Potentially one of those threads: (large) woman photographs herself receiving strange looks in public
A few of the people in the pictures are clearly pulling 'wtf are you doing posing for a solo photograph in a really busy public space ffs' faces. A few of the others though ... Not so nice. Feel slightly guilty on seeing the pics because I'm not even gonna pretend I've never made those sort of faces.

theres absolutely nothing here of any note.
its just people looking, no one is really reeling in disgust or anything. The people laughing are walking with people and could be laughing at anything. The black woman seems to be glancing at the ridiculously large map. The people on the swing are like "wtf us thus woman doing sitting on a swing taking a photo'. The other people are probably like 'get the fuck out of my way'. Pretty sure if you remove the woman and just took photos of people walking in busy areas you'd see just as many similar expressions.
i like this one

that woman is LOOKING TO CROSS THE ROAD!
rubbish idea - rubbish photos
I'm not saying that it doesn't happen,
But there's not really any way you can use those photographs as evidence that it does, or that it happens more to someone of a larger size.
The only one of those that I'd be fairly sure of pinning down as showing
a reaction to her based primarily on her appearance is the second to last one, with the girl in pyjama bottoms where she's taking a photo.
The rest are ambiguous. Stand almost any person in the middle of a busy area and you'd soon manage to collect photos of people looking and pulling a face of sorts.
That's not to say that what is being described doesn't exist.
Just that these photos aren't really evidence of what's being claimed.
I was on a wander through a park yesterday. There was a gothy-ish couple (him: trenchcoat, her: postbox red hair) having their photo took under a stone arch (photoshoot style, not just a snap). You'd probably have managed to get a picture of me pulling some sort of face. Fair play to 'em though - I'm sure the photos came out looking pretty good. And that they'll be a valid addition to deviantart.
What I want to know is this: does it make it better our worse if the photography is artisanal?
not even convinced by second to lasty
The last one is just a child who happens to be looking in the direction of the camera
Also if these are self-shot photographs (as it implies)
I'd definitely be looking at a camera on a tripod at that height, in the fucking sea. It's be more interesting to capture people trying to look away from the camera.
agree this is largely innocuous, and also..
..setting up a tripod in any busy area is going to induce looks from people, no matter what or who the subject is and what they are doing.
I dont understand
How is she taking pictures of herself? If its on a timer then I can see why people are thinking shes a bit of a fruitloop
On a tripod on a timer.
I would definitely stare at anyone doing that in some of the busiest streets in the world.
Should be titled
Mental case does mental thing: People look at her
the people in the background should be ashamed of themselves
and guess what I'm calling them out. You hear that people in the background making faces at the woman, I'm calling you out.
do i hefter look at these?
maybe they are just looking at her abysmal attire
haha
that was a quote from the comments ^
i'm not laughing at my own joke.
In This Thread:
Balls ... Too early
the chap in the cross country jumper has such sad eyes
get your fucking map out of my way
a lot of water retention
so she's set up in the middle of busy streets
and started posing for photos right where people are trying to walk?
Heck I give people hacky looks for stopping to answer their phones in the street if it means they've become an obstacle to be getting to where I was headed.
yeah, I'd be looking at her as well
looking at the twat that suddenly decides to stop in front of me in the middle of the street
...
C'mon ffs, I'm bored
pssst start a thread about rape suspects not being named or something
I refuse to sink that low.
I have standards, jacques ... I could have pointed out that, at the time of writing, every respondent in this thread is male. I could have speculated that none of the respondents were obese. I could have used the 'p' word with reckless abandon. But I didn't. Standards, my good man.
Just bump the Pistorius thread
Lot of mileage left in that one I'm sure.
What's the 'p' word?
Potato chips?
i think everyone looks at everyone else whilst they're walking around
i always catch myself looking people up and down in the street, sometimes negatively judging them, which is horrible and i wish i didn't do.
but some of those pictures (the times square one, the girl laughing, and this one: http://haleymorriscafiero.com/images/photos/wait-watchers/cop.jpg) are plainly mocking her/laughing at her. who knows whether it's to do with her being fat or not, but i don't see other people in the background to these photos receiving similar looks.
also i wonder if there isn't an element of 'why is SHE taking a picture of herself' in public places, as if she's too fat/ugly/not got nice enough clothes/isnt acting 'normal' to be photographed.
I don't think that one with the cops has anything to do with her appearance
just looks like they're having a bit of shabs n bants, not mocking her at all
but they're policemen
who are clearly on duty?
it's meant to be light hearted, no?
like photo bombing her. that's what it looks like to me anyway
great bunch o' lads
but the people in the background of the photos aren't standing in a public place posing in front of a tripod-mounted camera?
besides, i think its presumptious to judge someones reactions in a photo. in a lot of those photos (if not all) their 'reactions' could be incedental to the subject of the photos.
she's not posing
i don't know if it says in that article but i read somewhere else that the camera is on time-lapse (or whatever) and she's just milling about doing normal stuff like speaking on the phone, tying shoelaces
the obese deserve to be vilified
it's the price they pay in pre-emptive compensation for the care they will require off the state in later life.
This manages to be neither funny, true nor shocking ...
just ugly.
You're an idiot.
then maybe
people are being all 'why is that person just milling around getting in the way, go stand at the side if you're taking a call people are walking here'
rather than 'why is THAT person milling around being all fat and disgusting and getting in the way, go and stand in the gutter and let us norms use the pavement that was designed for us'
maybe some people are, but i highly doubt that many of them even registered she was really there as anything other than an obstacle, the same as if there was a kid screaming or a really slow old person or someone who kept stopping to faff around with their bags or any other thing that you see a hundred times a day in any busy pedestrian area
well, as i said, you can't be sure WHY people are giving her weird looks
in the context of the series of photographs though, it is pretty uncomfortable viewing.
How is it uncomfortable viewing if you can't be sure why people are giving her weird looks?
If she'd had the sense to film herself rather than take photos this could have been a lot more effective. Dozy bint, tsk honestly, etc etc.
but the context is manufactured
the story in the opening post frames the pictures in a manner that leads the viewers eye to look for certain things in the picture which otherwise may not be seen or may not be there at all
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvvLL_oAvus&feature=player_detailpage#t=207s
she's not posing
except for when she is
http://www.petapixel.com/assets/uploads/2013/02/waitwatchers-1.jpeg
The Times Square on is pretty dubious too though.
The guy is posing for a photo for his girlfriend, and it looks like there is a woman sat there, looking really grumpy, having set up a tripod to take a photograph of herself in the middle of one of the most obvious photo opportunities in the city.
If she'd been there for a while, I'd think she was pretty rude.
I judge and look down on everyone while out and about
fat, fit, short or tall, there is an equal sneer of contempt for all. After all, it is like the Bible says 'Judge not less, you're being judged'
I guarantee that if she were a thinner person
people would look at her doing the exact same thing. Taking a selfie in the middle of a busy area is going to get people looking, no matter your size. She's definitely Samantha Brick'ing this way out of proportion.
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/social/4425526#r7338231
The camera is about 5 ft away and she is directly in front of it.
She is posing. Who does their shoe laces up like this? http://www.petapixel.com/assets/uploads/2013/02/waitwatchers-8.jpeg
People tend to look at the subject or the camera in such situations. Have you never seen a live news broadcast?
Here's my own series called some people looking at other people and 'judging' them.

