forever? until the oil runs out? until when?
unless "they" is the new alien overlord breed
like the overlord historians that made and have been monitoring the universe
so we won't technically be Homo Sapiens any more.
Can't see them bothering to come up with a different source. So that's like, what, 50 years? Or does someone on here actually know how long that's gonna last?
So yeah, another 50 or so years will be fine
It's permanently 50 years
Unless Brian Cox and the science cronies have been lying to us.
I'm going with 4356 years tomorrow.
But I don't really understand the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics in relation to the Big Bang and everything so what the hell do I know?
There will be a point, called the singularity, where we will create an AI as powerful as us, whether or not in our own image. And it will suddenly make us completely different. Beyond that, it's impossible to predict.
Current projections see it happening between 2030 and 2045. So within out lifetime. It could mean wars, famine, death, but also possibly immortalisation and sudden ability to travel into interstellar space.
when i'm 50 years old we'll all own flying robots that will do our bidding? that's what you're saying?
let's not be saying things we might regret
then the Reapers will get us
It is accompanied by the scratching of the chin and a look that says plainly that you think the other party is talking absolute tosh.
(DiS user Stealthy always looks like this.)
this sounds suspiciously like something a prick would do.
It's not something you'd do with strangers, more your mates.
which if you agree with john searle and his theory of the chinese room you will think is impossible.
Also the machine in question will need to be able to produce more machines more intelligent than itself etccc.
I dunno, i'm kind of sceptical.
yay, and yes that is a really good thought experiment. it's coloured a lot of my thoughts on the matter.
not theory, duh. sounded shit when i was typing it
just to put that into context, the high speed rail link between london and birmingham is estimated to be completed in 2032.
WHAT DO YOU KNOW
It is going to be pretty difficult to sustain both New Human and Old Human in the same Earth. I believe a certain chosen few (Fingers crossed I have done enough to promote Dino-Lore to be on the list) should stay behind on the planet that was not built for us to teach our ancestors how to adapt to the world we have created in their absence and the rest of New-Humans (Nh)should be sent to the watery prison when we cast our ancestors all those thousands of years ago.
A boy can dream
Or beings that are Humans?
that was a thing that happened.
And everyone dies of boredom.
before swiftly realising there was no way I could be bothered.
We're a very successful species and, with the odd hiccup (some famine and pestilence there, the odd bout of anti-enlightenment there) ours has been a history, albeit brief one, of exponential progression. More likely to be wiped out as a species by a one-off and largely unforseeable extinction event than we are any problem we can currently conceive of.
They were fucked from the word go, mate.
If we're even as successful as the shittest dinosaur (whatever that was) we should count ourselves lucky.
Makes us better than the T Rexes don't it?
They just did fuck all for a very long time.
Where was their technology? Or medicine? Or philosophy?
Dinosaurs were just a mindless bunch of pricks who did nothing for no one.
zombies could have done the same
Have some respect.
then we wouldn't be in this pickle
I reckon they built dino cities
Not about the emperor who guides mankinds through space with his brain as he's fed souls - More that mankind will spread wide across the galaxy in various odd tribal pockets, interbred and strange, all over the shop.
Now we've made it through that whole Mayan thing I can't really see anything stopping us
We're having such a good time,
We're having A BAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLL!
Skynet is actually real http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skynet
AI and robotics are improving all the time.
THE STARS ARE ALMOST RIGHT
I kinda struggle to believe that humanity actually exists.
But beyond bedwetting and handwringing about THE NEWS, the whole thing of transhumanism and 'participant evolution' towards a posthuman being (and what role humanity plays within that, ) is kinda fascinating. Whether transhumans should be backward compatible (does it count as eugenics if they're not?), and so on...
depending on the amount of nuclear detonations/leaks of radioactivity/biologicals and chamicals. coupled with compromised immune resistances and abandonment of any restriction on burning stuff and consequent atmospheric pollution I guess that humans might well die out in next 150 years........but they could survive in pockets and struggle on in a new social form
a cyberpunk dystopia, just what I've always wanted.
into something other than Homo sapien sapiens?
Will humans ever actually evolve any more now that we have fire lighters, jetskis, cloaks and calpol?
The (sub)species/evolution question was genuine. Does anyone here know?
but there could be any number of things that get in the way. Massive nuclear holocaust event, a virus that infects us all, meteor strike for example. This could cause a mass extinction especially if we have no summer for a couple of years and food becomes scarce. I suspect whatever happens we won't die out entirely, but we could end up with a small population living essentially wild and it wouldn't take many generations to lose all memories of the old way of life, they would effectively live like Aboriginal Australians.
even if you had to reinvent stuff for the second time. say the internet was wiped out. the same discoveries could be made. you could remake cities
If woman can survive, they may find..
In the year 3535
Ain't gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lie
Everything you think, do and say
Is in the pill you took today
In the year 4545
You ain't gonna need your teeth, won't need your eyes
You won't find a thing to chew
Nobody's gonna look at you
In the year 5555
Your arms hangin' limp at your sides
Your legs got nothin' to do
Some machine's doin' that for you
In the year 6565
You won't need no husband, won't need no wife
You'll pick your son, pick your daughter too
From the bottom of a long glass tube
In the year 7510
If God's a-coming, He oughta make it by then
Maybe He'll look around Himself and say
"Guess it's time for the Judgement Day"
In the year 8510
God is gonna shake His mighty head
He'll either say, "I'm pleased where man has been"
Or tear it down, and start again
In the year 9595
I'm kinda wonderin' if man is gonna be alive
He's taken everything this old earth can give
And he ain't put back nothing
Now it's been ten thousand years, man has cried a billion tears
For what, he never knew, now man's reign is through
But through eternal night, the twinkling of starlight
So very far away, maybe it's only yesterday..
look at all that gay glittery shit on him
my immediate reaction is "optimistic bullshit", and a weird desire to see whoever is saying it dying at the end of the world whenever that comes.
