forzaborza's transfer deadline day football thread...
as you know, i'm a bit too busy for vulgarball nowadays, but i do love the last day of tranny winders. thought someone might've done a 6am needy thread today, tbh.
Predictions?
Wanyama to United?
Fellaini or Isco to City?
Rivaldo to not sign for Spurs?
16-year-old Ligue 2 full-back to Arsenal?
Stoke to snap up shitloads of dead wood again?
Pardoui to complete his French fantasy XI?
Villa to even try to survive?
'Arry to appear on SSN hanging out of his car window, saying their busines is done whilst splodging abother £25m on absolute shite?
Shoot...

biggest story of the transfer window has already happened
Matt Ritchie to Bournemouth for 400k. A steal. Expect a Swindon fire sale today and pictures of a shattered Di Canio leaving in a huff.
That's good value
Many Swindon fans (all of them?) took to Twitter to register their disgust at the seemingly low transfer fee. Apparently, and offer wof £600K was tabled recently but rejected.
since when were bournemouth
flush with cash?
Ricky Otto
Out of retirement - to add some flair and experience to Aston Villas youthful/naive squad.
You heard it hear first.
Birmingham legend ain't he?
Can't imagine him going to Villa if so.
Haha they can't even sign Ricky Otto. True confirmation that Wagons are FUCKED.
Fair point
I always think of him as a Southend legend though.
A true legend of Journeyman FC.
According to THE SUN, Celtic are lining up a move for Kevin Doyle
if Hooper ends up at Norwich.
I don't think Wanyama will move until the summer.
I just hope Celtic get good money for him.
Sadly, if someone like United come calling they'll get him on their own terms, i imagine. i.e well under £10m.
That's United! Famous for underpaying for players they're after.
Norwich's bid yesterday was allegedly 'well short'
Lennon saying there's no price attached to Gary is nonsense though. everyone has a price. I'd have though north of 8m, they'd be hard pressed to say no. I'd like to have that cash, but on the whole i'd rather have Hooper. I'll be hitting refresh constantly today on my news feed :/
Yeah, I'd expect us to sell around £7.5/8m
Any less than that and we'd be as well keeping him, because we should (barring any catastrophe between now and then) be able to get a similar amount in the summer.
I thought our 2nd bid was supposed to be around that mark though?
It would be amazing if we got him but if we can get Becchio for less AND get rid of Steve Morison, that is a complete steal
I heard that neither of your first 2 bids had even arrived at £6m.
Don't know about the 3rd that we apparently rejected a day or two ago.
My Scunthorpe supporting gf is getting impatient
Got something like 20% sell-on fee.
It's great to have Redknapp back for the January window.
It really, really is. If he can top the swoop for Chris Samba yesterday then my hat will be well and truly off.
BBC says...
Everton in for Negredo
Urby Emanuelson to Fulham
PSG have bid accepted for Daniele De Rossi.
Shaktar reject £30m bid for Willian from Anzhi!!!
I genuinely think if Bobby has to sell Balo and watch De Rossi go to PSG in the same
week he'll have a full on mental collpase.
Nah.
I think he knows that City aren't going to be splodging huge money on ageing players now. Txiki and Feran will be looking for value deals for top young continental players, i'd imagine, which was sort of the plan last year for Marwood, he just wasn't the right man for the job.
Wouldn't surprise me if the press put massive negative spin on the Balotelli going story, though (after spending months saying he should be sold). I get the impression Mancini genuinely just wanted what was best for the lad and so was happy for him to move to Milan in the end.
Obviously, feel free to bump this when City sign De Rossi for about £35m later...
I'll be curious to see who Txiki bring in and ship out in the summer.
Think selling Mario smacks a bit of either he goes or you both do after the training ground bust up. I actually think it's probably a good thing to have people above Mancini managing him.
Sounds like you're reading the tabloids/internet a bit too much.
I might be wrong, but i expect that City will, with Mancini's permission, seek to move on high-earning, older players such as Lescott, Kolo Toure & Tevez, and replace them with fitter, cheaper, top young continental players, such as Alderwiereld, Benat & Isco, who'll obviously have higher resale values later on.
Genuinely don't think there's any friction between Mancini and Txiki whatsoever. In fact, i think Mancini was very happy to see him come in to replace Marwood, and seems very content at the minute. I wouldn't go believing the predictable tabloid title tattle, or certainly not making it up.
Mancini's whole reign has said to have involved countless behind-the-scenes battles, most of which have been completely fabricated, the rest of which he's effortlessly hurdled. I think you just fall into the 1% of City fans who don't like their current manager, eh, as i think we estabished after you quickly poo-pooed his input into your club's first title in decades last year.
What the fuck are you even talking about?
Just answered your question, champ.
You mentioned who Man City may or may not sign. You then hinted at a bit of heat between Txiki & Mancini. You ended with a bit of a dig at your title-winning manager. Each paragraph adddressed each of those points, boss.
You seem to be having an arguement with someone else.
1) Not sure how referencing moving on older players he has never really got on with is relevant to selling someone he describes as one of his children. Esepcially when he's 22.
2) Mancini has constantly said he wants Ferguson levels of control so there may not be friction there but he's definitely being managed.
3) I'm a big fan of Mancini and think he's probably the only man for the job currently but to suggest he's perfect is pretty stupid.
:D
Boss...
i know you're a bright lad, but let me break it down for you...
1) "I'll be curious to see who Txiki brings in and ship out in the summer'. Replied to with a paragraph on who Man City might bring in in the summer.
2) "Selling Mario smacks a bit of either he goes or you both do'. Replied to with a paragraph about how that's nonsense and it doesn't sound like there's much friction there at all.
3) "Probably a good thing to have people above Mancini managing him'. Replied to with a paragraph about how you should have a bit more faith in your cup winning, title winning manager.
I'll conceed you 1 and half of 2 but definitely not 3.
Deal!
(Think i'm just a bit hungry, tbh, mate).
is will.i.an. any good?
he's been a deadline day £25m staple ingredient for about 4 years
Bentley and Jenas to QPR...
:D
I was pissing myself laughing on the train readiing that Guardian rumour
Amazing.
QPR might have a different first eleven by Saturday.
I wonder what Sol Campbell is up to...?
becchio to norwich
seems inevitable :(
Morison & £2.5m, apparently.
That's a pretty good deal for Leeds, no?
I mean, I know he's scored lots of goals this year, but Becchio's nearly 30 and quite shit isn't he?
Steve Morison is so so pish :D
no
alright he scored some goals for Millwall two years ago
well done
Wigans:
Paul Scharner? Charles N'Zogbia? WHAT WHAT WHAT?
Also: Aidan McGeady, £5m from some Russian team. Spotted last night in a Wigan chippy ordering deep fried mars bar and Irn Bru. FIT RIGHT IN.
Gary Hooper deal with totenham agreed - but to move in the summer after Celtic bravely go out of the champions league
*win
*no
definitely no
I did not this this^
source?
else i'm calling bullshit on this
source?
