Do we need a Wednesday Football Thread thread?
I'm mostly starting one because I want to know who has the screening rights to the World Club Cup in the UK and my Google searches have been fruitless. Anyone know? Who has had them in previous years?
Arsenal lose but creep through one of the weaker groups in second position, seemingly destined to draw Barca a-fucking-gain, City successfully finish bottom of their group, Chelsea look set to be the first CL-era holders to exit at the first hurdle (somewhat interestingly, probably with more points than Arsenal qualified with. Hmmm) and Man Utd have Cluj in a game that means nowt to them.
Transfer rumours are starting to hot up. That'll be fun, eh?

Yes
No
wouldn't have thought so
I like Tomas Rosicky
he'd make a great footballer
did you like it when busted an absolute gut to catch through-on-goal Michu on Saturday
and having caught up with him just stood to the side and let him take the shot with no pressure?
Yep
To be fair to him, if he'd carried on steaming in then Michu would have turned him and all he'd have done would have been to unsight Szxcvbnm. Michu went near post, so it was all academic anyway. Well done to Tomas for trying to get back, I say.
Bollocks to that
You have to put him under pressure, not stand in his way of punting it out for a throw on the far side of the pitch.
not as if he gets any example from our 'defence'
Pffft
He didn't get back in time to put him under pressure, really can't see how he's at fault in any way for that goal. If he'd been in position to get there half a second earlier then he could have put him under pressure, but he wasn't. Bless him for trying to sprint half the pitch and stop a goal.
yeah it'd be hard to say the goal was his fault given the ground he made up to cover
but still, if you're gonna make the ground up, make a challenge, or at least ask yourself "WWJTD?"
:D classic arsenal.
I have a vague recollection of the World Club Cup being shown on Channel 5.
Could be thinking of something else though.
Fort Boyard
:D
Sounds like Mourinho's on the brink at Madrid.
Might just be him and his chairman willy-waving via the press, but Marca (who are drip-fed their stories from within Madrid) are saying he's a gonner. End of the season if they progress right to the latter stages of the Champions League, possibly before if they exit it at any point.
They'd be pretty naive to sack him when Chelsea or PSG would give them £15m for him in the summer, no questions asked, though it sounds like he's been acting pretty strangely of late, and the Madrid supporters have never completely taken to him, have they?
Don't have much time for the Spanish varation on vulgarball
so have only seen Real in the CL this season. What's been up with them? Have they been particularly poor?
They're 11 points behind Barca after 14 games...
and behind city rivals Atletico, as well.
Apparently, he's not happy with the club paying big bucks for mediocre players over his head (Modric), and he's told the board he wants complete control of the reserve teams, something they're dead against given the entire philosophy of the club is to churn out players who are good enough to play for 90% of other clubs for alright money, not necessarily to supply the first team itself.
Quite a bit of booing at games, apparently. Ticket sales dropping. Ronaldo still not happy (with the club, not Mourinho). Yesterday he asked the fans do boo him before the game and spent 15 minutes in the middle of the pitch an hour before kick-off encouraging it. He's never been popular with senior Madrid players either, apparently, though to be honest the press say that about most managers at big clubs.
* Apparently.
Hats off - I had no idea this was all an elaborate set up to goad Zaptsa
:D
He asked the fans to get any whistling out of the way
before the Madrid derby, certainly, 50 minutes before. He didn't do that last night too did he?
The ticket sales thing is a fairly moot point though i would think as the Spanish economy is in such shit that ticket sales are falling everywhere
playing modric over ozil isn't working very well.
i'm no expert but modric played last night and from the reports i read played great
set up a couple of goals and the team won 4-1, how is that not working well?
Ozil's got 100 assists in 4.5 seasons.
Modric isn't in his league.
probably not but i was just making a case against the original point
and the game last night when Modric played ahead of Ozil and it clearly had little to no effect on the overall team performance as they won 4-1, i'm not saying Modric is better than Ozil because he isn't but equally Modric is still a very fine player and Real Madrid can clearly function very well when he plays ahead of Ozil
Modric was good last night
by the looks of it. But hasn't been getting the nod over Ozil in league (Madrid derby for example.)
el balón grosero
Think there's a decision on the ownership of the Olympic Stadium (again) today
Presumably it'll follow the previous two announcements with West Ham getting the nod before the whole thing collapses under the weight of legal challenges, spying and EU law.
Really quite nervous/excited about Celtic v Spartak tonight.
Considering just how important even qualifying for the Champions League was this season, to get out of the group stage would be huge.
i reckon we'll draw and Barca's b team will hopefully do us a favour against Benfica
Luton 3 - 1 Dorchester
Knocked out of another cup last night by Luton. Again.
Bumholes. Gaping ones.
rooney starting tonight
i can only imagine fergie wants him to pick up a slight injury so he has no choice but to play giggs, scholes and fletcher.
Guess he needs some match fitness, I'd be surprised if he plays the whole 90 minutes.
guessing Fergie knows what he is doing seeing as he is an absolute legend
guessing he wants Rooney to maintain his goalscoring form the weekend, and then bring that to the Manchester derby? Sounds like a good plan to me
more like match FATness hahaha
forgot to log in as cat_race?
Think there's a decent chance chelsea will qualify tonight
Being based on two games where one team is the massive favourite and the other game in which shakhtar should be the strong favourite
spartak v juve will be a draw
and thus chelsea are fucked
Eurgh spartak, shakthar, what's the difference
everyone's saying this, but shakhtar will want to win
to make sure they finish top - likewise juve. they could both play it safe, but shakhtar especially have nothing to lose by going for the 3 points
on paper you'd fancy shakhtar to beat juve at home anyway
Yeah.
I've got a feeling Shakhtar won't be playing for a draw and Chelsea will somehow squeeze through.
Kinda agree.
Shakhtar have been far and away the best team in this group and were very unlucky to not win in Juventus. They were bloody robbed at Stamford Bridge, and not just of a point. They'd be right up there if their keeper wasn't so shit. They don't really need to rest players or take it easy and, with the greatest respect, they've got a fair few players who want to attract attention.
Not convinced they will win, but they're more than capable and it wouldn't surprise me if they did. And they Chelsea conceded a last minute equaliser.
Olympic Stadium slips pre-engagement ring on West Ham's grubby finger
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2243337/West-Ham-handed-Olympic-Stadium.html
Looking forward to the informed, financially literate comments that will populate the foot of the article by the end of the day
Fancy Shakhtar to win comfortably tonight
They'll want to guarantee top spot, they're great at home etc. Good odds too for those gamblers amongst us.
predictions for tonight
chelsea will go through
celtic wont
I predict the opposite of this.
in a bit
according to Martin Samuel
Joey Barton should come out.

