This isn't like a petition to the government to change the law which can be a pretty pointless affair. Its a PR issue. If enough people seem outraged, EDF will drop the lawsuit. If you look at McLibel, it's not hard for petitions to make a difference in things like this.
I can't see much discussion of the petition itself but I'll take your word for it and come back a little bit later and see how the discussion is progressing
There's absolutely no question it's an awfully, awfully, awfully phrased petition that really doesn't engender sympathy for the people involved. I've signed it but really don't like myself for signing it.
But, once you read the link to the case, it actually pretty disturbing.
