Seven Psychopaths
I watched this last night. It was OK.
It's basically Adaptation. done in the style of In Bruges, but not quite as amazing as that should be, really.
It's like Adaptation in that it's about a film writer struggling with writers block, and then writing a film but trying to avoid cliches and then the film that he's writing is manifested in the film you're watching, all meta. And it's the same star and writer/director and sense of humour and general feel of In Bruges. Just not nearly as good.
It has Christopher Walken doing a very good Christopher Walken-y role, like in True Romance, and Tom Waits is pretty good. Sam Rockwell's maybe not as brilliant as usual, but whatever.
It also has like 3 The Walkmen songs in the soundtrack, which is nice. Well, 2, one twice. Walkmen sounds like Walken. This is probably a coincidence. Also my name's Christopher and one time I played trombone for The Walkmen. I think this is important to note.
Anyway, it's pretty OK, 7/10, pop it on your lovefilm waiting list and enjoy it with a pizza, u no

I was hoping this would be good
it's fine
probably quite rewatchable, in an on-in-the-background kinda way. Christopher Walken really is very good in it and it could end up being quite a cult film maybe idk
Sam Rockwell's a bit of a ham
The way they're marketing this film puts me off it to be honest, was going to wait for some reviews because I thought In Bruges was brilliant. But Christopher Walken is a ham too, and he's long past the point where I expect anything other than a hammy Christopher Walken performance. He nailed self-parody in the early 90s I think, he's moved into phoned-in meta self-parody now.
Moon: not ham
Haven't seen it
He's not the worst ham in the world, but when he gets his whacky on then he's pretty hammy. This looks like a film where he'd be playing a whacky character.
he very much is playing wacky in it
not as ham as iron man, but ham. ok though.
and walken is super ham, but really, really good
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind: not ham
I'm planning on seeing this at the weekend.
I haven't seen In Bruges. Is it a sequel, or just all the same people? Do I need to watch In Bruges to properly understand Seven Psychopaths?
Your help is appreciated.
not a sequel at all
just a retread
would recommend you see adaptation. probably immediately after
a) because it's amazing
b) because it's similar
to be honest i might have liked SP less because it does such similar things to adaptation but to a much less dramatic extent
If it's on LoveFilm, it'll go on the list.
In Bruges is great
You should watch that anyway
also, it has a LoLmEtA bit where they talk about female characters being poorly treated in genre films
whilst the film fails the bechdel test.
should films deliberately pass the bechdel test? i slightly think maybe yes, possibly.
whats the bechdel test then
it's a plain white sauce
oh ok
bechdel test:
film passes if it has two female characters have a conversation that a)is actually part of the story (rather than background chit chat or someone saying hi or thanks to a waitress or whatever) and b) isn't about a man.
isn't a lot to ask, but a very very very small percentage of films pass it
htat's quite interesting actually
that's why i mention it
i'm in interesting guy
yeah DiS often fails it too, as I've pointed out
Persona fails the inverse Bechdel, bigoted dreck innit
Another test most films fail: the 'is a gun brandished' test
don't quite get you
Persona?
done some research
apparently about half of films pass it, according to some anecdotal evidence on wiki, but i've heard worse things.
still a good test
bit mental that only half of films have a scene where two women are conversing about something other than men, but i guess beign a film director is quite a macho thing
there are of course completely unsexist films that fail it
and completely sexist films that pass it (Suckerpunch)
Yeah I mean it'd be ridiculous to force screenwriters
to include a scene with two women talking about something unrelated to a man if it doesn't fit in to the narrative and would just be there for box-ticking purposes. There's loads of films where it just wouldn't make any sense.
I LOVE Sam Rockwell.
So I might see this.
have we all seen The guard?
Cause that's kinda the same humour as in bruges but also directed by the same guys brother. And a calexico OST.
We have? Oh. Fair enough.
I think Seven Psychopaths is the first time I've heard a film described as 'tarantinoesque' and still wanted to see it.
oh yeah, forgot to mention (aside from True Romance ref):
it's very tarantino-esque. compares pretty badly to most tarantino, though
taht said, in bruges was pretty tarantino, and amazing
and ive not seen the guard yet
sadly
You should, it is really good.
tbf
i don't think tarantino's doing tarantino that well these days
i liked inglorious bumherds quite a lot
i couldnt really be arsed with it
all seemed quite daft, and not in the lovable way that some of his other stuff is, more in a self parodic way
I gave this another watch recently after being seriously underwhelmed
when it was first released, and it's alright really.
Not great, but certainly watchable.
The Guard is great
Much better than In Bruges which I didn't enjoy at all tbh
I read all the hype about In Bruges before seeing it
and i think this hampered my enjoyment of it a fair bit.
It was interesting and an understated character study, and I quite like those kind of films, but all the 'ITS TEH BESTEST THING EVAR!!!!!!!!" chat built it up more than it could carry under it's own weight.
The Guard is great.
Watching it I sort of had a feeling it might not really take off outside of Ireland, so I'm really glad it did.
I enjoyed it
But then I've never seen Adaptation or In Bruges so can't really compare. There was a good atmosphere in the cinema, most people were really into it
Oh, Sam <3

Seven Cycle Paths?
But Christopher's Walken!
I quite like this.
i really enjoyed it
and certainly would recommend people see it. not as good as in bruges, but then not a lot is.
just watched this
I'm not sure if I disliked it just because it wasn't as good as I wanted it to be, or because it just wasn't very good.
either way, bit disappointing
I thought it was a mess
but it was funny and good fun regardless, but yes no In Bruges or really close
Worth it for Rockwell's description of the final shoot-out imo
