Was there a gaming thread?
If so I missed it.
Currently playing (for Savage Pixels review):
Family Guy: Back to the Multiverse... Not as awful as the most damning reviews have made out, but not as 'average' as the 6/10 (!) IGN slapped on it. Repetitive, crass... Yet oddly compelling, as in I've spent the last two evenings on it.
Epic Mickey 2... Retains the annoying camera of the first game, which makes some parts of co-op play a total nightmare; but it's a very pretty game indeed, and there are loads of side-quests to get stuck into...
Black Ops 2... Keep dipping back into this but honestly it's more out of a sense of duty (oh ha ha) than anything else... Do feel I've seen enough of it tho, and haven't finished the campaign yet... Little enthusiasm to do so.
Also been at: iOS Pitfall (free); old PS2 games - We Love Katamari, Amplitude, Gitaroo Man, Zone of the Enders; and had a bash at Tetrisphere today, which I bought for a couple of quid.

i'm still enjoying black ops
haven't started the campaign
if anyone fancies a game on xbox
send me a pm
Completed halo 4
Pretty disappointing, think I'm done with that franchise now.
I enjoyed the campaign but the ending was dung
Online multiplayer is great
I'm stilling playing skyrim
Mass Effect 3
Enjoying it, still; though I can't get over the fact that I wish it was a bit better structured: it seems like you're either in a situation where there's near-constant combat, or near-constant talking without so much of a seam.
I'm really getting into it, though, now. And frankly, the stuff I say out loud while playing it is pretty damn hilarious.
I'm still waiting for a 'Game of the Year Edition' for Mass Effect 3
with all of the extra downloadable missions that were apparently a pretty big chunk of the story..
It might at least explain the horrible explosion of shit that was the ending
Rather let down by that, the rest of the game was alright (not great though, could have been better, what the bloody hell was with that ridiculous ninja antagononist?!).
Trying to beat Whizpig on Diddy Kong Racing 64
beat him before when I was about 11. Can't quite figure out how to do it.
fucking whizpig!
I did it..
by accidentally crashing into him which caused him to crash into the wall where he remained trapped for the rest of the track. Now on Wizpig 2 which I don't think I got round to completing before.
Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition was out yesterday.
Apparently the release was a bit botched - might be worth waiting a week or two.
Big fan of the series though so it's downloading (very slowly) as we speak
forgot about this
just in time to mean I do no work for my exams
Absolutely adoring Borderlands 2
playing multiplayer and single player already put about 7 hours into it.
Love Mark Of The Ninja, very satisfying
Love Chivalry, once you get into a fight to the death with you and 2 enemies, parry them off and kill them both after a hard fought sword fight is a thing of beauty
I'd love a single player version of Chivalry.
Got Sega Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed this week
but sat down to give it a go the other night and was halted by an update that ended up taking 2 hours. :(
Just finished black mesa
absolutely amazing. so tightly scripted and linear but on a fast pc it's unmissable, even on my sluggish jerky laptop it's an incredible experience, even for those who caned HL to the death. Hoping for a Xen patch soon and then maybe a Blue Shift add on in '13. About to play HL2 again, see if it stacks up, not sure it will though, dunno if it's got the same frenetic pace to it, or if the locations can match.... here's hoping though.
Blue Shift was mediocre though
Opposing Force was the crazy great one.
oh yeh, that one
yeah thats the one I mean
It's still just a 14 year old game at heart
And it's so good. Better than the current crop of CoDs and Battlefield knockoffs. Can't wait for their Xen redesign. So much more variety in weapons and locations and enemies, and it gets scripting right rather than leading you through a maze of inconsequential explosions and set pieces.
Didn't like the fact they cut a big chunk out of Surface Tension though, some of the set piese between the HECU and Xen aliens were god in that.
Yeah, it's so introverted in it's scope
compared to something like CoD where you're just handheld from one set piece to the next, tropical locale one minute siberian tundra the next, trigger almost constantly down. HL really feels like you're creeping through the bowels of some colossal military base, maybe spending 30 minutes between pulling the trigger at times. It feels more 'real' than any CoD game could hope to be purely because it's an organic trek through a living breathing facility - as linear as the game is it never feels like it
gaming break whilst i await
delivery of xcom, which broke the <£25 barrier last week, can't wait
eager to pick up farcry 3 but cant really justify it till after christmas...too little time!
