Mattress buying
Hello, grown-ups of dis. I think I want to buy a mattress.
Who owns their own mattress?
We're did you get it from?
How much did it cost?
What sort of mattress is it?
How did you choose the right one?

Only bit of advice I have:
don't buy a mattress from Ikea
we're pleased with our ikea mattress
however don't buy any bedding from there, it's dreadful.
this is our mattress
http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/50156292/
I got mine off Groupon.
It's incredibly comfortable.
If you can afford it: Memory Foam
If you really can afford it Tempur Memory Foam
http://uk.tempur.com/mattresses/Mattresses,default,sc.html
I heard somewhere (I think it was on here) that memory foam isn't very good for *ahem* young couples
I've always wondered this
I guess you need more "bounce".
Whatever you do though
Don't get Tempura Memory Foam.
A step too far.
Don't buy memory foam at all
it's dreadful. It sucks you in and makes it really difficult to roll over at night and it devours any fluids that come out of you like a thirsty pervert.
Agree with this...
^this
They make me sweat like nothing else...
Really?
Oh bugger, it's kinda been a bit of a dream of mine to get a memory foam and sleep like a baby every night.
KGB Deals
Its a memory foam one. It was £185 (supposed to be £800). Its comfy.
Deams memory foam mattress
Was one of those stupid 'deals' that isn't reallly a deal because it's never at the original price. About £600 down from about £2k.
Quite a lot of money, but I figured that it'll last and be worth it in the long run, plus I had 6 months interest free loan (so paid about £80 a month instead). No way that I'd have bought one that I couldn't try in a shop.
I have just today received a new one from John Lewis:
http://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-value-open-mattress-double/p231293602
£85. Can't tell you what it's like, yet, I'm afraid.
I've just bought a new bed.
still need to get a mattress.
yeah.
(good thread)
Bought a new one last year from ikea, about £250 and comfy as fuck!
Go to an actual shop and try them out first, obvs.
We bought a bed AND a mattress a couple of years ago. It was VERY exciting.
I'm *sure* we got them both from Dreams, though I cannae remember.
I have no memory of how much it cost, maybe like £800 for the bed frame and the mattress? I think it's an orthopedic one. Though again I dunno.
Also, I fucking HATE memory foam.
I just can't get on with my. My bed at my parents' house has a memory foam mattress on it and I never ever sleep. Though I guess it might have something to do with the fact I sleep there very rarely.
I'm not keen either
I wonder if you get used to it over time? I like an old fashioned bouncy one (WAHEY)
oh yeah?
I like it firm (OIOI)
I like to alternate between firm and bouncy, to be honest. I'll take anything, so long as it's not too soft
(WOOOOT)
If there's any way you can afford it
get a latex one. They're expensive but they're just about the best thing in the whole world. Think of it as an investment in 25 years of the best sleep you'll ever have.
I've got a latex pillow and it's pretty fucking great
does anyone else ever read their posts back to themselves
and think what am I doing with my life?
...and so we return to sploshing.
Get pocket sprung if you can.
If you can't get memory foam on the mattress, you can get toppers separately.
Can't remember how much it cost, but I think my bed overall was about £600. It's well comfy.
we went to a shop and spent a few hundred quid on a matress and it's pretty brilliant

That's mega near my old house!
near that place with the shark in as well innit
I have a smashing mattress.
I spent approximately 6 internet hours researching it. I don't remember where I got it or what it's called.
Really can't wait
To buy a good mattress
our mattress is a ten year argos cheapie.
needs replacing.
fucking hell, though.
already this year i've... bought a new washing machine to replace the knackered one, had to have the plumber and locksmith round, had work on the car done x 3, need the split bath replacing, have barely had a drink this year and been doing sporty stuff three or four times a week, changed energy suppliers, rejigged my broadband contract, thinking about buying a bike rack for the car...
...grown up stuff is bullshit.
i wanna go back to being a drunkard in a rented hovel.
Independence is only a single referendum away tbf...
:-)
my advice...
pocket sprung, the more the better, these will stop the roll together that you get with open sprung mattresses. Integrated Memory foam topper will give some extra comfort so you can go for a firmer mattress, you can buy these as a separate though. You can spend anywhere from 100 to 3000 gbp on one, but should be able to find a halfway decent mattress for about 300 gbp. Ikea mattresses are not standard sizes and you are then limited to using their frames and bottom sheets as I understand. I spent about 2 days looking into this. Also the life of a mattress is about 5 years. Having a decent new mattress and fresh new sheets is just about one of the best things in life. Try beds247 on the internet I found it to be the cheapest.
This is very useful
Thank you.
you can get ikea mattresses in standard sizes
and their 'non-standard' sizes aren't far off. we use john lewis bedding on ours and it fits fine.
One other thing worth noting
is maybe going into a bed shop (dreams, harveys, whatever) and trying out lying on the different strength mattresses to get a feel for how they are with your body, unless you already know how soft or hard you want the mattress to be. Also on the memory foam thing, it's waay too soft for a lot of people. And can't comment on the young couples intimacy thing with memory foams as only have had a pocket spring, but surely the far bigger problem would be the frame being not that well put together?
My answers are:
I own my own mattress
I got it from Warren Evans
It cost a few hundred quid but I can't remember how much exactly
It's a kingsize pocket-sprung mattress
I tested them in the Warren Evans shop in Kingston
