Tell me what is your least favourite sport to watch and why
You know, because it's this or a cat-race thread about cardboard.
Mine: Rugby
Why: It's a fucking nonsense sport full of meathead twats with stupid rules and even the commentators don't seem to always work out what's going on. Vast amounts of time are spent with fat blokes bundling each other and it's got a stupid shaped ball.
YOU?

Sailing
I've nothing at all against sailing but watching it on telly I'm buggered if I can tell what's going on, where they're heading or who is winning.
^this so much.
Worst spectator sport ever.
I mean, dressage is boring because the 'sport' is boring, but sailing should be really exciting.
On the telly, yes. DULLL.
But with a pint on your hand, standing on the banks of the clyde* in the bracing wind watching them race furiously, twist around each other and trying not to crash into navigation buoys <3, it is really quite exciting.
*my favourtie is actually round the corner form the clyde, at tarbert for the scottish series.
Rugby?
Nah, not having that.
I know it's an unpopular view
But I just hate it. I always watch it thinking "it's like a shit football". Also, I know that's an unpopular view but hey.
It's like a million times better football :P
takin' names
youve not even stated which type of rugby
ya loser.
The main one - Union isn't it?
League is apparently a lot quicker with less bundling and less of the ref walking around a giant group of men on the floor, scratching his head before blowing a whistle for no particular reason 2 minutes in, to which even the commentators can't explain.
thats alright then
Rugby League is a fantastic spectator sport.
Snooker
Two blokes dressed as butlers play a shit version of pool with about a minute of competition and 5 minutes of one bloke tediously potting all the balls in sequence. Also squats malevolently on the TV schedule for weeks at a time and only attracts Through The Keyhole style applause from the crowd by way of atmosphere.
not this
Oh you're dead. Don't think you're not dead.
snooker is the best thing to watch when hungover
sausage sarnie and snooker on a sunday morning = heaven.
Didn't meant to ^this, fuck's sake
horse racing
they all look the same and it smells of despair and then sometimes they kill the horses afterwards.
It is pretty awful to watch
Unless...you have any money on it, in which case it is AMAZING.
horse dancing
CRICKET
^^^ironically, my favourite sport, you fucks keep off
Golf.
3/4 of it is spent watching people walk for miles.
See also Marathons and the Tour De France.
that's golf, man
:D
Fucking love watching golf.
GET IN THE HOLE!
I'm ONLY this-ing golf.
Running's alright. Cycling's great.
no it's not
that reminds me, the masters is in April isn't it.
sweet
Women's golf is entertaining
Because the commentators know no-one is watching so they waffle on about any old bollocks in the most sexist and patronising way imaginable.
shut up about the tour de france spenny.
The other 1/4 is spent trying to discern the little white ball
against white cloud or blue sky.
Golf, a good way to ruin a nice walk.
marathon running
really boring to watch
Good one
Who the fuck actually watchea the Great North Rim?
Same for 10,000m
The BBC show all five-zilion laps whilst not showing all the javelin and pole volting and hammer throwing going on at the same time, which is about 400 times more exciting than watching some skinny people run round in a circle.
incorrect.
the 10,000m is fascinating.
probably my favourite track race.
What, three laps in
that's fascinating?!
It's cuntflaps is what it is.
Hugely tactical.
More so than any race except maybe the 5000m
http://www.langleyflyingschool.com/Images/Aerodynamics%20and%20Theory%20of%20Flight/Flaps.gif
Great North Rim
Formula 1
The start is quite exciting, then it's just dull monotony.
^ truly awful
The noise is worse than a stadium full of vuvuzelas, it lasts for HOURS, none of the competitors have any personality and as a sport it's fucking boring.
The only redeeming feature is that you might get to hear the Italina national anthem if you can bear to sit through the whole thing.
I used to watch it when I was young, no idea why, but I gave up when it became all about pit lane strategy.
