DiS 11-a-side Football // WV-HEDW Tournament in Amsterdam // Saturday 18 May and Sunday 19 May

We have been invited to participate in the 11th edition of the WV-HEDW International Fraternization Tournament, which is to be held on Saturday 18 May and Sunday 19 May 2013 on the pitches of WV-HEDW, one of the oldest and biggest football clubs of Amsterdam. There will be teams from Poland, Germany, Belgium, Italy, France, England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Holland, all playing at more or less "our" level.
On Saturday from 12 PM, all teams will play 3 games (either on full-sized grass or astro pitches) of 2x15 minutes each. At about 4:30 PM a huge BBQ will be held next to the club house, including live music by one of the WV-HEDW club bands. The organisers have kindly asked if there are any musicians in each team who can take their instruments to the tournament, for additional post-match entertainmant.
On Sunday, again from 12 PM, all teams – or what’s left of them – play three games of 30 minutes each again. It should all be wrapped up by 5 PM.
The cost per player will be somewhere between £140 and £180. This will cover flights, 2 nights accomodation, the BBQ and the tournament fee. Whatever you plan to spend on drinking will come on top of that.
I've been looking at flights leaving from Gatwick at 7 PM on Friday evening, returning about 7:20 PM on Sunday, but there are plenty of other options from different airports around London. It is possible to fly out on Saturday morning, but we would have to take off before 8 AM.
If you are keen to participate, state your interest by replying below. We need between 11 and 15 volunteers. No need to commit 100% yet but I'd like to see if we have sufficient numbers to enter a team.

silky say's he'll meet up with you at the grasshopper.
Tentative IN.
Would obviously depend on other factors, but would definitely do my best to attend.
RAD
I'm interested. Weekend after ATP TVOTR so looking into how viable it is. Will get back to you as soon as I can.
100% IN
Oh wow. tentative IN at the moment.
It's the weekend after TVOTR ATP and the one before Porto Primavera, so there's a free slot there, but I might have to ask permission from 'er indoors, especially as it's likely to be around when we're moving house.
Hup Holland Hup!
110% IN, can't wait to give those Dutch ballboys a good shoeing.
Bet they are a bunch of cloggers!
Amazing
I'd love to go, but given that I will by then be in charge of a two month old baby I'm going to have to decline
Congratulations!
cheers
Congratualtions!
Ahem.
Congratulations!
cheers
No excuse, really, mate.
I think the manager might have doubts about my commitment
If any of us actually manage to score
We're definitely doing the rocking the baby celebration in your honour. You can watch us back home on ITV4.
YAY
Congratulations!
I might actually be in a position to come to this
Possibly. I'm still not really sure how much I spend each month but my bank balance seems to be going up every month rather than down so I can probably afford it.
Have you tried interacting with the Board to increase your salary budget?
Tentative IN
Sounds like a great plan.
I'm so pleased with the event pic on facebook that I feel compelled to share it here:
http://i50.tinypic.com/2ni42sw.jpg
That's beautiful
Should go to Utrecht instead.
Amsterdam's a bit of a shithole, truth be told.
IN
probably
danny blINd
... provisionally.
Oh man I'd love to do this
But with Primavera a week or so later, not sure I can stretch to it...
Finances allowing, in
Can we have a link to this fraternatization organisation?
This isn't some kind of skinhead weekend, is it?
yeah
who are these people who are conveniently about as good as us at football?
ex-professional OAPs?
reasonably talented Dutch second-tier under-11 squads?
sophisticated footballing robots currently in the beta testing stage?
Link can be found in the OP
But from the blurb they have sent me: "The intention of the tournament is quite simple: to let people from all over Europe have a good time, take a beer (or two), have a talk, and meet each other as friends. So, if you have some minor injured, severely crippled, 50+, and/or even debuting players in your team, don’t worry – your opponent probably will have too... please no ‘all-star’ teams, but teams with a slight or rather explicit preference for the famous Third Half."
Their website is all in German or French or something
No 'all star teams'?
Looks like I'm not needed then guys...
I literally live 400m away from this place
definitely going to pop by
Must be Hoogy's long lost son
aboynamedpoo
We all live about 400 miles from there too!
I am expressing a non-committal INterest
Nice work, Ady
100% would like to be in for this please

