Tips
So, I've started working in a restaurant part time. Customers pay a 10% service charge, so we get our tips with our pay at the end of the week. BUT, today I found out that the manager takes 60% of all the tips made for himself.
Is this...normal?

I'm certain that's abnormal
in decent society. As far as I can tell, you're boss is a scoundrel.
You are boss
no, that definitely isn't normal
and very fucking out of order.
Do the company that own Ask, Cafe Rouge etc still take tips given to their staff and use them to pay for their hourly wage? RAGE
just be 60% less courteous to customers.
I found it annoying that if we ever got tips we would have to put them all in a jar and they all got shared out equally between the staff
depending on what hours you did, but I swear I deffo put more money into that jar than I got out. You should be able to pocket your own tips.
yeah, that's bullshit
i know in casinos they are pooled
and split between dealers, bar staff, waiters etc. if i tip a dealer it's because he was an ace dealer and i want him to have the money/ it sucks.
in my old job you were meant to give tips to charity
always pocketed them without telling anyone
looks like if they're given in cash
it's yours to do as you wish, bit more difficult if it's paid on a credit card or cheque though -

Ugh, 10% added service charge is such a scam.
Just means all the money gets 'centralised' and redistributed from there so 'head' office can take a nice fat wedge of it. Completely defeats to point of tipping 'service'.
Boycott any restaurant that does this, or ask for your waiter to remove the 10% from your bill and leave a cash tip instead. They'll love you for it (unless they're a real dunce with the till)
'Head' Office?
Fellatio Workplace
places adding the service charge automatically really annoy me
going to start doing this
the remove form the bill and give it them in cash.
this all feels borderline illegal to me - like I expect most people believe that when they tip that it goes to the people serving them. That's the whole custom of tipping isn't it? I don't mind some going to the chef or whoever, but THE MAN? I don't want to tip THE MAN. It feels incredibly misleading to call them TIPS if it's just going to teh fatcats
It's a pretty shady and underhanded business model,
which they'll justify by saying it's a farer way of all restaurant staff to get a share of the tips. Sounds reasonable, but it's total bullshit.
I was told by the manager of a restaurant I worked at when I was younger that waiters got 40% of this 'share', chefs 20%, kitchen porters 10% and the company kept 30%.
it's weird that that line is so common
'farer way of all restaurant staff to get a share of the tips'
tips aren't even, the best people get the best tips. but so many companies trot that line out
yeha whats the point of giving good service if you have to hand over 60% to the slackers
this is BULLSHIT
this is complete fucking bullshit
burn the place to the ground