martin samuel is a cunt
chelsea are running these players into the ground, maaaaaan
;-D
Just seen Barca's team.
Celtic are going to get stitched up here.
nah, messi will come on after 60 mins and get a hat-trick
Celtic
:D
juve looking pretty good so far
barca's reserves not so much
GIVE ALL THE PENALTIES
MISS ALL THE PENALTIES
:D
this is just silly
Uh oh spaghettios
another central midfielder injured
brill.
Broken record, mate.
Backup player.
Dead rubber.
who got injured? cleverley?
bollocks. it actually is going to be giggsy and scholesy against City, isn't it? :(
Torres wooooo
This united team will take some stopping
Goodness me, this Chelsea game's turning into a bit of a rout isn't it?
PEN CELTIC
2-1!
Pen hit the underside of the bar, but it's a goal.
Amazing :D
Is the place to discuss Stuart Hall being charged with noncing?
Sad times.

Messi stretchered off...
yup, looks like the record won't be beaten
;-D ;-D ;-D
71,521 at Old Trafford tonight, apparently.
Heh.
No chance looking at the TV screens
On a general note, I love the way foreign teams play football. Even though they lost to Celtic, the way teams like Spartak knock the ball around is awesome.
Just checked the final tables
Seems like City only got 3 points.
You could've easily said this from your 'littlebirds' account, boss!
Wow...who'd have thunk it'd be down to Celtic
to drag British football back from the City-inspired low of yesterday. Remarkable stuff.
;-D
Congraulations, mate. Chuffed for you.
It's not every day that one of your four teams achieves something!
It really is remarkable though...
I mean 9 points...that's pretty much the sum of City's CL history...(not quite as many as Spurs' maiden CL season mind...)
;-D
Still trying to make Spurs sound relevant, i see.
Keep fighting the good fight, big man.
Anyway, what you doing here?
Aren't Jossies Giants playing tonight or something??
Really pleased for Celtic
Same.
Just hope they avoid United - a) because i'd like to see them make it through the second round, and b) because it'd be fucking boring.
They'd probably do Arsenal over two legs, mind.
well played Celtic
Haha, chelsea. Wonder if they'll play with that shiny monstrosity on thursdays
Best result of all 6 for juventus tonight, deserved to be top. Disappointed to see shakhtar finish second but hopefully they can knock man utd out in the next round
Pleased for Celtic, but realistically can't see them beating any teams that finish top
Worried about Messi, would be gutted if he misses the rest of 2012 and doesn't beat that record. Very tough match for barca without him on saturday
When's the draw for the next round?
20th
Chelsea vs Tottenham Europa League final would be lovely
Ps: does this mean Chelsea fans will stop singing THAT fucking song?
Mate, we've got Torres and Benitez.
Practically obliged to sing endlessly about distant glories.
So happy about Celtic.
Realistically, we know anything from here on is a bonus, so we might as well enjoy it.
Still, think we could maybe pull off a shock in the next round with a bit of luck.
Celtic can win the champions league
Not sure what was more exciting : the match or cycling home from the Yucatan Bar after 5 pints and no dinner.
Kris Commons' dead leg
After CM01/02 hero Kim Kallstrom's challenge on him tonight:
http://pics.lockerz.com/s/266701376
Ouch
fucking hell
how is that even possible?
he's been an essential purchase in every CM/FM since time began
he'll walk it off
Is the English premier league going down the shitter?
Certainly looks like it.
Of all the potential last 16 opponents for Celtic
I think the easiest would be United. I'm not entirely sure why, perhaps because of having a better head-2-head last time.
Put it this way
I really, really doubt there's anyone poorer at the back out of the sides we can draw
Crikey!
