but I was hoping for a more serious discussion about their methods.
is somehow an incredibly awesome (although ridiculous and nonsensical) idea
they're all white, blonde, slim and shaved.
I used to support them but they're really problematic and like 99% white, heteronormative and very Islamophobic.
to be anything but 99% white
(France where at least 15% of people are non-white).
Their protest at the Olympics (where one of them dressed up as 'a muslim') was just rubbish
just a ukrainian organisation
and really pissed off lots of other groups over here by being attention grabbing and incoherent.
I don't like them. Their message doesn't carry over, they're just attention seekers and I dislike the way they use their bodies - I think it's pretty counterproductive for anyone to be shouting 'respect me' whilst screaming and semi-naked. They turn up at protests for five minutes, get naked and then disappear, and the next morning all the press coverage is just their tits on front of a page, nothing about the rest of the protest.
When one of them got punched and had her nose broken by catholic protest groups you could tell they loved it. They were so happy to have got a reaction. They are essentially baiting people to attack them and then feeding off the media storm they can whip up. Purely provocative.
they won't tell anyone how they get the money to fund full-time staff. Kinda makes me worried they're being propped up by a creepy rich man somewhere.
there's a finite amount of press coverage available for publicity stunts (even more so for the very positive, non-attention grabbing things that women's groups do).
I think their feminism is exclusionary.
That they want to give the message to women in oppressive societies that there's another way and they should be able to do outrageous things without being beaten to death with rocks or hung.
Same with Pussy Riot, sometimes handing out leaflets in shopping malls just doesn't cut it.
Basically, by being annoying and provocative, they're trying to shift what is seen as 'normal'.
Well possibly not, but it's an ok theory.
And why women taking their clothes off seems sordid and worthy of attention.
apart from breast fetishism and an already highly objectified body?
and implying that Muslim women have no agency to figure out for themselves which aspects of their culture are oppressive and what they need to change is just quite offensive. They should talk to some Muslim feminists (yeah they exist omg imagine!)
What you on about handing leaflets out in shopping malls. Lol.
The goals of Muslim feminists shouldn't be any different to feminists from any other cultures.
I admit the way they go about it is crude, but they're obviously gunning for headlines in countries where reasoned debate through the media is perhaps decades off. The message is wholesale rejection of the way women are expected to act in society and to give the patriarchies in oppressive societies nigtmares. Good on 'em I say.
'the goals of Muslims feminists shouldn't be any different'
No. White feminsts can't claim to speak on behalf of non-western women nor can they just universalise their experiences to fit women globally. The goal of ALL feminists should be the liberation of ALL women from ALL forms of oppression. Anything else = bullshit.
If the 'goal' of femen doesn't involve listening to the women who find femen's protest offensive, essenstialising of their experience and irrelevant to their lives, or account for this in any way, it can't really be concerned with their liberation and is just colonial.
it was quite alarming.