Request:
Once the team has been finalised, can we have weekly practices for a month or so beforehand? Please?
Jesus James says he's in btw
willing to bet about 4 people turn up
circle the wagons guys
we've got an intruder ^
How much?
You could pay for our flights!
I would really like to play in this
Not sure if there would be room or if I will definitely be about but hypothetically would LOVE to be considered. Sounds awesome.
I would absolutely love to be involved in this.
YES YES YES
holy shit i've just seen this properly.
sounds brilliant. count me in, mates stag-do weekend dates to be confirmed permitting.
Can we bring our own ref?
What ish the Dutsch fer 'well in'?
this rolls straight into the barca primavera
theoretically i'd like to be IN for this but need to adjust my realism specs to see if it's possible, both logistically and finiancially.
17 people have indicated they are keen
Pretty impressive.
We should discuss our plans a bit further on Sunday, as we probably need to sort out flights before the end of this month.
Import memo dispatched
Check your email and/or PMs, please.
thanks for clarifying that amsterdam is in a different timezone ady.

The DiS team have now officially entered the tournament. The organisers responded as follows when receiving our entry: "This is great news! Hope you’re in good shape, when arriving in Amsterdam, next May! Have a good time and see you then!". They may have been a little overexcited.
When are we starting the 'Design our kit' competition?
http://bluemoonsport.kit-designer.co.uk/
You have 2 weeks to pick your favourite
but any attempt to go for "eros" (http://www.bluemoonsport.co.uk/football_kit_eros.html) will be vetoed.
Sweeeeet
Are we definitely going red?
Yes
This gets my vote
http://www.bluemoonsport.co.uk/football_kit_listada.html
Play like Stoke, dress like Stoke.
I can vouch for Errea kits being really good
http://www.prosocceruk.co.uk/?i=268593&colour=redwhite
Is nearly £20 (shirt, shorts, socks) too much?
A tenner, but maybe a bit crap:
http://www.prosocceruk.co.uk/?i=476047&colour=redwhiteblack
Who's sorting the matchday suits?
i designed a great kit for us but closed the page down by accident.
sorry.
Strong team
Go on lads!!
Good luck guys!
Disappointed that I can't commit to this one.
Next May?
That's a lot of preparation time.
Would be great if we can convince a keeper to join us.
^
oenso?
Loui_Tacceh?
eltham?
I'd be happy to chip in a couple of quid if we want to subsidise a keeper
We really could use one
^ this.
can't we pick up a continental style keeper while we're there?
i'm sure we could pay SOMEONE to do it, we are going to amsterdam after all...
I'll uh mention it to my wife
Doubtful, but I do have *one* trick up my sleeve - she spent four days partying in Amsterdam last year with her friend - this would be payback of sorts.
I can't promise anything though. How long do I have to make a decision (plane tickets needing to be bought etc)?
Am guessing oenso's already turned down the batsignal...
Plane tickets are already bought so you'd need to sort your own
but ohgood will pay £2 towards your flight costs.
In theory, you can postpone a decision until a few days beforehand
But the longer you wait, the more expensive the flights are likely to be. For reference, we paid £114 per person.
VERY LOUD *darts music*
oi oi lads!
I don't blame them - who wouldn't be excited?
A week before coming home to blighty,
Scanning the social board for the next football date, and this is what I find. There's a clash with a stag do that I can't afford and where I probably won't be missed, so it's an even toss up with this I guess. Let me know if its too late hoogster x
Gutted
I couldn't confirm in time. best of luck. Live stream?
Can I make a radical suggestion?
If we're playing at least some of this tournament on grass [insert by-numbers Amsterdam joke here] then can we have a warm-up game/training session on a grass pitch beforehand? For the first time in a long while, I played 90 mins on a park pitch at the weekend and it's a completely different feel to our astro-turf matches.
In Manchester it took us about 60 mins to get into the game and at least a bit of that was not having played together on a grass pitch before I'm sure.
We've already mooted having some training sessions to prepare in the month leading up
I'd agree that a bit of practice on grass would be good, but grass pitches in Feb/Mar are quite different to grass in mid-May. Unless Amsterdam is quite rainy (Hoogs?).
Also think we should resurrect the grand DiS tradition of playing the 'regular' game beforehand with the 'tournament' team vs the rest.
^ With the tournament team boosting its morale nicely
by getting soundly trounced.
That is the tradition
how hilarious would a 'training session' be?
and how long would it last (in seconds)?
Quite

