Thursday Gaming Thread
Alternatively a documentation of my unemployment,
Been playing Far Cry 3 a bit, it's a bit easy. And you get everything really quickly. Quite fun but could use more challenge and 'progression' (I bought all the guns I wanted in about 2 hours?!).
Also quicktime events have never and will never be a good idea and why are they everywhere mashing ONE BUTTON is not a REPLACEMENT FOR A PROPER FIGHT.
I'll spare any more ranting, what have you lot been playing?
On another note I've been playing Kerbal Space Program a lot which just recently got a shiny new update that lets you put space stations into orbit and send off unmanned probes around the whole miniature solar system and it's all eased along by a wonderful navigational node system that's been implemented in the same update. You should take a look if you're interested in space games, sandbox games, flight sims, puzzle games or whatever. It's fun, but there's a bit of a knack to it since it uses fairly accurate space physics. I like it a lot.

has there ever been a good quicktime event in any game ever?
i can't think of one but i feel like it must have been done well at least once
Resident Evil 4 maybe?
no
that would be a quicktime event in a good game.
they were alright I thought
I'm not sure there's examples of 'oh man, that QT was amazing' but there's certainly a few out there which are perfectly suitable and not hate-inducing that serve the game pretty well.
seem to remember some okay ones in Bayonetta
though I might be imagining that...
I don't mind quick times in boss battles as interludes between the fighting
like in God of War or the new Castlevania. But the whole press X not to die quicktimes (like Resi 4) are well annoying.
It really is just lazy programming
Either give me a cutscene or let me play. The bullshit half way house that is the QTE is no fun for anybody.
They can work really well for occasional quick reaction jump scares in certain games
If you don't know they're coming they can be a great mechanic for generating that little bit of extra panic and nervousness to add to the overall atmosphere.
The problem is that they've become far too commonplace and massively overused both in games in general and in individual titles.
my personal favorite is the stealth kills in Prince of Persia: Two Thrones
After suffering through hours of hack-n-slash in Warrior Within, the devs added a sensible way to use the dagger to make a lot of the combat faster, if you were sneaky and quick on the draw. The trick was that each kill included up to 5 or 6 timed presses so you still felt in control.
Unfortunately, this extended to the boss fights as well, making a few of them really formulaic and boring (not all - some were still quite intense, including the final one).
The bit where a kid kicks a football at you in Shenmue
hey, Annt
just out of curiosity, what's the lowest player rating you've seen on FM?
Chelsea beat Fulham 9-0 in the league cup on my FM12 game, and one of the Fulham CB's had a 3.6 (didn't get subbed until, like, 80 mins!) and i though woah that's low.
I've seen a keeper have a 2.7 before
I can't remember if that was in a released version or in the dev cycle though
woah
that's even lower!!!
Asura's Wrath
has the best use of QTEs ever.
Despite not liking the demo at all I'm really enjoying Forza Horizon
getting quite obsessed with driving all the roads, smashing all the barriers, finding the barns, etc in the same was as I did in Burnout Paradise.
Only done a small chunk of the actual races so far as I've spent a fair bit of time exploring and doing the random challenges.
Great game which probably in some ways hasn't been helped by carrying the Forza brand, I think they could have done a better job of identifying this as a complimentary parallel series to Motorsport.
I might buy a new 360 game to play when I go to my mother's over Christmas
what should I get? basically, I only have three games for my 360, to summarise
GTA4 (really liked - fairly simple to play, lots of action, pretty fast paced)
Red Dead Redemption (as above)
Fallout New Vegas (didn't like, too complex, really easy to die)
I think because I missed about three generations of consoles I can't really cope with big modern games. RECOMMEND ME SOMETHING or I'll just go buy LA Noire b/c I feel pretty safe with Rockstar stuff but I hear that isn't that good.
(Oh and I already have the RDR/GTA4 expansions)
LA Noire's alright
buy rayman origins.
just buy it.
right now.
It's pretty hard to argue with ^this
it's also very cheap
Maybe some similar sandboxish stuff
like Just Cause 2 or Sleeping Dogs or Saints Row might work?
Or just get Batman. You can probably get Asylum and City for pretty cheap. Both are great and neither is too complicated.