It's just a bunch of blokes with small cocks and loads of cash swanning round the world isn't it? Makes me fucking sick it does.
Still, Senna is a fucking brilliant movie.
I never used to be able to watch it but now i love it
I don't think *participants with no personality* is restricted to Formula One...
Listen to any sportsman being interviewed and you will soon realise they are in fact robots programmed with a few select phrases
More nutters slip through the net in other sports
I like F1 but I agree with the lack of personality
Why is that? I guess it's because these people need to be pretty robotic to do what they do.
They're a bit like astronauts
At first you're excited because they've *been in space* but as soon as they talk it's like zzzzzzz
Corporatisation (is that a word) of the sport...
Most teams are funded purely by blue-chip sponsors who expect a pretty clean-cut image in return for their millions. That, along with the need these days not to give anything away means that hardly anyone ever speaks their mind and those that have done (Villeneuve/Montoya) came across like spoilt pricks whenever they complained about anything.
Kimi Raikkonen is a good lad though
Likes his booze.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJ17wzNoBLE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjNns-OOmPQ
Always found this dull to watch, but more importantly
the winner seems to have little to do with the talent of the driver: they're all much-of-a-muchness (barring a handful over the years) and it's just down to the guy with the best car
A sport where specially designed cars drive at very high speeds should be amazing
But it's not. It's tedious in the extreme. How did terry manage that?
Pretty much anything
that involves judges and "artistic merit". So Diving, Gymnastics, Figure Skating, Synchronised Swimming, Dressage and probably a load of others I've forgotten.
i do like the gymnastics one where they run full pelt at that box and then do flips over it.
What about boxing
Boxing's ok...
in theory points are scored on clean blows rather than the artistic merit of them. It does suffer from clearly bent judging at times though.
Realy enjoyed rhythmic gymnastics at the Olympics
And the normal gymnastics. Once you get into what's going on it's pretty entertaining.
I went to a gymnastics final and quite enjoyed it to be honest
I'm actually ok with watching the competitors, it's the scoring that I hate - it makes me irrationally angry to see completely arbitrary points being awarded when there's no discernible difference between individuals.
Oh yeah, stay out of that side of things
Might as well flip a coin after each competitor's done their turn.
just any of the sports
bowls
no thanks
I genuinely don't mind watching bowls
Very soothing...
*bowels
darts is pretty crap
NO
I just can't be doing with it
I don't understand why they can't get treble 20 every time
standing at the same distance, throwing the same darts
at the same board, under no varying conditions. why can't they just do it every time?
like 10 pin bowling.
...
imagine that was your job though
like that was all you did, 8 hours a day.
just fling this same dart at this same board, all day.
you'd think they'd be better at it.
archery is similar.
remember the Korean girl not celebrating her gold medal because she didnt hit a 10 (or whatever) with her last arrow. thats sport.
but the game isn't just about hitting treble 20s
if archers had to calculate their finishes and hit specific points totals then they'd be more fun to watch
we've added in some mental arithmetic
that should really draw the crowds in
it's not a bad point actually.
To be fair I fucking LOVE LOVE LOVE the darts
but I have thought that myself.
same with penalties in football.
and archery (as above). and ten pin bowling. and...some other stuff.
see above
Footballers missing penalties is much less understandable
PRESSURE
though innit
pressure AND psychology
there is another guy standing 12 yards from you trying to guess which way you're going to strike the ball and attempt to get in the way
<Jeff Goldblum>
It's such a small target, so tiny variations in air pressure, fingertip sweat, adrenaline, concentration affect the destination of your dart. Then there's the problem of once you've landed your first dart then area you're aiming at is smaller and partially obstructed.
Not even a darts playing robot would be able to nail consistent 180s, although you could probably make it do a pretty cool walk-on.