My mouth.
absolute baws
They would be safe and sound if they got 2 of those, doesn't matter which.
@twentynine
I'm excited
Nostalgia mainly. McGeady though... cor. Finally something down our right.
Nothing happening at Liverpool today
Gearing up for an exciting day of lower league clubs loaning players to lower lower league clubs and a couple of people I'd previously forgotten moving to QPR.
Just seen Jack Butland get off a train at Southampton Central
you heard it here first
Southampton do have an almost admirable collection of shit goalies.
Probably one of only about three Premier League clubs who could realistically offer him first-team football, so wouldn't be a huge shock.
will be pretty amazed if niko kranjcar doesn't sign for QPR in the next 12 hours
have heard that David Beckham was seen getting into a car this morning
On his way to QPR?
Danny Simpson and perhaps Xisco to leave Newcastle
according to local press.
Abeid to head out on loan as well.
We've got some French kid coming in too
My Liverpool mates reckon they saw Raheem Sterling getting on his tricycle,
peddling out of Anfield car park while flipping the bird to Brendan Rodgers.
Could be a shock move to Man City on the cards.
Nope
Just confused, he thought it was a tanning booth.
in reference to Beckham.
Oh fuck my ability to click the right reply button.
is this incorporating non-transfer deadline day football stuff?
If you must...
No needlessly defensive stuff about United playing shit again, though...
Got everything crossed that Will Hughes will stay at Derby despite
rumours about Premiership interest. Best young midfielder in the country: he's just become the second-youngest England U21 ever behind Walcott.
I've heard he's very inconsistent?
That's been said. But he isn't the finished article and he has those
flashes of brilliance that change games
Rumours were that we were watching him with any potential deal including a loan back.
There was talk of 12(TWELVE) million which would obviously be ludircrous for a 17 year old.
£12M is crazy money - perhaps based on Walcott's move to Arsenal?
My fingers would be slightly less crossed with that sort of cash - that's a couple of good C/ship players to help the promotion push
Sure it's all paper talk anyway.
I've honestly not seen a second of him play so I have zero opinion on it other than that sort of money seems a bit silly.
Hes good
but not twele million good. Will be some player if he kicks on though
I know it's a very trite English thing to say but he looks very slight.
Based purely on Football Manager...
Big clubs spending lots on 17 year olds makes sense because, by the age of 21, they will have had 3 years training at the club between 15-21, making them completely club-grown (Champions league presently requires 4 of these per squad).
Danny Graham to reject Sunderland and go to Boro instead?
Apparently Newcastle won't pay more than £5m for him so no dream move to the team he supported as a lad.
thatd be a bit weird
hes a good goalscorer at this level
due to the threadsmash this comment is below something about Chris Samba. i like that.
Yikes
Boro released him in 2007. To buy him back for £5m less than five years later would be tough to swallow.
Samba apparently on £100k a week at QPR
Does anyone else think that maybe Tony Fernandes shouldn't be running a football team?
£13m!
+ £100k a week for 3.5 years.
£31.2m...for Chris Samba!!!
wasn't chris samba supposed to be the best central defender in the country last year?
Tranny winders?
The elusive fox-in-the-box/final piece of the jigsaw...
It's a shame that the excitement of deadline day has been overshadowed somewhat
by Bale's goal last night. Oh my.
Doen't seem to struggle against sides in the bottom half as much, does he?
You'd need to be a fan of top-flight football to see how he's been performing this season...
...I guess. He's certainly caused problems for teams throughout the league though, as well as having some off days of course.
Leeds kept him pretty quiet last week
Brave lad. Lucky not to break both legs...
I fear for United against Madrid. Last night's 2nd half performance does
not bode well. If Jose presses United's midfield/defence...YIKES!
Can't see Wanyama happening not until the summer anyway.
Babelcopter still sat unused, looking a bit rusty
bless
Sports psychology of Deadline Day on SSN
:')
is this the general football thread as well?
bayern are going to destroy arsenal. :(
Wonder how many players we'll loan out today.
Doesn't seem Chelsea are gonna sign anyone, so I'd appreciate it if Everton, Spurs and Arsenal did the same.
Got to love '
*arrrggghhh...itchy trigger finger
I do not know why I'm associated with deadline day. I did not do that much business with Spurs
I give up.
*go to love Harry.
*got
Ha.
banging head against desk. Deadline day has already defeated me.
Scharner in on loan to Wigan
Presuming he's not got shit that's a damn good bit of business.
anyway. i only saw extended mexican highlights of the man utd v soton game last night
but to me its proven why i think City will still win the title this season, or at least have a chance; despite having 3 strikers who are good for more than a goal every two games we are massively reliant of Michael Carrick staying fit and playing well, and no matter how good he has been this season (and he's been VERY good for most of it) this shouldn't be the case for a team challenging for the title. if we are as poor in the centre again it wouldn't surprise me if drop four from the next two games.
if we signed Diame today we'd walk it and destroy Madrid. WITH EASE.
ANTI-SWERVING
Southampton were really good last night
It's a shame for them that they don't have a bit more creativity up front. They completely bossed the 2nd half but their only approach up front was either to take 30 yd pot shots or ping it at Lambert, who was owned by Vidic.
Chris Smalling looks rattled at the moment. Dunno what's going on there.
mega anti-bants.
You've already won it, son. Revel in it.
not at all
we have three central midfielders that are suitable to play there, 2 of which have repetitive injury problems. if we can keep two of them fit for the rest of the season, probably is. if we have to resort to playing a CM of Jones-Scholes, it'll be the same as last season. complacency and a weak spine is what cost us late on last year, and i've seen no improvement on either of those.
nah.
You've got through all the hard games; your team getting into a tizzy and pretending a game like Southampton at home was ever in doubt is all part of the show. Meanwhile, we'll keep drawing games and you'll keep winning them. You'll finish 5-6 points ahead.
our record at craven cottage is W-D-L-L-W
and we all know how susceptible we are to muscular Belgians this season.
losing hard games isn't what did us last season, it was a lack of a spine and complacency in the Wigan away and Everton home games.
^ woah, this is whole new level shit.
anti-bantsing the anti-bants of the bants.
I think Jordan_229_2's right. Man City are the better of the two sides, from what i've seen anyway, and i too have got a suspicion that they'll still win the title (though i wouldn't rule out Liverpool doing United a favour this weekend).
I don't have any real preference as to who wins it, but i think United will extend their lead to 10/12 points, then maybe get a bit careless with one eye on the Champions League (they'll beat Madrid). Mancini's not even begun his mind games yet, and we all know what happened to Fergie last time he did.
I don't have any real preference as to who wins it
I don't have any real preference as to who wins it