^this to either of the Arkham games
Actiony, stealthy, puzzly, goody.
buy orange box off indieandyjones
thanks for the suggestions guys
I've bookmarked this for when I go out shopping after my exams :)
SKYRIM
FUS RO DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
I did think about that
but I'm not a big fan of fantasy and I was worried it'd be crazy complex and I'd have to learn to make swords and worry about levelling up and learning skills and shit
there's actually less of the worrying about levelling in Skyrim, i found
as in, it's not anywhere near as easy as Oblivion to break the game in
it's mega-awesome though
alternatively: just play more Sim City 4
batman
arkham asylum or city
probs start with asylum as it'll be well cheap by now
oops
Vice City is on ios today for £2.99
Oooh good shout x
Far Cry does get a bit easy
I believe you unlock better guns as the game progresses. Have you tried bumping the difficulty up a notch? I believe you can do that mid-game. Thinking of doing that myself.
I’m really enjoying it personally. Though it does feel like two games: the sandbox and the main quest. The former of which is much, much better than the latter. I love scoping out command posts and coming up with plans of attack, preferably involving as much fire, bear/tiger and ill-advised hang glider action as possible.
I've only purchased two guns on Far Cry, you unlock them for free by doing the radio towers.
I think there is a difficulty spike at the ganja mission, overall though it's not insanely hard. I'm happy with that.
All about hang gliders.
I've just started to do a bit more of the main missions
just about to do the prison break in. I could do with it being just a bit more tricky: though I'm planning these assaults I'm fairly confident I can take on anything with a shitload of health syringes and a fully loaded shotgun.
I only paid money for said shotgun and the flamethrower. Because I really wanted a flamethrower.
I paid for the magnum and the bolt action sniper. I think we shows how we play haha!
I've been taking more of the out posts when I'm playing it. I've been a bit distracted by Skyrim the last few days though.
I bought the grenade launcher
Don't buy it if you want any semblance of 'challenge' to remain in the game. Major design flaw with the launcher is that enemies tend to reinforce in packed out boats and jeeps which are conveniently easy to hit with explosives.
Also explosions set things on fire :D
Have you tried bumping it up to warrior yet?
It's not much more difficult but it's challenging enough to feel satisfying again. And the wildlife (tigers in particular) take off a lot more damage, meaning the jungle is a bit more intimidating a place. As it should be.
does anyone want to buy any of my games? all xbox 360
I've sold a few on ebay recently but they won't let me put any more up for another month.
From what i can remember, I've got:
- F1 2010
- Bioshock
- Fallout 3
- Arkham Asylum
- Orange Box (Half Life 2, Portal etc)
- Fable 2
- GTA 4
- Modern Warfare 1 and 2
£8 including postage will make me happy. PM me to let the bidding war begin!
I really want Far Cry 3. Where has it cheapest?
Saw it for £42 in town! £42! Madness.
I paid 45 quid at GAME. :'(
Amazing game.
bloody better be for £45!
Not sure if the link works but

XCOM!!
finally got it, not got this attached to game characters for a long time. When Abel Xaviers blonde barnet hit the floor last night i nearly cried.
I sucked hard at the start but am slowly getting my footing, not had too much time to get that far unfortunately
Fingers crossed for Farcry 3 to see some nice Christmas sales action

Not my fault the message boards have shit software
Valve working on a new game engine apparently!
I hope this means they've been working on it for a while already
because they're taking their damn time.

Top tip
ai carumba!
that's my week off sorted
Finished Hitman Absolution earlier
it's good, not sure if it's better than blood money though, it looks better, and the walking animations are a load better, but there's some annoying linear bits, and the story seems a bit pointless, it doesn't need a story, just send me to cool places to dress up as something silly and have someone killed in an elaborate accident, we don't need a story to go with it. There's still plenty of the dressing up and elaborate accidents though, so it's fine. The gameplay is good, all the stealthy stuff feels very natural and the cover system is good, instinct works well, and is optional/nerfable, and the disguises don't work so flawlessly anymore, which is nice, (security guards will see through your security guard disguise, instinct can prevent it) but can get annoying. Not tried contracts mode yet, gonna give it a whirl tomorrow.
I thought the story was fine and didnt zone out during it
the main thing was though that i found the locales it took you to to be quite good. Anywhere with crowds was always cool.
The disguises were sometimes annoying, like if you dress as a street vendor suddenly every street vendor in the area knows you're an imposter, i get why its like that, just felt kind of annoying. It is quite excint though walking straight in the front door of places in disguise and using instinct to just walk past everyone hoping it lasts enough time so you can find some cover.
