Cars
In the market for a new car. Got my eyes set on a nearly-new Golf. Need it to be family-proof for the near future and so spacious, safe, easy for the missus to drive and park etc.
I've always liked the Golf but it is a bit common and quite pricey relative to other cars (like a Leon is a few G cheaper, and an Audi is pretty much the same price). Anyone else got any ideas on small family cars which will last 10 years no bother and preferably a decent diesel with a bit of poke.
Also used car dealers are bloody terrifying.

We looked at Golfs but insurance was crazy
Opted for a Skoda Fabia instead. When VAG bought them out, they unified lots of parts and so they're more or less Golfs under the hood, just without a few extras. Or so I read on a forum (I know nothing about cars).
Only issue we've had has been a leaking door seal in the back (which is common on most cars made around then by VAG (tee hee) apparently.).
So you're after a family hatch...
Can't go wrong with a Golf...okay. Presumably you're referring to the Audi A3, same platform being VAG group and all that, but more expensive. There are those who would say the same with regards to the Seat Leon (only with the price slightly lower), but in my experience the driving experience isn't the same.
Life's too short for Vauxhalls so we'll disregard the Astra, noboy in their right kind buys French so that leaves you with the Ford Focus (decent, will do the job) or (IMHO) the only real rival contender, the Honda Civic...great cars with cavernous boots which may be a significant factor for you in the future.
So, Civic or Golf.
Yeah I've sat in a Leon a few times and thought that I couldn't really see out well
We only have street parking and so good visibility are pretty important. Also living on the edge of the pennines with lots of hilly driving and trips to scotland and essex visiting family mean I want a fun car which is comfortable when doing long trips. I'll check out the Focus, my family have an aversion to Fords but I'll check one out. Civic to me has the same issue as the Leon in that I can't see out of the back! I'm loathed to test drive a car and then just walk away, feels a bit tight, but salesmen are so pushy and it's all just a bit embarrassing #bedwetter
To be fair
I've had my X reg 206 since new and its been amazingly reliable. Though I'm getting a Leon next.
I'll need to get a car within the next six months I reckon
Haven't driven a car since before uni over four years ago. Gonna shit myself.
It's just like riding a bike
except with four wheels and a bit more dangerous. It'll come back quite quickly I'm sure.
My house mate
Got a 12 plate Golf two weeks ago. Its a lovely car and I'm quite jealous. I'm planning on getting a newish car next year and I've already decided on a Leon. Practically the same car really just a different body and badge.
on the autotrader forums
someone has just posted a thread concerning the optimum number of reds and greens in a packet of wine gums
Yet further proof that this forum is being rapidly left in the dust.
I've driven a Golf and a Civic
Though they were both the previous model to the current ones. Both were nice but I prefered the Civic. If anyone is looking to buy a low mileage 54 plate BMW 3 series for around £3800 I'm thinking about selling up.
i'll second the focus
i was the same as you - anti ford, but it's a great little car
great handling
good reliability
pretty good economy
don't dismiss something becuase it's common though - means lots of spares/ knowledge for problems
easy for the missus to drive and park
hahahahahahahahah
really? fuck me
you know his missus?
Fiats have those 'City' buttons on them
So women can park them and that.
Probably fall apart though.
If you're after a Golf, get a Skoda Fabia or Seat Ibiza. Basically the same cars and a bit cheaper, the Ibiza is very reliable too apparently.
good shout on the fabia
