needless to say, Satantango (the 7 hour epic) and Werkmeister Harmonies are probably two of the greatest films ever made
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was GREAT - Muppets is different, (e.g. the surrealism mainly comes from the puppet/human interaction) but I did love it. it's really good

There's a few mentioned in here I really liked- Shame, Killer Joe, The Hunter, Dredd, The Muppets, Rust and Bone ... There's probably more. It would be good if Cineworld could send me a list of everything I've been to see.
Yet to see the films I was most excited-in-advance by, tbh. Missed Sound of Her Voice at the cinema (out on DVD now, weighing up whether or not to buy it or wait for LoveFilm) and Sightseers and Smashed are out just now/soon.
The Muppets
Cabin In The Woods
Looper
Iron Sky
Shut Up And Play The Hits
Avengers Assemble
Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
21 Jump Street
The Woman In Black
Chronicle
Headhunters
but I really liked Argo, The Muppets, Wild Bill, Avengers Assemble and the Polish film I've forgotten the name of about the guy who hid Jewish people during World War II.
Two main things I've failed to see so far are the Cabin in the Woods and Rust and Bone.
1. The Turin Horse

and in particular Damsels in Distress there (all of which I want to see). what d'ya think of Whit Stillman's other films? I dug Metropolitan, but haven't seen the rest
@Severed799 Interesting piece and a good read. I feel that because of the film's intriguing themes and Anderson's standing (with his last few films he's accumulated a lot of deserved credit) - people are reading loads and loads into the film and coming up with fantastic interpretations. I personally found it incredibly boring, and don't think the ideas hidden within the film were particularly well articulated. Still, a compelling watch, with loads to recommend about it.
@DanielKelly I did see Prometheus - apart from one v. strong scene and Fassbender's excellent performance, it left me completely nonplussed. So I reviewed it using only the facial expressions of Eddie Murphy: http://tinyurl.com/a7hejlb

never found myself disagreeing so much with the critics end of year roundups. holy motors, beasts of the southern wild, the master and moonrise kingdom seem to be in most top 10's. don't understand what people saw in them.
Perks Of Being A Wallflower
Ruby Sparks
Avengers Assemble
The Dark Knight Rises
Lawless
Looper
Martha Marcy May Marlene
Another Earth
Shame
Prometheus
Gayby
also worth mentioning
Breaking the Girls (poor production values but much better than I thought it'd be)
I did enjoy it more than I thought I would, considering the book bored me at points(overall I enjoyed it) the film was cast and put together very well. I'm interested to see how they deal with The Great Gatsby next...
the master
^going to see tomorrow night, canny wait!