Will be glad for whoever's been the better team after 38 games to lift the trophy.
Football's so much more enjoyable when you drop the childish, tribal nonsense. Didn't the Olympics show you how enjoyable sport can actually be?
Anyway, i have to go to work. Have a lovely day nearly signing La Liga strikers.
i have to go to work
i have to go to work
i have to go to work
etc...
Just heard David Villa to Spurs on loan might be a goer...
in exchange for first refusal on Bale.
<gulps>
Nah, last night was more about Southampton being very good
We admittedly were very poor as well but they forced the errors. This is going to sound very Fergiebollocksish but the pitch is going to be a real concern in the run-in. There were plenty of times yesterday when the ball held up unexpectedly and affected the players' touches (especially when Rooney got through one-on-one) and it will only get worse.
Never really hoped for an injury to a player before but if the pitch could in some way aid
in incapacitating RVP for even just a little bit I'll be really happy cheers.
It's being replaced in the summer iirc
But yeah, it's looking pretty sad atm.
Footage of Crouch arriving at Stoke's training ground in a clapped out Volvo
:')
shame, i was looking forward to jordans pun.

literally my first thought about Carl Jenkinson was
he looks well more like a Stoke player than an Arsenal player
Hah! Vainqueur!
Sorry...
about half of the players qpr are linked with i assumed already played for them
also, why is Redknapp after Bentley? he hated him when he had him!
No details available
but the Daily Mirror reports that "Harry Redknapp has confirmed his interest in David Bentley"
Because he can't afford Muntari
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2013/jan/31/qpr-harry-redknapp-tottenham
Desperate / insane / bungy
Political cartoon idea:
Redknapp and Berlusconi pictured at a bunga bunga party. Redknapp, wearing a car door around his neck, is presented by Silvio with a nude woman. He looks at her undercarriage, hoping to find a brown envelope.
Make sure they are wearing big labels saying "SILVIO BERLUSCONI" and "HARRY REDKNAPP" respectively
and Harry Redknapp has a speech bubble reading "But where's the brown envelope, Silvio?"
Yep
Ideally they'd both be wearing loads of gold chains/bracelets/rings too.
ALSO, PORTSMOUTH FC
Isn't today the court case, and potentially their last day of existence?
Got deferred until Valentine's Day
seems suitable
thanks! dd wonder why it was a bit quiet. sole source is guy in pub.
i hope so.
That would be sad, but at least other clubs will have taken heed
Can't imagine we'll see some cockney chancer tossing laughably unsustainable amounts of cash around again anytime soon
:'D
:(
you know what i just realised
santos is probably going to be playing against robben.
On the plus side he does make Piers Morgan really, really angry
Had to unblock him on Twitter last night just so I could enjoy his furious blustering
Liverpool will be kicking themselves
for not exploiting his ineptitude enough last night
Nice of him to gift them the chance of a last minute goal,
just in case there was anyone watching who'd so far missed the parallels with Eboue
To be honest, Liverpool looked pretty bobbins last night
Pretty dependent on Suarez to do anything. I know they're only three points behind but I can see them fading rather than putting much pressure on.
RIDICULOUS CHELSEA RUMOURS!!!
Some French clown is claiming Fellaini signing is imminent!
But he's wrong, because the deal Chelsea are really working on is the one that will see Begovic join to somehow replace Courtois, who is a makeweight in the immediate(!) signing of Falcao.
Begovic is far too likeable for Chelsea at present.
Pretty much the only likeable element of Stoke. Can't you sign a dickhead? Who's the modern day Jens Lehmann?
I thought we were the most likeable we've been in ages?
Lots of miniscule continental footballers, a management structure taken straight out of a Fawlty Towers script and to round it all off, we're now really non-threatening. Why won't people like us? :(((
*chubby faced boy looks pleadingly to the referee*
Being disliked is so much more fun when you win every game 2-0
It lingers though. When was the last time Leeds won anything/didn't get relegated?
Exactly.
tbh
I do like Mata. Guys want to be him and girls want to be with him.
Either is fine by me
Actually don't mind Chelsea atm
Kick Terry, Cole and Lampard out and I may even like them. The Mata/Oscar/Hazard trio really are good.
Julie Burchill: Tranny Winders
Well,
I laughed...
any actual transfers yet?
thought not.
C'mon on meths
Put your party hat on, complain about the brussels sprouts and make a joke about Harry Redknapp being in a car.
It's January
er, i meant, i've just seen florent malouda parkouring down Tottenham high street.
so that means he's moved to arsenal then?
that's where tottenham is right?
^ watch out kik
there's a new troll in town

Stanislav Manolev (PSV) to Fulham

David Beckham (free agent, formerly LA Galaxy) to PSG

Nearly forgot;
That Suarez pass to Sturridge last night. Woof.
seeing that in the flesh was was a thing of beauty
John Arne Riise (Fulham) to Arsenal
as Gibbs will be out for at least 3 weeks
Arsenal's defending was comical last night
nah, it was just normal defending
I genuinely can't think of a worse sequence of Premiership defending than Liverpool's first goal
Florian Thauvin (Bastia) to Newcastle
this one involves a helicopter
Heurelho Gomes (Spurs) to Hoffenheim
he's on the plane
we were supposed to be in for that guy
tbh i'm pretty sure he's a left-footed left winger. Wouldn't mind one of those, means we wouldnt ever need to play gervinho
He signed for Lille yesterday didn't he?
And so he did
Four-and-a-half-year deal, but will remain on loan at Bastia for the rest of the season. The helicopter can stay grounded for now.
The helicopter can stay grounded for now.
Rarely has being right been so bittersweet
Chances of Arsenal doing anything...?
Seems unlikely, but hope is the last thing to die.

