Pat Finucane - another Thatcher era crime

such a weasely statement by Cameron about this today - full of foregrounding and overreaching and schoolmaster bruhaha
another whitewash masquerading as action

Similar to what I said in the other thread:
If this isn't a state conspiracy to murder, it seems to be pretty close to it.
well yeah
it seems pretty clear that it quite possibly is just that
and when you couple it with the fact that Cameron refused a full public inquiry, despite assurances from the previous Government that a full public inquiry would take place
... you can't help but be suspicious
also, the interview with the sons on Radio4 today was compelling
the piece with the family previewing the report is here
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01p71w8/Today_12_12_2012/
Will listen to that later on, cheers
yeah, the main thing starts just before 2h 17m
Never heard of this man until this morning.
No point in commenting really.
well,
there's a 5 minute preview with an advisor at about 1h 09m
and a more in depth exploration and interview with family members at just before 2h 17m on the link here http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/social/4421777#r7215216
Cool, thanks for the update
This is just like when Danny Concannan broke the story of Bartlet ordering the
assassination of the Qumari defence minister. He emerged from that unscathed and I believe everyone involved in this story will too.
Confirmation of what everybody expected really.
I dont think anyone here expected that there would be a full public inquiry while a Conservative government was in place. The full extent of collusion in various other murders will never be discovered imo.
The timing could be a little better. Tensions are already high at the minute following the "peaceful" protests of the past week or so. There are more planned for this evening in various parts of Belfast. The schdule released at the start of the week stated there were 4 planned for today. This number has jumped up to 10 in the last hour or two, including a few at flashpoint areas where no protest was planned previously. Make of that what you will.
A larger PSNI presence at these flashpoint areas, along with the ongoing dispute regarding ex RUC officers being re-recruited by the PSNI, could lead to a spot of bother later. I have to walk through on of these areas so fingers crossed it passes off quietly.
fingers crossed
hope it all passes off without incident
by the way
I would have thought today's events re: the review statement would have dampened the Loyalist ire ... is that not the case?
You would imagine that to be the case, but unfortunately it isn't.
Most loyalists would regard the Finucane murder as being justified, due to his close ties with various republican groups. In fact, I would imagine most loyalists believe Pat Finucane was an IRA member himself.
When I mentioned in the previous post about the timing being bad, I meant that the report could cause raise tensions in republican areas. Especially those in flashpoint areas where the flag protests are taking place. Basically, loyalist protesters, plus a PSNI presence, blocking roads and generally causing problems in a largely republican area, could lead to something kicking off quite easily.
Everything seems to have passed peacefully so far though.
This month is one of the few times since moving home that I don't miss living in Belfast
Heading up on Saturday though, hope I don't get rioted on.
City center/ South Belfast should be fine.
A few lads I work with are of the opinion that "East Belfast is going to burn" on Friday night.
Centre and south are my only stomping grounds
Should be fine then. They haven't been burning Shaftesbury Square again since have they?
Nothing since.
The weekend is coming though.
Some Tory twat on the radio
criticising the family for criticising the review
"they must be very fast readers"
twat
Any evidence that Finucane was an IRA member?
Or did he just provide legal support?
No evidence, just speculation.
A former IRA member turned informant called Sean O'Callaghan claimed that Finucane was was a high ranking member, but this has been disputed by most people who would have knowledge of this. The RUC states that he was not a member.
He was a just solicitor who specialized in human rights cases, of which there were plenty at that time in N.Ireland.
