DiS 11-a-side football // Sunday 24 February // 4 PM
Whittington Park Football Pitch
Holloway Road

www.aquaterra.org/whittington-park-football-pitch
Hopefully everyone (and in particular Will) has calmed down after that extremely exciting 5-a-side tournament we had last weekend. Depending on how many invitations we get for other 5-a-side events, we may have another edition in this format later this year. Or we'll just have a one-off game on a sunny Sunday afternoon at the Old Street pitches.
Back to normal business however, our third proper 11-a-side game has been penciled in for next Sunday. Hopefully the quality will be as good as the first two, where each match was a true cracker, to close to call the winner until the very last kick of the game.
Some other administrative guff: a friendly against Mama FC has been confirmed for March, don't forget to reply to the email about the Amsterdam trip and finally, Welsh Rich is organising the traditional annual curry night later this month. More details to follow soon.
The usual blurb:
- we play on a full-sized astro-turf pitch
- there are spanking new, comfy changing and toilet facilities
- 5 min walk from Archway tube station (Northern line)
- 1 min walk from Upper Holloway train station (Barking - Gospel Oak line)
- Buses 17, 43 and 271 all stop at Upper Holloway train station
- arrive at 3:30 PM for warm-up, tactics discussion, pre-match fags, team pictures, etc.
- kick-off at 4 PM sharp
- full 2 x 45 minutes and injury time + 15 min break
- one team will play in red shirts, the other in blue
- everyone can participate, the skills on display are wide-ranging
- final teams will be announced in the week leading up to the game
- 5 pounds each will be collected on the day
- post-match analysis in the Landseer pub on Landseer Road (5 mins walk away)
Come on, you know you want to. Put your name down by replying below.

Louis G.K is what i'm calling him from now on.
oh hi bamos.
I think he's too polite to say so,
but I'm not sure Jack is any more willing to get stuck at centre-back forever than I was. I played in midfield for all of last month's match, so maybe we should swap?
Don't give the tactics away
Not even the bit about fishplums playing as a False Nine?
just noticed that our captain is a sub
that can't be right can it?
You miss a game
You get relegated to the bench
and presumably you lose the armband
He's on his final warning
^ some first-rate Hoogy mind-games there
ssshhhhh, you're embarrassing me!
Well we have Rich as well (at least for as much of the game as that taxi driver/physio advises he should play) so maybe we can rotate a bit...
If you guys don't stop colluding I'm going to have to sell one or all of you to Man City
Sorry Arsene
I'm liking the look of these line-ups
should be a good'un*

Gentle reminder
We have a full house on Sunday, so if you no longer can make it, can you let me know as soon as possible?
There are people waiting in the wings to take your place.
Hi Arthur
It's looking like I'll struggle to make kick off so I think I best bail out of this one. Sorry...
Sure there's another marauding left back waiting in the wings. Santos perhaps from just up the road?
Santos has left for Brazil
It will be difficult but I'll find someone to fill the gap.
Today!
oh yeah
awesome
Oh
Good.
cold day to be a sub
might pick up an arsene wenger bubblegown™ from sports direct
Guess who's playing now?
I'll give you a clue: it's me.
Don't worry - it could have been worse. If there were no dropouts I was going to suggest to Arthur that I could be the ref.
I have the tail-end of a cold
so if I have a howler today it's definitely not my fault
Well, that was annoying.
Totally dominant in possession, we came up against another MotM performance from oenso, and a lack of final ball/touch, and were then undone by a couple of really soft route-one goals.
Hmph.
Great win for the battling Reds
Like Marckee said I think the Blues were dominant in possession with Chris and Dan in the middle playing some lovely football with great movement. The Reds soaked up the pressure well, Oenso was fantastic in goal, the defence were brilliant (especially Rich & Rich), the midfield and wide players done their jobs and Hedges finished sublimely. I'd be gutted if I was on the Blues team but I wasn't so hurrah.