very sad
that that video doesn't feature his final game at newcastle when he did a lap of honour and he stripped as he went throwing all of his clothes into the crowd
Delightfully mental player
Newcastle used to collect those. Remember when Clarence Acuna was arrested for drunk driving dressed as a pirate?
why is faurlin going?
great player.
Wrong agent
just a loan
has struggled for fitness off the back of a serious injury
SUBTHREAD:
Managers who take players from club to club.
Martin Jol's doing a good job of getting in players that have been mediocre for him in the past. Harry's clearing out Spurs' reserves.
O'Neill and Hughes are guilty of this as well.
Has any manager taken a player to three different clubs? It must've happened a few times in lower leagues, but I can't think of any top flight instances.
harry must have a couple possibilities for QPR..
i bet Warnock has.
allardyce & nolan?
Allardyce didn't take him to Newcastle, did he?
was nolan not signed the january of the relegation season?
if so then it would've been Kinnear or Hughton or the board - not Sam anyway
Allardyce and Abdoulaye Faye I think
Bolton, Newcastle and West Ham.
Big Sam must have done it before
Football Weekly talked about managers repeatedly buying the same players and wondered if this meant that they are bad managers as they not only have only one style of play, but that that one style can't even be transfered to a new set of players
I think it's more having trusted lieutenants who you know and can rely on to do their job and carry your instructions into the team
To use an example from outside of football in the 2005 Lions tour, Woodward picked Greenwood over Henson despite the latter being at that time the better player, because Henson was quite on the pitch, whereas they knew Greenwood from their time with England and that he gave a lot of direction and they could rely on him to get their message to the players
It could just as easily be both
it speaks of a deeply conservative mindset, but conservativism is not necessarily a bad...wait a minute.
^
it's probably not too different from taking your backroom staff with you when you move club.
differs from signing to signing.
Mourinho knows that Carvalho and Essien can still do a job at Madrid. Whilst O'Neill taking Cuellar to Sunderland screams, "shit I need a defender. He'll do."
Warnock loves Paddy Kenny
Deffo had him at 3 clubs, might even be more
just googled, its four.
i can't click on the link as work filter kicks in so can't say who.
I want to say Huddersfield?
Mostly not Premier League
but Peter Taylor's signed Junior Lewis at no less than eight different clubs.
If this wasn't transfer deadline day
I'd write a massive long post moaning about Per Mertesacker's inexplicable unwillingness to attempt to block crosses / shots.
But it is transfer deadline day so I won't.
Because if he sticks one leg too far in the air he falls over
Now go and find the gif of him dancing.
Leeds have sold Becchio to Norwich
That's it, promotion challenge out the window. Relegation next season
i wonder if nestor will support norwich now
doesn't hurt having a seventh premier league team.
Christopher Samba (Anzhi Makhachkala) to QPR
COMPLETED
how much?
12.5 on 100,000 a week according to the beeb
fuck me
No fucking way
Puts little Theo into perspective I guess.
For four and a half years
Christ.
Today truly is redknappocalypse.
It's like an OTT weird fan fiction transfer deadline day come true.
Unreal
Loic Remy: £8M fee + approx £18.5m wages
Chris Samba: £12.5m fee + approx £24m wages
Total: £63m
Redknapp's transfer dealings are getting like Paul Scholes' tackles. Increasingly reckless and ill judged, but just laughed off because 'that's Harry'
that's a great analogy
That's a 47K pay cut for
Chris. Luckily, 100k still goes a long way on the Uxbridge Road.
Genuinely inexplicable
QPR fans must be exasperated.
hardly inexplicable.
QPR need to stay up. They're going to try to do that by keeping clean sheets and countering with Remy and Taraabt.
They're already gone boom or bust with Hughes' signings. There was no way that Harry was going to come up, get money for Boswinga, Cisse, etc, and set up to be promoted back up next season.
but the amounts they're chucking about
if they don't stay up it's got to be Pompey time again
that's been the case since about August though.
maybe they should have fit and proper managers tests
as well as owners ones
yeah, August, the month where Southampton spent double what we did on transfer fees
sorry, I wasn't going to look up whether you got Cisse, Bosingwa, Park, Julio Cesar, Granero and Green on big wages in July or August.
not to pick on you
but i doubt Southampton have anywhere near the wage bill that QPR do
Whether they need Samba in defense is unquestionable
A club in a perilous position as QPR -- four points from safety with two wins in their last two games -- should be careful about overspending £12.5m on one player.
Their problem is immediate. Why, when considered, would you sign an expensive player on a 4.5 year contract?
We've needed a centre back since we've come up
So not really that inexplicable
Also the Pompey comparison is getting a bit tiresome. Our approach isn't without risk, and I do wish we'd take another approach, but I don't remember Pompey being owned by 5 of the richest men in the world