*Imagines robot walk on to Chelsea Dagger*
:'D
darts is the definition of a spectator sport
gtfo
STAND UP
IF YOU LOVE THE DARTS
kinda want to defend all sports
they all have their own logic, and there are lots of people who enjoy watching that logic in action. no sport is inherently terrible except perhaps bloodsports like rugby
Cycling.
I have absolutely no interest in it.
there's probably not a sport that i wouldn't at least consider watching if it is on the tv.
i bloody love it.
in answer to the question, i dont think i can think of one.
snooker is pretty slow, but it's still nice to watch.
I'm the opposite
a lot of the time I just think "what's the point in this shit".
Anything that involves water
especially sailing & synchronised swimming
BORING
what about regular swimming?
that's pretty good
nah
it's just going in a straight line with no interplay between competitors
plus the acoustics of swim halls are one of the worst things the human race has ever had to cope with and cheering and whooping in them is like death to my ears
:D
don't like this sport (bad acoustics)
interestingly (or not)
I have several female friends who dislike football because they cannot stand the crowd noise
Association Football (soccer)
the world's greatest showcase of bad acting, bad haircuts and bad sportsmanship.
Surprised no one has mentioned it tbh.
some mong is bound to say cricket soon too
twat
please don't confuse theatrical entertainments with sports
you do wrestling a disservice
its also
not a sport
Wrestling:
Ballet + Greek theatre for boys.
It's no higher or lower a form of art than either of those two.
take it to the Tell Me What Is Your Least Favourite Sports Entertainment To Watch And Why
thread
Darts
likes japes said, it's a shit ten pin bowling
Golf - playing it I imagine is alright
Watching it for enjoyment you must have something wrong with you.
Cricket (yep I'm that mong)
Can go on for days, hardly any countries give a toss about it, counties have teams, watched by dilberts, has the most non barmiest barmy army ever, just a bit gash really. Oooh willow on leather oh get bent you slagroom.
tbf I'm now trying to work out the best pronunciation of 'slagroom'
I'm thinking sla-groom
^This to the OP
Basketball
Because it is really, really monotonous
Genuinely the only sport in the world I can think of that I definitely wouldn't want to watch, given the opportunity
not this^
wat
basketball is amazing
yep, i'm on board
no rhythm
WAT
that's beyond mental, I can't even comprehend it
because it's wrong, that's why
but it's like
so wrong, it's practically trolling...oh
yeah
the hyper inflated scores are shite and the superficial tension building of the "shot clock" (introduced because if you hold onto the ball possesion can and never will change).
the hyper inflated scores
what are you on about?
but in plenty sports ball possession rarely does change
and it really really dull
you say it's superficial tension building
but then acknowledge its actual purpose
the shot clock forces the teams to draw up good plays, instead of endlessly passing until something opens up. so yeah, it does make it more exciting. and it means the players actually have to think about what they're doing at any given moment.
there's way more strategy and forethought in basketball than a game of football (soccer). truthBOMB.
dude
read up there ^ soccer is my least favourite sport. out of them all.
Football.
Yeah, association football. 90 minutes of nothing happening. Constant attention required. No pay off. Literally, one in 30 games will be exciting at the top level. The lower levels you get the more entertaining it gets.
I don't think constant attention is required
I actually think its a lot better if you have a game on in the background cuz then you only really need to look when something is actually happening. This can be applied to basically all sports.
nah its like a magic eye
you watch nothing happen for long enough and the universe reveals itself. or something less wanky.
How good the sport is =/= how good it is to watch on TV.
Only in a few instances are the two concurrent. Dressage and Formula 1 are two that I can think of.
I was thinking about how weird a thing sport is...
Thousands of people will pay money to watch a bunch of blokes kick a ball about a bit of grass/hit a ball towards a rope with a plank of wood/throw a ball at a basket/drive a car.
