I am not sure what constitutes an action film. I guess there is a lot of cross genres that can go together with this.
I have had about 6 hours sleep over the last few days.. :-/
Not sure about the rest
are all guaranteed.
Die Hard with a Vengeance
Running Man, Total Recall, Robocop, Die Hard, Predator
i end up just listing Aliens and a load of Arnie
Aliens, Demolition Man, Terminator 2, Commando, then I'm not sure
then the one with the surfing
7.Gone In 60 Seconds
'best films with monosyllabic titles' list.
I really hope that's not a threadsmash.
It's pretty much just a list of McTiernan, Verhoven and Cameron classics going up to 1996. Lame, sorry.
Die Hard 4.0?
i should only enjoy one film by a director and disregard the rest of their work
He didn't direct Die Hard 4.0, you complete numpty.
I have no idea where you got the idea that you should only watch one film by a director. I definitely put classics with an s on the end to imply multiple films by each director. But, and here's the tricky bit you were having issues with, that also means they have to be films that those directors actually directed.
This, however, is needful: Take your day-glo pushbike and fuck off. :D
*shoots theo between the eyes*
so i named a film that was made after 1996 and wasn't made by any of them to highlight the wrongness of what i thought you were implying
i'll pop your toys back in the pram when i've got a sec
You can see why I was a bit confused what the fuck you were on about, then. :D
lets do it on a boat like Van Damme in Double Impact
It's just never going to be in anyone's top 10. But, come on, the dude takes out a helicopter with a car!
no wind up
Same sort of thing for me. Sure True Lies should be in everyone's top 10 and DH4 just isn't up there but I like my action to be ridiculously light hearted.
and its got some ropey looking special effects in it
action films are all obviously pretty ridiculous but it really is exceptionally so - like too far, so it's not even entertaining any more
And I'd say DHWAV is only about half amazing, the other half pretty weird, including some terrible effects with the water rushing through the tunnel.
even if they weren't originally written as die hard stories, there were just other properties co-opted and adapted into the die hard universe
die hard 4, and from what i saw in the trailer of 5 were more like what a teenage boy would write if he was doing die hard fanfiction having not seen any of the others all the way through
and it makes Die Hard 5 look like a masterpeice
Die Hard 5 makes it look like a masterpeice
5. A Better Tomorrow
6. The Bourne Identity
6. The Killer
7. Hard Boiled
8. The Bourne Ultimatum
9. Hana Bi
10. Assault on Precinct 13 (original)
I think my Chow Yun Fat list would go The Killer > Hard Boiled > A Better Tomorrow, but they're all good. Nice to see Hana Bi get a shout too. Love that film.
it's a perfectly respectable cop thriller. there's only two or three gun fights in the whole movie!
really though, it's a much better film than number ABT2 but only one of the films makes me grin like a nob. even the exposition scenes in the second one are full of explosions and violence. i don't actually remember anything about ABT3. it's in Vietnam or something isn't it?
the last one was disappointingly low
Although it might be a comedy, it's hard to tell.
If so, that one.
1. raiders of the lost ark
3. beverly hills cop
4. die hard
6. terminator 2
8. top gun
9. the raid (maybe)
10. lethal weapon
indianna jones 3
kill bill 1
I'm classifying Indiana Jones as 'adventure', along with Star Wars and Back To The Future and that type of thing.
I feel guilty for including Aliens
and want to complain that Terminator 1 isn't an action film
a vietnam-style war film
The Terminator and Alien are both thrillers, along with films like Jaws and Jurassic Park.
and keep it to yourself but Die Hard isn't all that either
Hope this never gets out at school.
Any top ten list needs to include some Arnie (Predator), some Stallone (Rambo) and JCVD (Bloodsport).
I have a soft spot for the Rock...film and wrestling superstar as well as Con Air.
That's going on my list.
2. Under Siege 2
The Running Man
then like some others and stuff
Once Upon a Time in China
Last Boy Scout
The Raid would probably edge in as well
probably not indie enough but I did my best
Is The Rock any good? You know, the Alcatraz film rather than the wrestler.
in no particular order (favourites NOT best)
A Better Tomorrow 2
Hong Kong Godfather
Raiders of Atlantis
In The Line Of Duty 4
Death Wish 3
period kung-fu films don't count.
bump Hong Kong Godfather or Raiders of Atlantis for that
like I wouldn't call, idk, Hero an action film, but Once Upon a Time in China I probably would
it's got a lot of action and everything but i doubt you could really sell it to someone expecting Die Hard. it's got loads of politics in it and everything. i like it a lot though
period martial arts films should probably have their own list
might watch it later
looking it up it turns out it was the greatest action and war films of all time
still, there's only one actual action film in the entire list
there's like 3 westerns, a load of thrillers, etc etc
i'm not saying that they're bad films but COME ON
"I'm not saying they're bad films" :D
that's just about the dumbest thing I've ever read.
YOU DA MAN
so I'd just like to give a shout out to my leftfield indie bellend choice - A Bittersweet Life. Love that film.
1. Total Recall
4. Starship Troopers
5. Terminator 2
6. Matrix (although matrix2 had more stunning action scenes)
7. Avengers Assemble
9. Tom Yung Goon (or the protector, or Ong Bak 2)
10. Goldern Eye or die another day etc
11 die hard
12 preditor 2
13 police story
14 the good the bad and the weird
16 the dark night
(I honestly cand do an order for them, or keep to 10
Talk about male privilege!
In rough descending order:
The Long Kiss Goodnight
con air ten times
ok MAYBE hard boiled too
Is Escape From New York an action film?
why am I the first person to put Face / Off! I thought everyone liked that. Or at least admired it's utter ludicrousness
probably not quite enough action to qualify but then again who's counting. i consider it kind of a moody sci-fi film noir
I have no desire to watch any more action films after watching The Raid, it is the pinnacle of the genre. Kthxbai.
that's the #1
what the fuck is wrong with you all?!
the only good ones are where the action itself becomes a sort of semi-abstract art (ballet, if you will), cue cementimental's post about hong kong actioners
need to see the raid
if oldboy counts as action then it's by far the best one i've seen. really don't think it does mind you
comfortably the best action movies america has produced. well, the second one is anyway
such as crank (which is totally action as ballet)
BUT MY POINT STANDS
I'll actually have a top 10 before the day's out
The fight in Die Hard between Bruce Willis and that mega-beefy German bloke is probably art (ballet, if you will). The fact that it should be over after the first three punches but goes on for 5 minutes...*weeps*.
so, so, so much shit action in recent years, so much fucking loathsome empty gunplay, turned me completely off the genre
and I'm sure many an undergraduate dissertation has been written about Reagan, post-Vietnam America and action films.
One of those Bourne ones
Now shut up before Theo flips out again.
Action-comedy at best.
...is the master within this genre. I'd say Robocop is the best by some margin. Point Break is a fabulous movie too (Bigelow).
4. Die Hard
5. Starship Troopers
7. Terminator 2
8. Total Recall
9. The Dark Knight
Miami Vice is amazing.
1. The Bourne Supremacy
2. Die Hard
3. The Matrix
4. The Bourne Ultimatum
5. Enemy of the State
6. The Fugitive
7. True Lies
8. Minority Report
Shockingly similar storyline to The Raid. Amirite?
But doesn't take into account when the script was written, touted round studios etc. :/
that was also my reaction, but like Guntrip has pointed out, made at roughly the same time etc.
Thought The Raid was miles better though
and star wars
anyone who doesn't like that movie is nuts.
Here's my tuppence. No particular order.
Bullit (this counts, right?)
Escape From New York
Assault on Precinct 13
