On Sunday night I came home late to a letter marked "From Flat 8: Please Open". So I did. Flat 8 was telling me that they have been frequently disturbed by our loud sex noise late at night, the most recent being 3:30 AM on that Sunday morning. We were urged to consider our neighbours when 'making' (struck through) 'having our sex'.
Thing is, on Saturday night we fell asleep at 1 while quietly watching Columbo, and generally speaking go about our business pretty quietly and at reasonable hours (we both have jobs, y'know). Whereas Flat 8, whoever that is, seem to have no compunction about playing terrible New Jack Swing until after midnight on a Thursday.
Clearly something has riled them. Do I intervene now in person and cut off any potential awkwardness? Write them a reply and risk the situation becoming some dreadful game of note leaving and sublimated bitterness? If I go and talk to them, it means I'll have to have an actual out-loud conversation about my sex life with a total stranger who is also the kind of uptight tit who writes letters to their neighbours about sex in weirdly personal language. If I write a note I'm one of those same uptight tits. If I ignore it, whoever they are hearing will continue to go at it like an early 90s erotic thriller possibly starring Shannon Tweed with reckless abandon and we'll continue to get the blame. OR do we just start having louder sex so at least they'll actually have something to complain about?