I feel a bit kik-like here
But I really, really doubt he's on £100k a week
That was roughly what he was on in Russia. I'm sure we can knock a bit off for No Racism Tax.
Plus, we've shipped Nelsen, Ferdinand and Cisse - that's about £150k a week off the wage bill.
Sorry to interupt. I'll just wait for needlessly_defensive and you can all get back to your LOLry Redknapp gags
I feel like you've been taking a bit of an unfair battering on here recently LLB
so off the cuff I'd like to say I have nothing against QPR aside from your manager, and the club will always hold a dear place in City fan's hearts for that magical sunny day when you took SWP off our hands.
He's a massive improvement on both Nelsen and Ferdinand as well.
Who would your first choice back four be now?
Nedum Samba Mbia Fabio
Interesting choices.
Did you watch the City-QPR game the other night?
did they player Fabio as an attacker?
defensive winger might be a more accurate description.
In a position where he's needed to defend but not left exposed.
Ned Samba Hill
Left back a tough one. Fabio has impressed me lately but Traore was brilliant on Tuesday night
Mbia plays in central midfield
what about Fabio at right back, Neddy and Samba as CBs and Traore on the left?
200!
Don't really know anything about morison
Hopefully he'll do alright but I'd be disappointed if he becomes the focal point of Leeds
Losing Becchio, though:
On the one hand, Becchio has been the biggest constant of this era, a genuine legend, in our top ten scorers ever and will be missed. Has as good a season as he's ever had this season. And Jesus Christ, norwich again. FFS.
On the other hand, he's a really really limited player - has very little pace, and a lot of his strengths wont be nearly as useful when coming up against better defences than in the championship - occasionally he scores a ridiculous goal but generally he's been a penalties and tap-ins man. I think he'll do alright for norwich, and score them the odd important goal - but I'd be very surprised if he scores more than 10 this season. Though is Snodgrass plays well and puts in some decent balls he'll cause defences problems. His age isn't much of a problem because pace really isn't a part of his game - if it was he really would be some player
I remember saying that our side in league one really wouldn't have finished bottom of the premier league - and I think where a lot of our players have gone from that season have gone on to prove that. Disappointing that if we were in a better financial position, and has been able to keep hold of those players, as well as investing in defence / keeper much sooner, or Byram/Lees had come through at a slightly more opportune time, we'd be comfortably sitting where norwich are now. You have our current defence and organisation + Snodgrass/Howson/Gradel/Beckford/Becchio + possibly Delph if he'd been given a chance to develop more naturally, and that's a comfortably midtable side.
I don't think it will have too much of a negative effect - yes, he was our top scorer and directly contributed to a stupid amount of our points, but our strengths this season have been on the defensive side, so unlike under Grayson we no longer require 4 goals a game to be certain of 3 points. McCormack generally has a lot more to his game, was the championship top scorer last season behind Lambert, and we'll be playing much better football with him in the side - he's arguably a better player and is fit at just the right time. If Diouf carries on his form, and Morison/Somma offer something else unexpected. as well as McCormack playing to his ability, we'll stay on track to finish somewhere between 5th and 10th, as we have been so far - I think Warnock will hopefully adapt less negative football without Becchio's strengths, and Spurs was evidence of that.
do you think you'll be bringing anyone in?
the fee is undisclosed, but i'd guess it'd be around £2-£3m? Does that need to go on debt/financing or will it be made available for a new player?
I doubt it'll be that much
I've heard reports WE'RE giving them Becchio plus cash, which I think must've been mistakes. If we do get money the owners have promised it will be reinvested in the squad, and I have no reason to doubt them. Annoyingly it's happened so late in the window that I'm not sure if we could invest even if we wanted to. Would actually turn out to be an amazing day if we invested in a pacey winger - what we need by a mile - and we'd look much stronger overall.
Not sure who's on the market like that. For all the stick he gets SWP wouldn't be a poor championship player, and QPR seem to be doing a lot today
I'll be keeping a not particularly hopeful eye on the rest of the day's dealings
Our move for him was stopped by Bates
Do you know the psychological perception of accepting a goal against your team because a certain player has a great record against you?
Becchio is Middlesbrough's nemesis. I am happy to see we're insulated against his goals, especially timely as we will play you in a few weeks.
Heh, yeah
Last Leeds match I went to was boro just before Christmas - Becchio scored an absolutely ridiculous goal from the edge of the box, right in front of the stand I was in
With or without Becchio, with our away form you have nothing to worry about. Disappointing as its a 6 pointer if we have any aspirations for 6th.