The main thing i felt though is its a game you can get get more out of the more you put in. Like you could just take the easy option every mission but if you look for the really complex assassinations or escape/entrance routes there was a lot more satisfaction.
excint = exciting
I like the whole groundhog day thing the hitman games have going on
and the disguises are a trade off, it'd be far too easy if they didn't recognise you, there are a few disguises with only 1 or 2 of them in the level though, so you're sorted if you find a good one of them (judge, mascot, agency scientist). A map of the levels would be nice too, I usually find myself wandering through the first playthrough of a level shooting everyone I can see and working out where things are before restarting.
been playing endless space a lot
it's a bit like Alpha cCnturi I suppose except predominantly set in space, started off as quite complex but after setting up a couple of colonies I'm getting quite into it. I still need to find a way to deal with my AI opponents defender ships though.
Both Faster Than Light and Hotline Miami are 40% on steam this weekend
I'd already got the latter and now I've picked up the former. Between these and Far Cry I've got a busy weekend ahead.
Oh no, wait, my girlfriend is coming up tomorrow. Fucksticks.
I've got xcom all lined up for when I break up from school
I've never played a strategy game before, massive noob...
Has anyone got any advice for the settings I should use to best enjoy it. Have heard lots bandied about with terms like 'ironman' but have no idea what it all means...
Ironman is hardcore one-save no do-overs
so if someone dies, they stay dead. This will be traumatic, but it's sorta meant to be. But it's optional.
Even as a strategy noob Normal shouldn't be too tricky for you. You may lose a few countries on the way but you'll get the hang of it. And you can always start over on easy if you're struggling.
Thanks 'horse
will give it a go on normal!
Do ironman on normal setting
ironman makes the game way way way more tense
oh shit, there's a new XCOM game?
so buying that
Where the fuck you been?
It's been gushed over pretty much ever week.... and speaking of which
FUCKKKKKk :( my A Squad just got taken out after 15hours of play... time to restart again.
i love kerbal
this christmas im going to give it some proper attention, hopefully get a mission to jool completed,
how are you finding the space-station stuff btw?, i havent tried that yet
The spacesations are great
makes interplanetary missions easier too, since you can assemble larger ships in orbit. Only issue I have with it is that docking is fiddly, and you almost are required to have SAS on any ship you're trying to dock. But that's to be expected I guess.
I've got a very lovely space station coming together now.
Man, Bioshock Infinite is sounding pretty awesome
http://kotaku.com/5966500/ive-played-4-12-hours-of-bioshock-infinite-im-no-longer-worried-about-this-game
Just bought Journey
So, that's my weekend planned.
http://www.skrillexquest.com/
My local Morrisons were clearing out their stock today
I picked up F1 2011, Brave, UFC trainer and Rugby World Cup 2011 on Xbox and Cars 2 and Rugby World Cup 2011 on PS3 for 98p each. I don't even have a PS3 but figure I can get a fair bit more than that trading them in or selling them on eBay. Madness
traded in Brave, UFC Trainer, Cars 2 and RWC on PS3 for £30
Picked up Sleeping dogs and a couple of blu rays and I'll keep F1 2011 on xbox. As long as I can sell RWC on Xbox on eBay for more than £5.88 I'm in profit too
Steam Box is definitely going to happen
currently being designed as a living room pc solution
Warning: don't start the new Skyrim content untill you've completed the main game quest
It'll piss you off.
This whole DLC stuff makes me REALLY RESENT MY FUCKING PS3
It's the future
games are more like 'platforms' these days, the foundations for a series of games. Borderlands has really got it down to a fine art but Skyrim has been pretty shit at it
I think for games like Skyrim it's OK, it's been happening for years.
..they were called add-on packs. Dragonborn is like 30 hours, I don't spending 15 quid on 30 hours of game play.
I like the idea
And would fuck the Skyrim disc if the hole were bigger
And love DLC extras
But I have a PS3. BETHESDA HATES MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
I didn't like the Dawnguard dlc that much.
definitely definitely didn't enjoy the missions as much as the majority of the main quests.
I already prefer it to Dawnguard and I'm not done with it.
Has anyone got FIFA 13 for their iPhone?
Flipping well addictive game. Some of the default assumptions are pretty funny though. Like Newcastle being the best team.
I've not been keeping an eye out for posts on this, but has anyone played Dishonored yet?
I didn't realise that this looks so good - also didn't realise that it was made by Bethesda..
I thought it was good, not amazing.
Worth playing though.
Cheers, I think I may well purchase.
So Fifa's scripted.
or at least Ultimate Team definitely is. EA trying to cover it up but it's so obvious.