I've got a £25 HMV voucher to spend and I fancy something new
I can't decide between Far Cry 3, Dishonored, Halo 4 or maybe Sleeping Dogs. Can't be arsed with Hitman or Assassins Creed as I didn't like any of the previous iterations of those franchises. And I've already got Borderlands 2 and Xcom.
I'd pick up Evo 2013 but that will inevitably plummet in price come January.
Help?
Any of those 4 would be a very good purchase
not sure about HMV's prices though - you can get a Ltd Ed Dishonored in Game for £21.49 this week, and you can pick Sleeping Dogs up for about £20 (I got it in Asda).
If you've got a voucher I'd go with Halo or Far Cry otherwise you're probably just going to be wasting money.
I think Dishonored is £30
and Sleeping Dogs is £25. Halo 4 and Far Cry are most likely £40.
So yeah, at least with Far Cry I'll be able to get my £15 back in trade-in value.
Actually sod it: I just read the Far Cry 3 reviews
and I feel like getting swept up in some hype.
I'm getting Far Cry today, I'm realllllyyy excited to play it. Skyrim with guns.
Also, has anyone traded in games at HMV before? I brought a bunch with me and I was wondering if they take any game/do they give stupidly low trade in prices?
i always feel bad after i trade in
wish i still had some of the games i have traded over the years
Dunno about their trade-in prices
but the actual game prices tend to be higher than most places so I can't imagine it's great value.
Amazon are surprisingly good for trade-ins if you don't mind posting your games off (freepost).
I didn't know they did trade-ins, I might consider that another time.
This time however, I want Far Cry 3 today. I've already got a running dialogue from a friend. 'Makes Halo 4 look like Halo 1, oooo pretty'.
Man, I can still remember being BLOWN AWAY by the graphics on Halo 1
I must be getting old.
Game/Gamestation is probably as good as it's gonna get for immediate trade-ins. I heard Blockbuster are surprisingly good, though I haven't tried them myself.
CEX are usually the best for trade-ins in my experience
it's a tougher job finding anything in there worth trading against though
Ah yeah, I forgot about CEX
No good for day one impulse swapping but better value if you can wait a bit.
don't know why, but there always seems somthing a bit grubby about CEX
It's that cash converters vibe
where you're never sure how much of the stuff is stolen and how much was pawned in desperation to pay off debts/buy more drugs.
I used to trade SNES games in cash converters as a kid though so I'm used to it.
the amount of stock they have of some games practically on day 1 is always a bit disconcerting
and they do seem to have a fair proportion of pretty crappy condition discs
mate
every single one ive been into literally atinks of BO. I usually have to grease out a few bum kievs to freshen the air
The one in Harrow on the Hill we went to as sixth formers
The staff had a full on Diana shrine behind the counter you could see from the shop floor. Was amazing
Yeah I normally go to the one in Camden but I won't make it before they close...
I NEEEEEED IT TONIGHT!
everything you want is in CeX
Especially if you're after 65 copies of fifa '11
So do I!
I loved Halo 1, still one of my favourite games. I have a feeling my mate is a little caught up in the excitement though.
That's good though
I'm totally in the mood for getting swept up in the excitement of a new release. Not even bothered if I decide it's a bit mediocre in a couple of weeks.
I want to punch a shark :D
Can't wait to play the co-op as well, the fact it's meant to be a bit left 4 dead makes me happy.
WWE 13 Attitude Mode is great
A real trip down memory lane
I don't suppose you've heard any more about Prey 2?
I know that you mentioned it some time back.
Surely it'll be the major release (open world wise) next year..
Heard a rumour it'd been canned...
Not GTAV then?
Can't see Prey 2 as being anything special really, they seem to have stripped out everything that made the first one interesting
Can one of you go buy a Wii U and let me know what you think of it please?
Thanks
I got given a bonus this month at work
Sure, the missus is unemployed and we need to renovate half our house. But...
get your priorities sorted!
I know
You're thinking a PS3 right, with the 3 Uncharted games...?
no, I mean hurry up and get that Wii U
I expect a 1,000 summary on my desk first thing Monday morning.