All a bit daft really, isn't it?
and sailing!? a load of men in a big boat floating around on the sea!
and SHOUTING!? a load of men going around shouting! and so forth
life though innit
totally
I've had this thought several times whilst actually in stadia watching sports
but I've never had the thought while watching it on TV
not sure what my point is
it is surreal when taken out of context
30+ year old men wearing gloves and jumping to catch a ball that is kicked at them as a living is kind of odd
Yes, and I have had that existential thought of "what is everyone doing?!"
about so many sporting events. Even football, which is near universally appreciated.
Sometimes I get in the moment, but a lot, I'm just like "it's a game and everyone is wound up about NOTHING".
Sometimes I question my ability to enjoy most things in life because of that attitude.
Also art is so weird, people will pay a bunch of money to have some thing that a bloke has put some paint on
and music is so weird, people will pay a bunch of money to watch a bunch of people arbitrarily do a thing with an instrument
and films are so weird, people will pay a bunch of money to watch a bunch of people do a car chase or something
etc etc etc
Obviously it can be applied to just about everything that happens, and it wasn't a serious point I was making
But sport just seems weirder than the rest of those things.
100,000 people at the Nou Camp or MCG watching 22 blokes play with a bit of leather just sounds like an absolutely mental idea.
Yea, I get it, I was being a bit facetious sorry
It annoys me when sport is seen as less worthy than other pursuits though, everything in life is ultimately meaningless so why would any pursuit be worth more or less than anything else?
The Superbowl
YES WE CAN
I would have been on board with this
except this year's was really exciting. It can never be more than a 5 or 6/10 sport though, thanks to all the fucking stopping and starting.
you get used to it
It's generally really exciting. Seen far more genuinely exciting superbowls
over the last five years or so than final/showpiece events in any other sport.
Everything except football.
Cheers.
Football
Genuinely. Unbelievably boring.
I'm glad nobody has said ice hockey.
Ice hockey is great
I find it very dull
sorry
i think you know something's not okay with a sport when they have to pretend to fight for the pleasure of the crowd
What are your thoughts on wrestling?
well it's not a sport for a start so...
fucking love it
I've really been getting into my Rugby.
League and Union. Though obviously the latter's very boring at club level. Superleague's badass, though. Really loving it actually. The Friday night games so far have virtually all been mustard. Weirdly, not a huge fan of the international stuff League-wise.
The correct answer is probably American Football. Understand it, but it's tedious as fuck. Too many American cunts being far too American.
the French Top-14 is great to watch
so is Super Rugby (both "club" level, sort of)
Golf
golf is so shit
ITT: people that don't know what they're talking about dismissing things
They don't know what they enjoy or dislike?
they don't why
Who cares
It's not about why
how many people ITT have really watched a lot of the sport they hate and got to understand the rules and nuances?
none of them, because it doesn't interest them. that's fine. totally fine.
but it also excludes them from having a worthwhile opinion on that sport's quality. see: "tennis, just knocking the ball back and forth" and "american football starts and stops because americans have short attention spans" and "basketball is too repetitive" all commonly stated opinions that you only have if you don't understand what's happening in front of you.
tennis is pretty much that
and basketball is just running from one end to the other over and over
boxing is just hitting people too
you can make the same assumption as football or rugby with basketball
except sometimes they don't even do that!
nah mate you're talking shite
you can love playing a game, thus get to know the rules, nuances etc, but find it really boring just to sit and watch at home.
good point that
yeah
but that clearly isn't the case in this thread is it
be honest
But, if you had your way
This thread would be fucking dull
or maybe it's a bad thread in the first place???
Yeah, a little
But pointless debating is marginally better than nothing I guess
So do you listen to a back catalog of an artist or band you hate
so you can say you know what you hate?
I think it's pretty easy to know what you dislike. It doesn't take a study into it to find out.
no but it doesn't hurt to give things more of an effort
rather than denying themselves of something they may really like.
But everyone does this, so who cares.
not sure why this is confusing you
disliking things without fully understanding/being familiar with them is FINE
pretending your opinion about why they're bad has any value whatsoever - nah.