I don't fancy your chances.
Wwhat does WV-HEDW stand for?
is it something sinister?
Will’s voyeurism: Hoogy eats Dutch waffles
It didn't make a lot of sense in the years before there was a DiS team entered into the tournament.
Or before Chris started playing.
re: your voyeurism yeah?
I'm scared
[Calmly] Nobody expects us to get a result so just go out there and enjoy playing without any pressure on you.
We Victory? - Hey, Everything Depends on Waffle
Is Chris playing up front?
Yes, he's waffly versatile!
:D
should've saved that for the plane
nailed it though
guys, take it easy on the voyeurism and Dutch waffles this weekend please, it's getting old
Wilhelmina Vooruit-Hortus Eendracht Doet Winnen
obviously
According to Google translate
Wilhelmina Forward Hortus Eendracht Does Winning.
Helpful.
can't work out if I'm looking forward to this or not
Pros: football in Amsterdam
Cons: you're sharing a bed with Hoogy again
you mixed the pros and cons up
I've been listening to nothing but *darts music* for 3 days now
Useful phrases:
Buitenspel!
Bevuilen gooien!
Tijd!
Doel!
In je gezicht, eurotwats!
And of course:
Jongens op reis!
(this one really doesn't work btw)
Thought of another one:
Grote pen acteren
Goed innnnn!
is the Dutch for 'eurotwats' really 'eurotwats'?
Guess we'll find out
Yes, but with a very strong low countries accent
still havent got any new boots.
or decided if i need boots at all.
Just read this in a comedy Dutch accent, well hyped:
Saturday May 18th (Whit Saturday) and Sunday, May 19th (Whit Sunday) 2013 will take place on the fields of WV-HEDW again the International Tournament Verbroederings place. With teams from Poland, Germany, France, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands.
About 24 teams, mostly from all over Europe, going again this year, "the battle for the highest honor '- whatever that may be and including the infamous' veterans' 40 + group who should avoid too youthful enthusiasm exceeds the slightly slower but very refined game of some of our tournament traditionally associated Scottish and Irish teams now but have chosen something like sporty with their feet and the third or fourth half by far their main battlefield have made.
So is there on Saturday again this year plenty of features live music brought by one of the many (cover) bands that are directly or indirectly linked to our club. After the group matches There will also be a distance between the canteen and the main field of the traditional and extensive BBQ area. After the teams until late in the evening / night have the ability to connect with the other participating teams (and optionally under the table to drink, extended contact on the benches and chairs, or even on the canteen I had there to add Sander carefully).
Incidentally records some of the foreign participants traditionally one or more musicians to the tournament. For example, a few years ago we had one of the best fiddlers from Scotland here, plus a very professional Polish accordion player from the picturesque lake under Gda?sk. It has resulted in the canteen to some memorable group sessions.
And we had not even the next day. For although, after many a foreign team undoubtedly brackish night full of canals and bars, on Sunday afternoon after the semi-finals etc. next to a giant group indeed a real ceremony takes place, this tournament is mostly for fun and for international establish contacts.
Hence the official and equally monstrous denomination: 'WV-HEDW International Twinning Tournament. And that's why the teams preferably from the lowest echelons of their respective national competitions. Coming In other words, no longer relegated to participate in this tournament is a plus.
Anyway, just come take a look. The level is underused, but the stereo's doing probably, the beer is cold and who knows you succeed, after raising the last dust clouds, while enjoying this or that cool aftertaste or freshly toasted slice sjaslik still contact connect with that attractive looking cluppie from London, Edinburgh, Berlin, Brusy, Porto Ceresio, Ghent or Martigues like that but what if your team next season with them comes balls.
Oh, and if you have a foreign team knows that the next year to the twelfth - or was it fourteen? - Pentecostal edition wants to join, let me know.
looking forward to the extended contact on the benches and chairs
...while enjoying this or that cool aftertaste
still contact connect with that attractive looking cluppie from London, Edinburgh, Berlin, Brusy, Porto Ceresio, Ghent or Martigues like that but what if your team next season with them comes balls!
(I'm slightly trouble by what this means...)
Typo included to suit comedy Dutch accent
:D
A comedy Dutch accent is funny. It just is.
Hoogy, have you planned a brackish night for us on the Saturday?
and if not, why not?
I'll add some salt to your Ribena
^^Definitely sharing a bed again
What's the schedule for Sunday?
Is it just finals or are there more group games? Seem to remember something about some of the teams leaving before the end of the tournament. I was hoping to be able to get to see some of Amsterdam in the daytime on Sunday too.
On Sunday we're playing 3 matches as well
Leaving the hotel 11 AM, we'll be playing from 12 PM until 5 PM, after which we'll have to set out for the airport straight from the ground.
Not sure there will be much time to do touristy stuff during the day.
this is a weird thing we're doing isn't it?

