2 pint carry out
how long has this been a thing. a friend has been claiming that at the end of the night his pub can pour two pints into a waxed cardboard container (similar to one that might hold noodles or other chinese takeaway but bigger) and then he can just take it with him on his way and he drinks his giant two pint drink in the street.

Carry-outs have been going on for ages
but why would you bother? there are shitloads of places you can buy alcohol from these days - you don't need the pub equivalent of a doggie bag to do this.
when people have said carry out i always thought they meant like, buying a bottle of wine to take with you
2 pints all in one go out of waxy cardboard? that sounds well shit
Not sure why you'd want that.
If the pub is closing and you haven't had enough to drink, go somewhere else.
If the pub is closing and you have had enough, go home with some water.
the story was regaled to me as thus is
mate and his brother (also a mate really, so, 2 mates) went into this pub and ordered beers and sat and drank for a while after a bit it became apparent that the pub was closed except for some meeting group for victims of domestic abuse. in a kindly act the pub offered 2mates a free take out to usher them away. 2mates got confused thinking the pub would still be open and asked if they were still able to buy a couple of pints on top of their free carry out pints and the bar staff, unsure how to handle 2 adult males refusing to leave a meeting for victims of domestic violence, sold them a couple more pints on top of the carry out pints they had been given for free. so then they sat and drank the pints they had bought (all the while eyeing up the buffet that had been put on for the meeting group) until they had finished and then took their take out pints with them. from there they went to a different pub bought a pint each and drank those, still just having these take out pints with them on the table. new pints finished, 2mates part a) started to pour some of his take out into his empty pint glass. bar man at new pub asked him where he had got it. 2mates part a), thinking he was just curious about the existence of the waxy cardboard take out thing told him they got it next door. bar man kicked off and they left.
now this thread exists
what
Your mate thought it reasonable
to take his own beer into another pub? The barman was absolutely right to kick off....
i'm not disputing that, i'm just laying out the facts
i find it most bizarre he took take out from one pub into a different pub and then bought beer. they drank 2 beers all while they had this takeaway beer with them.
Once I seen someone fall backwards down some stairs with one of these
He screamed "BEER!" as it flew out of his hand and smashed against the floor. It was majestic.
ha, good
wo
i'm giggling myself silly about this :D
There is a pub in Exeter called the Great Western next to the train station
that me and a friend would always go to to get a carry out of ale from before taking a long train journey.
One time we went and the normal bloke wasn't there, and instead it was a Polish girl. When my mate, in his thick Cornish Accent, asked for a Carry out, she thought he meant "Curry Out" and was indicating that he wanted some of the Pub's curry put into a milk carton for a train journey.
did she comply?
We giggled about our mistake
And I enjoyed my two pints of lukewarm tikka on the train
amazing
How desperate do you have to be to get one of these?
oh no, pub's closing - fill up this Morrison's plastic bag full of ale for me barkeep
honestly i didn't even know it was a thing until 2 days ago
i just have such a good image of people staggering around drinking flat lager out of cardboard boxes
This is good in pubs where they have a wide range of good beer that you can't get draft in any old place
I've worked in 3 pubs
first i've ever heard of it.
Check out Tom Cruise from Cocktail here lads
I don't think this is 'OMG we need to keep drinking thing',
the only places I've seen it are real ale pubs which allow you to buy ales to take home with you - same as a lot of ale festivals do.
The waxy-cardboard bottles (like the tall orange juice cartons you get) are fine but a but prone to leaking, they used to just do plastic milk bottle type containers which were a lot better.
^ knows
I've only ever been offered one if the pub's closing and someone in my group has a substantial amount left in their glass.
Can't think why it'd be much use any other time.
hey i walked past pie the other day
it looked good. i want to go eat a pie there. do you want to go?
Yes
No
Also, I'm pretty sure most pubs don't do this,
because they're not licensed for it - they have a licence that lets you drink on the premises, not an off-licence (like offies) which allows you to buy the alcohol to drink off the premises.
i was under the impression that all on-licenses included an off-license
which is why it's ok to buy wine or whatever from a pub to take home with you
not all of them
brewdog camden only get their offie licence a few months ago i think.
Whatever happened to post pub buying 5 cans of strong polish lager from the all night offie
Taking 3 sips and passing out on the sofa before waking up at 7am with your cat licking the remnants of fried chicken you don't recall buying off your face?
Have never ever seen or heard of this.
Yup, came across this recently.

It's all fine for the LondonMetropolitanElite with their shops open after the pubs close but out in the sticks this is the only way to carry on drinking after closing time if you haven't the foresight to stock up before hand.
If you fill them up with the fizzy stuff you get half of it oozing out of the top on the way home and the permanent fear that the cardboard container will fall apart at any minute.
PICTORIAL EVIDENCE
still intend to live my life like this is some nonsense you invented on DiS
and not a thing
PICTORIAL EVIDENCE
photoshopped
talk to goodo about that
actually they do just look like milk box
My local offie
does this with a very small local brewery that only sells their ale in this place. Is a bit much to be honest, but the occasional treat is alright.
got the thread title in my head to the tune of Brown Girl In The Ring
This is a bit of a tradition isn't it...
Back up to 20/30 years ago, most pubs in most English (licensing laws might be different in Scotland) towns/villages closed at 11pm and there weren't as many off-licenses as there are now. Therefore buying a couple of pints to take home when you left the pub was pretty common.
Still probably pretty common outside big towns and cities.
