alright.
He should be in The Libertines rather than being a cricketer
saying that maybe he just fancied fried chicken in the early hours and got a bad break. do hope it's not as bad as it sounds for the big lad.
But he was still in a bar the night before he was due to fly off to start his IPL contract - doesn't exactly scream teetotal professional
"Dad bounced when I was about 14; he just took off man. He just dropped me off at a mate's one day and said he'd see me in a week. He never came back".
that description of the attack is not pretty reading either.
I once drank a bottle of vodka with him in the school carpark, only for him to then go and play for the team and hit a century.
His alcohol problems stem way back and he's human like all of us, he has issues and unfortunately a lot of it seems to stem from his shocking upbringing.
i went to school with him. sure, he could be a bit of a dick, and dished it out a bit, but there is absolutely no excuse for this. this is disgusting and shocking beyond words. he's fighting a lot of demons at the moment, i really hope he pulls through.