If you "could" include Compliance in your list in what position you put it?
Carancho
Skyfall
Martha Marcy-Mae Marlene
Headhunters
Forgot: Cabin In The Woods
Only saw two new films this year...
Lawless (pretty good but flawed) - 8/10
Looper (easy enough to understand, but absolute nonsense for nonces) - 3/10
Realistically, how many new films could a person see in a year?
Not sure i trust people who claim to have watched 20, 30, 40, etc.
Don't think i've ever done more than about one every two months.
I normally watch two a week
so around 100 new films a year?
Course ya do.
well I guess you could exclude times I'm not at university
probably closer to 50 - 70
I can draw up a list if you'd like
But you're a thickie
who can't handle subtitles. Don't be embarrassed, acknowledge your limitations.
three of my favourite films are foreign language films.
you've probably not seen them, tbh.
The Romanian Goat Porn Trilogy
should really count as one film.
I assume some are watching films on their laptops rather than
going to the cinema
or have those cinema card things
or work in a cinema
The Master/Amour tied
couldn't pick a fave
Turin Horse was 2011, non?
Haven't properly thought about mine yet, off the top of my head
Dark Knight Rises
The Muppets
Another Earth
Looper
Killing Them Softly
Dredd
Argo
Skyfall
Martha Marcy May Marlene would make mine but I'm pretty sure I saw it at the end of 2011
eh
Looper
The Muppets
shut Up and play the hits
Katy Perry: Part of me 3D
Holy Motors
errrrrm
Shut Up And Play The Hits
Shut Up And Play The Hits
Skyfall
The Dark Knight Rises
Martha Marcy May Marlene (if that came out this year, idk)
Avengers Assemble
Cabin In The Woods
Moonrise Kingdom
Seen a lot of films this year, usually struggle to see five
oh yeah, The Muppets
between Cabin in the Woods and Moonrise Kingdom
Oof forgot moonrise kingdom
that was good.
It was OK
Bit Wes Anderson by numbers. My gf enjoyed it more than me, i just thought it was kind of fine
1. THE RAID
others I liked:
Muppets
the Master
Avengers
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Cosmopolis
and loads of others that were good
gonna go see Amour tomorrow + not seen Turin Horse yet (I will be surprised if it isn't one of the greatest films of all time)
Ssssh.
You're not allowed to like Bela Tarr on here.
it's good but flawed
like most of bela tarr's stuff. when it lands though it's brutal and bleak as absolute balls.
Argo
Avengers
The Master
Moonrise Kingdom
Of those I've seen so far
The Dark Knight Rises
Argo
Looper
Moonrise Kingdom
Cabin in the Woods
Worst
Resident Evil: Retribution
Underworld: Awakening
Wrath of the Titans (I actually fell asleep)
Iron Sky
Twilight Saga: Breaking Down Pt 2
There's a few others I wanted to see but missed already mentioned above - hope to get to Rust & Bone before it finishes.
Subtly surreal, giddy mischief and representation of humanity-within-immanent-cosmos make for my favourite movies
Anything like that come out this year? Or it's Amour by default (kinda the latter at least, if not as much as TWR)
do you like Bela Tarr, Loui?
he's not any of those things mentioned but he is one of the greatest filmmakers pretty much ever and I think you ought to like him
p.s.
Subtly surreal, giddy mischief and representation of humanity-within-immanent-cosmos
is a surprisingly accurate description of the Muppets movie
(and Maybe Beasts of the Southern Wild - tho I doubt you'd like that particularly)
Ooh, well if it's anywhere near as good as Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs I will have to see it
Bela Tarr is unknown to me, lead on...
I wrote out a few lengthy replies to this
abandoned them all for a variety of reasons
needless to say, Satantango (the 7 hour epic) and Werkmeister Harmonies are probably two of the greatest films ever made
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was GREAT - Muppets is different, (e.g. the surrealism mainly comes from the puppet/human interaction) but I did love it. it's really good
I've only seen two films at the cinema this year.
Both were the Avengers...
The Avengers
Skyfall
The Hobbit
didn't think I had many...
then realised I have loads
Your Sister's Sister
Moonrise Kingdom
Damsels in Distress
Safety Not Guaranteed
Take This Waltz
Jeff, Who Lives at Home
The Master
Silver Linings Playbook
The Raid
2 Days in New York
21 Jump Street
ParaNorman
oh yeah 21 Jump St was surprisingly good
this is pretty much a list of films I meant to see this year but didn't get round to
21 Jump St is the only one i've seen there.
Prob these at the moment
Once upon a time in Anatolia
The Master
Holy Motors
Amour
Into the Abyss
nothing that I've absolutely loved, but
avengers
the raid
looper
killer joe
killing them softly
were all pretty good
...
Ruby Sparks
21 Jump Street
Dark Knight
Looper
Avengers
Cabin In The Woods
I've enjoyed
Looper
Skyfall
Avengers Assemble
Ted
Dredd 3d
Dark Knight Rises
There's still a lot to see (Amour, The Master, Holy Motors, ...)
After Lucia
Beasts Of The Southern Wild
This Side of Resurrection
The Queen of Versailles
Short films
Bankers
Raju
Along the Road
Saving Face
I can never remember what I've seen
Dredd was the film I probably enjoyed the most in the cinema. Didn't know what to expect at all, and it was brilliant
did anyone see silent souls?
it looks really good
yeah
it was nice. felt like it dragged on a bit though even with the short running time
Shame
Shut Up And Play The Hits
Dredd
Argo
The Dark Knight Rises
The Muppets
Sub thread: Worst film of 2012
If you say anything other than The Dictator, you're lying or had the sense not to watch it
Prometheus
I haven't seen it, but I expect Keith Lemon: The Movie to be right up there
a fantastic fear of everything
by a fucking mile
Was tempted to see that with the Cineworld card
just to see how bad it was. My friend walked out after 10 minutes.
what to expect when you're expecting
enjoyed the dictator
Act Of Valor
was dire.
cabin in te woods
:D
You need to get out and see some REALLY bad films next year
trust me I have
I just HATED that film
Starbuck, which I saw today
comes quite close.
THIS. MEANS. WAR.
Paranormal Activity 4, probably
The Muppets
The Muppets