Urby Emanuelson (AC Milan) to Fulham
COMPLETED (loan until the end of the season)
He's never looked quite good enough for AC
But he's a lovely (loan) signing for Fulham, should give them more than enough to comfortably stay up now, and push on for a top 10 finish.
Yacouba Sylla (Clermont Ferrand) to Aston Villa
COMPLETED
Apparently Gomes is still at Spurs
well I never...
I think AVB and Levy have forgotten he's even on the books, so haven't even bothered trying to sell him

Kevin Phillips
Palace are apparently in talks with Kevin Philips. He is 39 now, but I didn't realise that he scored 16 goals last season, mainly from the bench.
basically if you need a goal with ten minutes to go
stick him on and he will definitely score at least one
Especially if it is against Wolves
He must have score more against us than any other player has.
Modibo Diakite (Lazio) to Liverpool
if his agent gets his way
Ryan Shotton (Stoke) to Birmingham
if Jack Butland goes in the other direction
i know he's a utility player but...
Shotton throws it. Zigic heads it!
obviously he's a cowboy
but why does redknapp get 100% of the blame for blowing cash faster than that lotto lout guy? (love him btw)
Surely Hernandez is ok-ing all this nonsense behind the scenes - it's his money. he should take at least 17% of the blame/ridicule.
Who are the 10 players that big-spending Man City have signed for over £20m?

no.
Still don't quite understand the Danny Graham transfer
He's not a bad player and Swansea are not exactly overburdened in that position, are they? Michu seems to play much better behind someone, his performances tailing off a bit since Laudrup started playing him up front.
i think chopra is saying that no mackem is good enough for newcastle here
Michael Chopra ?@MichaelChopra10
Another Geordie signs for sunderland lol wonder how many mackems sign for the toon #none
but does that not also imply that players who've gone to sunderland (like him) are really desperate?

Not surprising
He's made himself so unpopular there that it's in everyone's best interests that he leaves, although hopefully West Brom will hold out for more bunse.
Botafogo SWOOP for Alex Doni
Who, apparently, was still at Liverpool.
aye, he was released due to his childs illness

weird. Begovic must be off. Chelsea?
He's going straight back to Birmingham on loan by the looks of it
so I doubt Begovic is going anywhere right now. United or Liverpool in the summer, maybe.
Oh of course, Liverpool might be shopping in summer
If we are I'd prefer it if we went for Julio Cesar.
Apparently he'd be loaned back to Brum for the rest of the season
So...Cech/DDG off in the summer to be replaced by Begovic with Butland taking over at Stoke. Yes? Yes.
aye. i don't want DDG to go though... :(

THINK AGAIN
"Sky Italia are now reporting that Roma goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg has in fact boarded a flight to London thinking that he's on his way for talks with Fulham. He's apparently expected to land at London Heathrow at 1910. Unbeknownst to Stekelenburg, 35,000ft below, Roma have stopped the deal. Pity the man who has to break it to him at arrivals."

