245 deaths, fucking hell
similar thing - band, pyrotechnics, lack of exits...
Just as the fire was starting. I couldn't really watch it. The look on peoples faces as the reality of the situation kicked in was too much.
how quickly it spreads. and shots from outside, at about 6 mins in you can actually see someone run out who is ON FIRE
But also, thousands of people have died of malaria (etc etc) since then. So, not sure I'm gonna get too upset.
think people are rightly shocked when someone does something as stupid as letting a band put on a firework display in a nightclub with no fire exits causing 230 entirely preventable deaths, of entire groups of friends, in one community.
Interestingly, it's also holocaust memorial day. We don't have candlelit vigils for everyone who has ever died, ever.
rather than it being about the deaths being entirely preventable, or it being a large group of people in one community; these latter 2 points are equally applicable to diseases and starvation.
Explosions and fire is exciting and new (and often preventable). Diseases are old and boring (and often preventable).
- the nightclub owners or directors, the local authority, relevant regulators.
And why does being upset about this means we think disease is boring? Can you not care about global health and also one-off tragedies?
and reducing infectious disease takes loads of time over a long period. But perhaps if the media treated it as 'news', with more headline reports about how things are progressing, it would help put pressure on politicians and those involved in development to prove that what they are doing actually works.
And yeah, of course we can care about both, but even though I find it shocking I just don't really feel any sadness about it.
reminded me a wee bit of when that dick from blue(?) said about dolphins dying after 9/11.
But I'm sure you're not as daft as him or meant it as callously.
i believe it was 'who gives a fuck about new york when there are elephants and whales dying'
when we start to learn something from past mistakes?