I least enjoy watching anything that isn't football
because I pretty much only ever watch those things on TV and some tiresome clod will always make an unflattering reference to football at some point
they're all so shit, i just can't choose.
can't believe the thread is this long and no-one's said tennis
tennis! Painfully boring action, just hitting a ball backwards and forwards, no action, no scenery. The players all seem dull and the Henman Hill type fans even worse.
that's because it's a silly and incorrect opinion ;)
Probably not the absolute worst
But its one of the worst, with the likes of golf.
As you say, painfully boring, no tactical edge to it or anything like that.
yes, golf!
golf is the second worst.
Really?
Tennis is the sport that I'd imagine would hold the most appeal to casual fans.
That Federer Nadal Wimbledon final years ago is one of the greatest sporting encounters I've ever seen.
I think it does amongst the general public...
Just look at the people who go to Wimbledon - They [the majority of them] clearly have no interest in sport whatsoever.
Wheelchair Tennis <3
ice hockey that isn't on ice
any winter olympics sports
curling?
its people with helmet hair cuts brushing the floor
skiing >>>>>>>>>> watching skiing
Watching the skeleton>>>>>>>>skeletoning
I love watching downhill and super G
Slalom/Giant S is a bit boring though.
Curling is brilliant
I spent whole days watching it in 2006
Football
I burnt out by about age 17 with football, I just can't get into it again after watching and playing it so much. When I tune in now its like nothing new ever happens that I didn't already see when I was a kid. Just diffrent names and teams playing it.
THE FOOTBALL WILL NEVER STOP
of the sports i understand
Golf.
I don't have an interest in most sports besides football and international rugby.
But i find golf so fucking dull to watch, alright to play sometimes if the weathers nice. See also Cricket.
You know what no-ones said yet? Blood sports.
Me? I don't get the Premiership footy. Bunch of miserable over paid fairies. Any league - any I say! - below it has much more enthusiasm, and the quality ain't THAT far off.
um you obviously didn't ctrl+f then
your argument about premiership football is tedious beyond belief, although there is something to be said for the increasing inevitability of the storyline
I don't think football is alone in the idiots who participate being overpaid
Tennisists and Golfists get paid ridiculous amounts to participate in two of the most boring things going
In all fairness you're right about the idiot count
Just seems that there are more high profile idiots in the footy.
Afraid I'm going to have to stick to me opinion that the premiership isn't the shining pinnacle of football that some think it is though.
All of them
All of the sports
Surprised this thread carried on past F1
It's just the worst. Everything about it.
Freestyle snowboarding.
Don't get me wrong, I like to snowboard, but watching some bloke or lass twirl around on their snowboards, on a half pipe, is really dull.
I like the long down hill jumps though.
^this, Horsing and Rugging.
rugby union out of the main ones
don't really have an opinion on league but i've been to watch the bulls and it was fun
f1's the worst on paper but i kind of grew up watching it
think anyone can enjoy any sport if they're well enough acquainted with the characters
If I'm right, nobody has said baseball yet?
Which surprises me because when I was in America they all said to avoid going because it was so dull. In its defence, I bet it's really fun to play (or softball at least) but I think those who do go to watch actually just go to eat. There's that Simpsons bit when Homer goes to a game sober..."I never realised just how boring this game is".
baseball's arguably the biggest sport in America
so I don't know where that came from.
Also it's a fantastic sport.
I'm always surpried how many people on here like sport/watching sport.
You besmirch the name of all true bedwetters everywhere
All of them.
Anything that's not snooker or football (soccer or American).
but the ones that spring to mind as being completely rubbish, at least to watch, are bowls, golf, darts and F1.
Oh I forgot tennis.
and bowls is probably slightly less rubbish. So bowls>tennis, golf, darts, F1.
golf
because.... its golf
man
everyone sayind darts

i mean the song alone
but