T-I-D-Y.
great to see a football league match on sky
without peter beagrie as a pundit
;-D
Just heard Di Canio blasting Balotelli, saying he's a player who's "achieved nothing".
Di Canio: 2 major honours (1 UEFA Cup, 1 Serie A title) in a 23-year career
Balotelli: 3 Serie A titles, 1 European Cup, 1 Premier League title, 1 FA Cup by the age of 21.
balotelli could only dream
of playing with world-class players such as graham hyde and jon newsome
Where's the soundbite is from?
If true. that's class

Di Canio in dubious attitude towards black player shocker.

Gareth from Los Campesinos has changed his name...

the whole odemwingie thing is really kinda grim
redknapp is SUCH a cunt. Hate him so much.
I can remember the hero's welcome he got when he first signed for west brom
don't think they'll be so welcoming next time he goes there
SSN: unnamed premier league club trigger Diame's release clause
At least one club has triggered Mo Diame's release clause.
Everton?
qpr?
Chris Kamara just said it might be Spurs on Twitter.
Diame seems to be rated a lot higher by people who don't support West Ham.
Strikes me as a bit of a highlights player. Sort of a budget Yaya Toure, only about 10% as good, and ten times more inconsistant. The one West Ham fan i know has always thought it a bit funny he's been linked with Arsenal, says he can barely control a football some games.
according to john percy (telegraph journalist)
it's fulham
leandro deal might be hard to sort out in time
if only the transfer window was open for more than one day.
classic Levy anti-bants.

The world's gone fucking mad.
Surely the human tub of lard that is Grant Holt has to be off to Villa?
how is that mad
Would Arsenal fans have welcomed Wenger making a move for Diame?
yes
NO!!!!
Willian to Anzhi for €35m.
This sort of deal is really ruining football.
lol
how is it any worse than the bs going on the Premier League?
Roughly what Ajax apparently wanted for Eriksen.
...who's a less experienced, less in-demand player.
Ajax asked for £20m. Would probably settle for a bit less.
So just more than half what Willian cost Anzhi.
Nope.
English clubs were quoted €30m last summer, i'm afraid.
£20m is the figure quoted in most news stories.
anyone watching leicester vs. wolves?
ABSOLUTE BLOOTER from sako.
LOVE transfer window
people turn MENTAL
got a bit boring now
something happen
just imagining harry redknapp doing a dad run from a car to QPR's offices going `we've triggered the release clause it was a great dezizzion john` (always talking to someone called john)
odemwingie apparently turned up of his own volition
and qpr turned him away
I've got a mental image now of him desparately shouting 'let me in'
through the letterbox.
odemwingie refused entry to the building at QPR, just insane.
almost feel bad for my redknapp hating ^this now. almost.
Why?
just another bit of self-preservation from Redknapp, isn't it, like him saying earlier that he played no part in the deal to sign Samba. He's in on all this, he's a cunt. Odemwingie, his agent and Redknapp will know what's going on, they're trying to force West Brom into a corner, they've just panicked a bit, knowing that actually letting him into the building would be about as blatant proof of tapping up as would be possible.
I hope West Brom hold their nerve and don't let him go. They probably won't.
Well
was he refused entry, or have QPR hastily produced a statement saying he wasn't so that they aren't done for tapping him up?
I find it somewhat unlikely
(if not impossible) that he has driven from Birmingham to London to make an unsolicited rattle on QPR's front door.
Lovely finish from Nugent.
How many games do we think Brek Shea will ever start for Stoke?

I really hope West Brom sit Odemwingie down and make him explain exactly what Redknapp/QPR said to him

Missed the biggest news of the day...
Matti Lund Nielsen has joined Verona on loan, with option to buy, from Pescara, despite being a first team regular for Pescara. Hopefully Pescara will go down and Verona will go up.
no thanks
pescara are a lovely club, verona are a bunch of nazi cunts. i really wish their miraculous miracle scudetto had gone to a nice team. italy really doesn't need another major platform (ie. sky coverage) for the type of scum that support hellas.
hellas?
hellas verona
as opposed to chievo verona
as much as chievo bore me i find it really fucking funny that they've been serie a regulars while hellas have been in serie c1.
actually pescara can go down if palermo and genoa stay up
so many shit leeds/norwich jokes on facebook
how do i even know three fucking norwich fans?!
has this been a terrible transfer deadline day
it feels like a terrible transfer deadline day. What the fuck is happening with Darren Bent? thought he would definitely be flogged ANYWHERE
thought your lads have just signed the best player in League One for a pittance?
yeah, happy with our business this window, for sure
also managed to move on our two Marquee signings, the two dutch lads from the Eredivisie, fat Frank and the shit Davids who played about 3.5 games in total.......just feel (other than some classic Harry BANTS) today has been a bit quiet......
Wagons have signed some kid from Spurs
Just what they need.
simon dawkins
lambert is a fuckin joke
also kid?
he is 25
I'm seriously considering putting £50 on them finishing 20th