We looked at the slow-motion replay in the pub last night
and concluded that Rich's (olegrich) shove on JohnM in the first half should have been a penalty.
a definite pen.
not sure why there wasn't a bigger outcry at the time...oh yeah, orsmby wasn't on the pitch at that point.
Looked like a shoulder to shoulder to me
but cliche alert we've all seen them given.
I have to say I enjoyed olegrich nutmegging someone, flicking it over someone's head and also making a 50 yard run to tap the ball into the goal only for it to be offside. All done whilst wearing mittens.
He megged me :(
and then apologised after, which only made it worse
Oh dear
I wasn't taking the piss - I hate getting megged and felt bad doing it to someone else.
Ha, no worries, I'll be out for revenge though!
This is what I'm worried about.
fishplums mittens were the best
You can't get any more twee than that.
I dunno
Mine matched my shirt....
Very debatable offside that
and I was fucking knackered after making that run.
You weren't offside, it was Owen who was, by a good few yards.
our offside trap was good yesterday.
the organisation all round was good actually.
Ah!
All makes sense now.
Shove is very harsh
Was shoulder to shoulder. Leant in at worst.
Reds 5 - Blues 3
Reds: Hedges (x2), Jim, Jake, Owen
Blues: James, Rich (og), JohnM
(happy to be corrected on the Reds goalscorers)
Lee bagged for the Reds in the first half with a nice low
curled effort
Now I remember
Opener for the Reds, with Mark still in goal
** CORRECTION **
Reds: Hedges (x2), Jim, Lee, Owen
actually really enjoyed that game, even tho we lost.
basically because everybody managed to pass the ball.
MOTM - everyone.
plus, i did a really big kick (volleying a goal kick into the stands)
Our long-range attempts on goal were all rubbish
With exception of Joe's shot against the bar in the first half.
oh wow, forgot that. would have been goal of the century.
bit gutted
that I forgot to do a dismissive 'all day' shout after that effort.
Don't worry
I got one in.
Great game
Probably the best one I've played in. Two good teams playing good football and in good spirits.
Thought we were unlucky to go 3-1 down, but deserved it in the end. Very good team display all round, great shape and everyone worked back well.
Can't give a MOTM as I thought everyone was great, but moment of the match was Jack's miraculous header off the line, which was Ashley Cole-esque. Great finishing as well, Jim's lob was delightful.
Re: John M's penalty claims above - I was shielding the ball back to oenso and did step across when he came in, but I felt it was still shoulder to shoulder and certainly not a shove. Would have cried blue murder at the other end obviously.
Oh yeah, Jack's clearance was incredible
Decent game, although very frustrating result for us Blues
Thought we had the better of the midfield, but couldn't get it out of the centre enough to find Jake and Ken on the wings. Ken is in a rich vein of form, and Jake was dangerous when we got the ball to him.
Our defending was a bit soft in the second half, Hedges was the difference for them really - if he shows up for the next couple of months he'll have Golden Boot wrapped up before June.
As noted above, lots of good passing and was an enjoyable match to play in, just annoying to lose goals to the few long balls that were played.
Big shout out to Ken
gets better each game.
Oh also, I thought El did well for us when he went up front
Made himself a right nuisance
Also I rather immaturely had a lot of time for Louis and Joe
and their communication breakdowns.
Made all the better
by Louis' headwear whilst he was screaming.
I swear the 2nd time was Joe trolling him.
Yes
didn't exactly cover ourselves in glory or indeed dignity there.
That was generally a very good quality game – especially considering the freezing conditions. Thought in many ways it was the mirror image of our last match where I felt my side had dominated possession and created most chances but lost to breakaway goals and clinical finishing. Good to be on the winning side this time round anyway – guess that’s the difference with a full-time captain like Will running the show rather than a part-timer filling in.