Chop chop!
hem.
http://www.humblebundle.com/
That's a really good bundle
I can tell you this because most of the games are great and I've bought most of them over the years already :| :| :|
thinking of getting 'Hitman: Absolution' for Christmas perhaps
for some festive stealth
normally i achieve that by
crawling around in people's bushes and watching them open their presents, a single tear falling slowly down my cheek
Currently playing the greatest game of all time over here guys

Two lovely spots from Kotaku
The last ever Nintendo Power cover:
http://kotaku.com/5964491/the-last-nintendo-power-cover-is-awesomely-nostalgic?popular=true
Bungie unveiled their new game 3 years ago and we never noticed:
http://kotaku.com/5964560/bungie-might-have-teased-their-next-big-game-way-back-in-halo-3-odst?popular=true
That bungie game looks bloody amazing!
I think the Halo universe could do with a replacement.
Just walked past a Game and had a go on the Wii U
Well, sort of. Spent ages scrolling through all the demos but only Rayman seemed playable. That looked lovely mind even if (as the Wiimotes were out of batteries) it seemed identical to Origins.
Quite a few left. Saw a guy buy one and enough games to part with £700. I briefly contemplated it as I have a free Sunday but looked at the game prices.
I know GAME is always pricey but they were all £45-55. Which I know was normal 10 years ago (I say this as someone who once paid £80 for Time Crisis) but it just seems a bit mental for titles which in some cases are a year old or party games. BUT I know this is the norm at console launch.
Gamepad felt very light and sturdy. Screen seemed to work well when pressed and all the buttons felt good. Did leave kinda wanting one but aware that I have far more worthwhile things to spend cash on than a console that hasn't quite said what it wants to be just yet.
I went with a mate to a midnight launch for the Wii U last night
Was a GAME instead of a GameStation now, interestingly. The controller feels comfortable and light if a bit hollow. I wasn't blown away by the touchscreen, feels a bit like old hat now tablets have matured, and there was a noticeable difference between quality of TV picture and picture in-screen (when you're holding it up to aim) in ZombiU. If you're watching there is the sense that the guy with the controller is having all the fun. ZombiU seems about as interesting as a zombie game could possibly be these days.
thinking about buying a Wii, thoughts?
I've never played an N64 or Gamecube so I feel like I've missed out on a lot of classic Nintendo games, and was wondering what people thought of the selection of games on the Wii. You can pick up a 2nd-hand one for £50 at the moment, which seems decent enough.
Not too bothered if there isn't a huge selection of games as I already have a PS3, it was more about there being at least some top-quality games worthy of my time and money. Opinionate away fellow DiSers!
I would say it's worth it now you can pick one up cheap
and there's a fair few essential games on there - wouldn't have been so keen to recommend it for the first few years of release but the Mario, Zelda, Metroid and Donkey Kong games are all top notch. Plus - whisper it - they're dead easy to crack these days
this is the problem with nintendo
even though there's innovation in the releases they're kinda pathetically stuck in the past. When you're recommending a console based on mario, zelda, metroid & donkey kong it just seems weak. Like recommending vhs+ 'cause of these new dolph lundgren, mel gibson & van damme exclusives they got on it. Get some new shit nintendo
Some good advice here
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/social/4295171
Though since this thread I bought Xenoblade Chronicles and played that for almost a year solid. It's amazing.
i've seen some screenshots, looks completely drool-worthy
If you let us know what kind of games you like
Sure we can help out more.
Completed Dirt 3
Re-playing SSX3 on the Gamecube
A true classic. Also only just picked up Skyward Sword and it is epic
pls support

SOOOO, Far Cry 3 is pretty damn awesome.
Can't put my finger on what makes it not perfect, but it's pretty damn close. I think the problem is I keep comparing it to Skyrim.
I think part of it's not-perfectness is the fact that the main plot and the open world feel like different games
if that makes sense. I'm enjoying wandering around the island liberating command posts and hunting wildlife much more than the story missions. Not that the story missions are bad (I haven't done many tbh) but they seem to ask for things to be done in a certain way. Whereas I'm loving the freedom of scouting out an area and coming up with a plan, which usually starts with stealth and ends with everything on fire and an angry tiger trying rip my throat out.
