it still doesn't work
Glad to help.
on my work pc and it's working fine
Then blank screens. Weird.
We're not sure what's causing it.
Deal with the ads that a relatively small-budget website needs to pay the bills.
i've tried that and it still doesn't work
So it doesn't work with it either on or off? What browser you using?
and he's saying 'no thanks' to the suggestion of turning it off completely.
but DiS ads are so obnoxious, it's always flash stuff that makes the pages lag
right now i'm being bombarded with AT&T flash ads, those cunts already take $100 a month from me
Adblock is like the most stable and solid browser extension ever, totally works fine on every single other site i've visited.
in the top right hand corner, click the adblock logo and click "Don't run on pages on this domain"
or go through options and add dis as a whitelisted domain
it's the way things should be
you either pay for goods & services or have them subsidised by ads, if you aren't prepared to do either then dont moan when it doesnt work
as I've said before, still waiting for a DiS fund raiser.
I have said on numerous occasions that I am happy to donate to the website to get this thing fixed. This site has entertained and informed me for 10 years. It has opened my ears to multitudes. It has helped me meet some fantastic people. It has enriched my life. I'd happily donate money to it. And yet Sean (for all his fine work), avoids the question whenever it's raised. Sean, let me give you some cash FFS mate.
Not dodging if. There are just a lot of legal issues with accepting donations. If someone gives money they need to get some kind of service. It's a law to protect people from the fact any dickhead can say they're a charity.
Maybe whoever I asked was being over-protective. I was gonna wait until people are over the Xmas slump of cash and do a Kickstarter campaign.
it doesn't work because it doesn't work.
But they're not. They're shovelled up onto my screen by automated means. And they're often intrusive (in terms of being able to read the content of the site, in terms of load times and data usage, etc...). And using similarly automated means to block them is trivial, so the whole thing is an exercise in futility (as far as advertisers are concerned).
If the shovelled up ads were the be all and end all, sean could easily make this lockout of adblock users an intentional thing. But things are a little more complex than that. The adblock users aren't intentionally blocked, despite it being entirely possible (as seen by this bug).
So the question is... why doesn't sean block the blockers?
Is the answer that he needs them, in order to keep readership numbers up, in order to sell ads? I suspect it is. Which roughly translates as sean selling snake oil. Can't really blame him for playing the game. Good on him.
I'm not that evil. I accept that the world is full of freeloading twunts. I also know that the 'indie' anti-corp stance is to be expected.
Thankfully the bulk of the people who end up on the dubstep songs or meat in my GF threads, don't end up with ad blockers.
One if the reasons why people see crappy ads on dis is most premium campaigns are capped at 5 page views per user. We also only sell ads in the UK so the stuff people outside the UK see is just Google ads which make us a pittance.
We haven't had any intrusive ads for about a year.
This is as much as saying that your adblocking members aren't necessarily 'freeloading twunts' but quite possibly highly successful content producers for whom you might say the right to Adblock is their payment.
If adblock users are freeloading twunts, just block 'em. The recent bug proves it's a trivial technical step to do so.
The only reason not to block adblock users is that they're contributing something in some way.
But (putting that bug to one side) blocking adblock users is a relatively trivial technical exercise, right?
so easy to block adblock. OH NO WAIT
by selling this bug to google/youtube :D
i just have chrome set to not allow plugins to automatically launch. that way, the annoying flash stuff gets blocked, but the simple image-based ones do not.
i hate stuff autoplaying anyway. you just click on it to launch the plugin, and there's options to load all plugins on page, and to whitelist certain sites.
but it doesn't work at all with adblock on OR off through Firefox on my Macbook