fuck, i mean this
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/social/4424034#r7506024
Ah right, OK
In which case I'll probably aim to get the last couple of hours of daylight on Saturday to have a bit of a wander, so probably leave straight after getting some food, and then meet up with the folks that stayed later on.
I’m getting up early on Saturday (possibly even Sunday too) to go to the Rijksmuseum for a couple of hours when it opens at 9
Gonna book me a ticket tonight. Happy to book others if anyone else wants to go.
#LADSONTOUR #DARTSMUSIC #REMBRANDT
dont worry, the 'Rijksmuseums' are open all night.
Really? Strange it doesn't mention that on their websi... Wait a minute, you're not talking about art are you!?
it's kind of an art.
I'd be up for that
LET'S GO NUTS
Excellent - I hope Henrik doesn't get jealous!
Tickets are €15 and it sounds like hard work if you don't book one in advance. Anyone else that wants me to book them a ticket, reply here before 8pm tonight and I shall.
#HALSONTOUR
(^^Great Dutch art pun)
Have no fear
He wants to go as well. Cheers!
(Dunno about him, but I'm Saturday morning only)
jesus wept guys.
Imagine how HYPED they're all going to be for the football though
It's OK
We'll still be obeying the rules:

great touch
using roman numerals.
yeah, I'm in too please
we're adults now and we can define what being lads and being on tour means
No
Disgraceful organising of sensible activities when the Lads are quite clearly On Tour
Again.
(Hoogy, stop this madness now)
^sure a lot of the cliched lads on tour stuff is bollocks
but jfc c'mon people. If Meths is not forced to smoke an AK47/White Widow cocktail before playing wingback 5 games in a row I'm going to be severly let down.
At least chuck something in a canal for gods sake.
Ah, we were planning on throwing Meths in the canal
but you might have spoilt the surprise.
throw him in front of a tram
keep him guessing
FOUL THROW!
Know any good laundrettes in Amsterdam, Ady?
Not looking forward to getting up on Sunday and putting on Saturday's smelly kit.
Also: any luck on the shirts?
PS 'Know any good laundrettes' is my best chat up line, you should feel honoured
i'm just going to play naked on the second day.
Still not bought any boots, huh?

A worthwhile trip then
Look! We've brought a trophy back from Amsterdam!

Wondering if the winners' trophy was 16x bigger
(Well done all, v. proud)
*wipes tear from eye
When's the "victory" parade?
Chris?
pretty sure we left him behind
Hoogy nights
Best opposition: The Scots
Most anarchic opposition: The Poles
Worst opposition: The Dutch
yeah, the Scotch are nice to play against
next DiS trip should be a tour of remote Scottish islands, playing teams of old guys, birdwatching (for those so inclined) and kicking down ancient dry stone walls (for the rest of us)
Do they have any canals that need filling up?
^he's fine, everyone!
we were worried sick
Best referees: The English
everything hurts.
well done lads (lads lads lads). even though we lost 5, 3 of those were due to exhaustion on the second day. next year, no 10 jagers for 10 euros and i reckon we can make the top 14. on day 1 we played pretty well/alright.

That got me stressed for a good 10 mins
I'd forgotten to bring the spare gloves.
Chris tackled her first!
If we'd won the pens
and/or that late shot onto the post/across the line had gone in, then we'd have been guaranteed a top 12 finish.
Fine margins.
Or if the Polish referee hadn't been sleepwalking
It's just two people