Also the UI can get to fuck. It keeps on telling you the same things long after you've learnt them in big, annoying letters. Less handholding please!
That might be it!
I like the story missions loads but they feel like bursts of urgency and the world around you is a slower pace. Hunting is great fun, although if you drive/walk down a road it's a constant flow of pirates. Despite that, could be my game of the year. I've unlocked quite a few radio towers but not done many command posts.
The start is bloody intense though, no doubt about that.
Once you do the command posts
the area around it becomes friendly which stems the flow of pirates somewhat, making hunting in the area much easier. They learnt their lesson from Far Cry 2 it seems which was ruined by relentless enemy respawning.
I think I'll do some of them tonight then.
You're right though, they've clearly learnt lots of lessons from Far Cry 2. The bow is my favourite weapon without a doubt, the marksman scope is a bit over intrusive though.
I shall also be hunting sharks with C4 this evening.
C4 shark hunting?
Niiiice. I've only killed one so far by standing precariously on a tiny rock and shotgunning it's face in.
So far I've mostly been using a silenced sniper rifle and a shotgun. I've only just started experimenting with the weapons really. My favourite trick at the moment is throwing a grenade into some long grass, waiting for the pirates to go investigate and then using the flamethrower/molotovs to set fire to said long grass. Cue mass panic.
Awesome!
I love that there is so many things you can do. I was using the bolt action sniper for a while, it's good but I like basically I've become Turok haha.
I've just unlocked the FAMAS style gun as well, it's nice burst fire bad boy. I've popped a short scope and a silencer on it.
Have you done any funny paint jobs yet? I've not had the cash to burn!
I put a paint job on my favoured shotgun (the second one)
though it's just a camo job. I didn't even realise there were further guns to unlock after the bunch you buy at the beginning. Really should do more story missions.
I've not been using machine guns at all (apart from picking up a downed enemy's AK when desperate) as I'm either trying to be stealthy or shotgunning things in a blind panic. A silenced scoped FAMAS sounds incredibly handy though..
It's nice, burst fire is nice as well because ammo isn't exactly abundant!
Shutguns are quite fun, I've rarely used them though. What difficulty are you playing it on? I went for normal.
Normal also
I've been killed a few times so I think I made the right choice. I get the feeling it may get easier once I get tooled up so I might bump it up if I start feeling overpowered.
Not sure if you can bump it up Skyrim style.
I'm gonna stick to normal so I can do another play through. Looking forward to checking out the co-op tonight.
Honestly, it's tough to think of a better game this year.
I'm pretty sure you can
I had a tutorial thingy on 'changing difficulty' pop up last night. Which is odd for an FPS but makes sense given the scope of the game world.
Just found out you can create and play co-op and single player maps.
Which basically makes this game infinite.
http://www.at7addak.com/en/Articles/226503/Preview/PS3/Far-Cry-3-Co-op-and-Map-Editor
You can create co-op maps?!
Oh, now that's something I have to try. Can you use animals in co-op maps? That would be amazing.
Aww, apparently you can't do any form of multiplayer
on created maps with vehicles, wilflife or AI characters. I really hope they patch/DLC that in at some point.
anyone else
get a bit annoyed when you buy a new game then find your housemate always playing it when you're out, having taken it from your room
they're at home a lot more than me so zoom through it, for some reason it really riles me up
been playing HL2 again to see if I was right about it
And yeah, it's a fun action game, great graphics and weapons, DOG is cool & it plays very nicely. But where's the soul? It just feels like an unexplained trek through a bland landscape fighting identikit enemies the whole time. Where's the invention that HL had in spades? None of the locations stand out at all compared to Black Mesa. Verdict is in: Black Mesa 10/10 HL2 8/10
Wish they'd release Black Mesa on Xbox.
*Mac OS
Hitman OR Dishonored?
Going to buy myself a present.
Hitman is better imo
That'll do, thanks!
Wrong choice pal.
might buy Far Cry tonight
and Batman City. That's good ennit?
It is
i didn't get far cry (can't really afford it at the mo)
but Batman is ace! Really liked Arkham Asylum and this one seems to have even more potential
Omm I kinda accidently purchased Dragonborn last night.
Morrowind fans will love the look of it. All I want now is a Black Mesa style remake of Morrowind.