Some very good performances on both sides. Was one of those rare games where most people seemed to be playing to their potential. Dan S and Chris were excellent in the centre – the latter seemed to be permanently at my ankles whenever I had the ball in the middle – Ormsby played well (including three lovely assists) and Joe was extremely unlucky with his 30-yarder.
For us, John F had an excellent game all over the park, Hedges was deadly again, James was excellent in goal, we had untold Riches at the back and Jack defied physics with a truly absurd goal-line clearance.
Apologies to Rob for shouting at him. It was a deliberate third-party McEnroe-ing on my part which I think paid dividends, but was still pretty rude. He had an excellent second-half including a slaloming 50-yard run which was almost a brilliant goal.
Shame Bamos didn’t turn up.
^ this to the last sentence.
Props to Hoogy and Will
There's been some evenly-matched teams and really good games so far this year.
Enjoyed that, knacked now.
Think if the Blues had got a fourth at 3-1 then we'd have fallen apart, the fact it was always in sight meant we stayed organised and didn't get too silly. Our second goal came at just the right time.
With regard to the midfield battle, my 4-4-2 vs Hoogy's 4-5-1 often runs out a bit like yesterday: the extra man in midfield means one team can attack and find a lot of space through the middle, but the opposition back four only have one striker to deal with so can keep their shape and defend well - makes it very hard to play the final ball/shoot from distance unless you get it exactly right. If the Blues had used their wingers more to stretch play then it could have been different, don't know though. Maybe something to consider tactically for international friendlies.
Anyway, well played to everyone, was a real battle right up til the end. Little bit gutted that when we did play some lovely football we were either offside or gimped up the finish, but I'll take the win, cheers.
we were playing 4-4-2.
I knew someone would say that
Ormsby was playing very deep though, effectively a 4-5-1. Now shut up.
he was playing in central midfield.
Who was playing up front with Tunde? THE INVISIBLE MAN?
There was definitely you, Ormsby and Chris in the middle, with Jake and Ken on the wings, unless you're calling me a liar, eh? eh?
John M.
Chris was on the right. sometimes.
look, it was 4-4-2 alright?
I'm not listening
*joins Red team on open top bus parade round Archway roundabout*
Yep, easy to say from midfield but in the last couple of games
my side's strikers have dropped too deep instead of stretching the defence with pace à la Hedges.
Tunde breaking his glasses early on
and being aware even less than usual what's happening around him didn't help either.
I think the tactical masterstroke was playing me up front
for the 2nd half, granted I didn't really do anything but still.
can't say i particularly enjoyed the second half on the right against Jake and Jack. I'm going to need a month long training montage before the next match.
(begrudging) well done reds.
Aside from my scrappy goal
And some alright passes I had a shocker. Only really started to come in to the game in the final 20 minutes :(
slight elaboration now I'm on my laptop instead of phone - Hedges was an absolute joy to play with, and James was incredible in goal, had a great game. El and Joe were well organised at the back and did a great job together. Jack was also a hero at the back for us and his clearance was absolutely majestic.
i think i've pulled my hamstring (again).
havent had cramp for about 5 games tho.
fao everyone
curry night this wednesday: http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/social/4425986
I'd love to come
but can't really get up from work, or arrange to work from London that day unfortunately. :(
Frustrated with the goals conceded
Reckon I hesitated for a split second too long on both the through balls, possibly because two people were clean through each time, but if I'd committed I'd have got to each of them I think. The OG was just one of those things, but such a shame it came after Brave Jack Brave's heroics on the line!
Really good game, was hard as pretty much all their attacking players were capable of shots from outside the box as well as accurate through balls. Thought the midfield battle was really evenly matched, both sides had good passing spells and pressure.
I meant for that corner to hit a defender and go in.
good game
got everything really:
joe's shot against the bar
jack's goalline clearance
oenso's double (or was it triple) save
dan's through ball for red's second goal.
would be good to see oenso and hedges on different teams next game #immovableobject #irresistibleforce
FUCKING HELL JOE