Bet he didn't see that coming.
Matt Upson was still at Stoke?!
He's just signed for Brighton until end of season
yup
Can Arsenal hurry up and confirm the signing of that actual left back?
I'm getting worried.
Hang on, you're breaking the rules here, Sky.
'Arry can only be interviewed through a car window, not in reception.
ENGLAND SQUAD vs Brazil:
Goalkeepers: Jack Butland (Birmingham), Joe Hart (Man City).
Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Joleon Lescott (Man City), Chris Smalling (Man Utd), Kyle Walker (Spurs).
Midfielders: Michael Carrick (Man Utd), Tom Cleverley (Man Utd), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Aaron Lennon (Spurs), James Milner (Man City), Leon Osman (Everton), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal).
Forwards: Jermain Defoe (Spurs), Wayne Rooney (Man Utd), Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool), Daniel Welbeck (Man Utd)
not too much to moan about. caulker perhaps should have gotten ahead instead of smalling or maybe lescott, but don't think either will start anyway.
Caulker's not been playing as much recently, has he?
Naughton's been playing left-back with Vertonghen central.
Would quite like to see a team like this...
Butland, Smalling, Jagielka, Cahill, Baines, Carrick, Cleverly, Wilshere, Chamberlain, Sturridge, Welbeck
Realistically, probably more likely to be...
Hart, Johnson, Jagielka, Cahill, Cole, Gerrard, Lampard, Walcott, Cleverly, Chamberlain, Rooney
i honestly can't bring myself to care
i'd rather smalling played at CB though. johnson is a much better RB than him anyway.
and not sure on Caulker? haven't seen Spurs that much post-xmas but when i've seen him he's looking very good.
he's been playing a fair bit
against Man U and then had a poor game against Leeds, didn't play at Norwich though.
some talk that mcleish has quit forest
oh i hope so!
He was sacked after poking George Boyd in the eye
Going back to sort out
Wagons.
George Boyd
Apparently it was over the George Boyd transfer. Peterborough and Boyd agreed terms with Palace yesterday. Forest beat our offer on wages which we wouldn't match. Boyd failed his medical with a slight vision problem and forest used it as an excuse to get out of the deal.
that John Stones...
seems like a thoroughly nice young man.
walking in a John Stones wonderland!
Transfers today
Even less exciting than usual :(
2302: DONE DEAL- Nacho Monreal, Malaga to Arsenal
Thank fuck for that. The prospect of seeing Andre Santos run around in circles for the next month was making me feel ill.
I think we needed someone to take pressure off Gibbs too. Not sure he was progressing as well as he should have - hopefully the increased competition will see him kick on, and we can, for the first time in absolutely ages, have two actually good full backs who can play the same side.
don't worry, you'll still see Santos in the CL!
Surely we'll play Vermaelen out there and Koscielny will come in?
Still not ideal, I know. Haha etc.
During the summer we need to sign a centre back who doesn't have his lips sewn shut. Someone who can actually organise a defence. Wouldn't be sad to see Vermaelen shipped out for a big fee and a genuine leader brought in to replace him to be honest. There's no way we're gonna be able to sell Mertesacker and one of them has to go unless they both learn to play with a bit more passion, urgency and direction.
Monreal's a good player.
Probably one of the best ten left-backs in Europe. Rated as the best left-back in Spain after Jordi Alba at least. if Malaga didn't need cash to pay off creditors quick he'd have cost about £20m. Yet to be seen if Wenger ruins him like he has done with virtually every defender Arsenal have had for about five years, obviously.
gibbs had been great the past couple of months!
also yeah jordan he wont play in the cl, vermaelen will
hope so.
Vermaelen at left-back's really, really, really funny.
maybe
dunno what that makes santos though
He was absolutely terrible in a couple of games I saw
I think it was the Newcastle game he was at fault for all three goals. He's obviously a talent but he needs more consistency and better decision making in both defence and attack. He's definitely a strong alternative rather than a first choice, i'm very glad we've signed this new guy if he turns out to be as good as he's meant to be.
very capable left back
looks like peter crouch tho
not seen a window this dull since 1.01
There's something a little depressing about an evidently nice lad like Jack Butland signing for a club like Stoke.
Although I can entirely understand that it's an astute move from his point of view. Better than warming the bench at Stamford Bridge at any rate.
all assuming Stoke sell Begovic, of course.
bit frustrating that despite the cup revenue it seems like every team around us has strengthened more than we have
i still think we've got one of the best first XIs in the league though, and without the cup stuff we'd be in an automatic place. and i reckon we might still bring a midfielder in on loan. and andrew davies should be back in a few weeks which'll be like a million new signings.
stoke fans aaargh
Odemwingie's facebook page is entertaining
youre a prick im not a west brom fan but your disgraceful disrespect to west brom today is a shambles. clearly only wanting move qpr for the money cus it certainly cant be for ambition or cus theyre higher in the league. so dont come with that crap. west brom if they have any sense given hes always benched anyway should shove him in the reserves for the rest of the season. by time which at the end cus of his age he wont have played for so long no one will want him. west brom dont need players like this. no club does. hes a well proven disease and the type of player that is wrong about football these days. would have been hilarious if hed broken down on the way back to the midlands ha. hope hes booed for rest of the season.
you tell him pal
you don't need this disaese
oh, dem whinge
is something happening behind the scenes at villa that's an open secret in football?
some of the signings they are making are startling; they're more league one than premiership.
troy deeney turned them down earlier. troy deeney.
Neil Warnock was certainly busy yesterday