she's stood still on a busy zebra crossing! I'd probably have told her to stop doing what she was doing.
She would then accuse me of hating fat people.
you do hate fat people though
like you hate asian people
This is just photos of people with blank expressions
walking past.
It proves or means nothing.
What a load of old cock.
was awaiting your contribution.
Er, high five?

What this mainly suggests to me...
...is that she's probably more uncomfortable with the way she looks than anyone who's supposedly gawping at her in these photos.
In this country, especially, we have abhorrent social prejudices against people who are perceived to be overweight. Not sure what this series of photos is aiming to achieve though.
think the point is to illustrate what
it's like to be a figure of fun.
your second para seems to contradict your first. think you're on to something all the same, the same way that if a person lacks confidence or is insecure they'll automatically think the worst when somebody is perceived to have snubbed them. probably a bit of both going on here
Yeah my point's mainly about her methodology.
If this is to illustrate the figure of fun thing - it's a pretty ineffective way of doing it.
Still - it's got us all talking, ain't it?
Still - it's got us all talking, ain't it?
I don't like people saying that like it's an accomplishment
Well, it all depends on what it is, doesn't it?
In this case, I think it's an outcome worth noting, but it's certainly not an accomplishment in and of itself in every instance.
but we're just talking about how shit the photos are
I think most people don't even take in their surroundings on a conscious level when walking along the street.
If any of these people are pulling snide faces, it's likely due to the fact that there's an obstacle in their way that has caused them to lose focus on the trivial matters occupying their minds whilst walking.
This woman isn't obscenely overweight. I can imagine that she might be made to feel terrible about her size by others, but she looks like hundreds of other women in the world. Her weight is common enough that it probably doesn't even register with other people.