Wow, you've watched a lot of films
Electrick Children, Elena and Silent Souls are all pretty good but not amazing. Definitely worth a watch though.
Ha, everyone needs a hobby
Yeah I've had Electrick Children lined up to watch for ages, love the concept of it!
you've definitely seen all of those films.
definitely.
ive probably seen as many which came out this year
Also forgot Killer Joe
which I LOVED
Cabin In The Woods
21 Jump Street
The Muppets
End Of Watch was surprisingly good too, really got the adrenaline flowing and Jake was solid as always
i liked when ai weiwei's cat used the door handle
i think it was a metaphor but it was still cool
haven't seen many
thought the cabin in the woods was okay until a third act misstep
i just don't give a shit about culture anymore am i bad for this
this is possibly the most psychotic review i've ever read though
and i love the review as a result:
http://observer.com/2012/09/the-master-rex-reed-philip-seymour-hoffman-joaquin-phoenix-paul-thomas-anderson/
he has several good points, especially about the film's complete style-over-substance vamping
But that list of worst movies ever has probably offended literally evermovie fan going!
brewster mccloud
no way
what films does he like?
he's seems to trash anything without a conventional narative
reading his other reviews, I'm not sure if he just really likes to wind people up or if he is an actual idiot
presumably the first
This guy hates all my favourite films
he can just do one as far as I'm concerned
late entrant in the chart
Sound Of My Voice
Think I enjoyed these the most (in no order)
The Raid
Avengers
Beasts Of The Southern Wild
Cabin In The Woods
Martha Marcy May Marlene
Argo
Looper
Not seen The Master or Sightseers yet though.
Oh, and Shut Up And Play The Hits
i only started properly going to see films in the 2nd half of the year
when I got a job in a cinema. Regardless, it's:
Holy Motors
The Master
Beasts of the Southern Wild
kid with a bike
only film i really liked
Saw Keyhole
Can't remember what else.
Might see The Suicide Shop tomorrow.
Struggling to remember much now.
There's a few mentioned in here I really liked- Shame, Killer Joe, The Hunter, Dredd, The Muppets, Rust and Bone ... There's probably more. It would be good if Cineworld could send me a list of everything I've been to see.

Cabin In The Woods
21 Jump Street
Looper
The Muppets
The Dark Knight Rises - THAT'S A LOVELY, LOVELY FILM!

but I loved Moonrise Kingdom, liked On The Road, liked The Hobbit, liked Prometheus #controv
Can't remember anything being absolutely outstanding
but I really liked Argo, The Muppets, Wild Bill, Avengers Assemble and the Polish film I've forgotten the name of about the guy who hid Jewish people during World War II.
Two main things I've failed to see so far are the Cabin in the Woods and Rust and Bone.
may as welllll do a new list now I've seen more films:
1. The Turin Horse

6. The Muppets
7. Beasts of the Southern Wild
8. Cosmopolis
9. Killer Joe

interesting to see the Imposter, Cabin in the Woods
and in particular Damsels in Distress there (all of which I want to see). what d'ya think of Whit Stillman's other films? I dug Metropolitan, but haven't seen the rest
Last Days of Disco I enjoyed more,
but that's all I've seen of Stillman.
@Severed799 Interesting piece and a good read. :)
Point of order- some of them aren't facial expressions
It is a strangely alienating film
I wasn't sure how to feel about it the first time but it was very satisfying seeing it again.
yea come on
damsels in distress, imposter and michael are top. michaels final scenes are ridiculously unnerving
do agree with cabin in the woods
absolutely awful
forgot about the turin horse, that was great.

Really nice to see one portuguese movie in your top3 :)
what other good ones are there?
think tabu might be the only one i've ever seen. don't remember anything by manoel de oliveira making it to the cinema here, or tv.
Done this before but I have seen a few more films I guess so
In no particular order this time
Perks Of Being A Wallflower
Ruby Sparks
Avengers Assemble
The Dark Knight Rises
Lawless
Looper
Martha Marcy May Marlene
Another Earth
Shame
Prometheus
Gayby
also worth mentioning
Breaking the Girls (poor production values but much better than I thought it'd be)
another earth was last year
watch sound of my voice
just saw Django Unchained
it is far and away the best film of the year
Don't yet know.
Am doing a massive catch-up in the last few days. Even the Rain and A Royal Affair will both be in my top ten now.
Me and my friend have posted our little blog lists up:
http://reflectonfilm.co.uk/2012/12/31/top-ten-films-of-2012-rob-arnott-contributing-editor/
http://reflectonfilm.co.uk/2012/12/26/top-ten-films-of-2012-tom-cottey-editor/
which one is you?
both pretty good lists either way
really need to see this once upon a time in anatolia thing, dun't I
Yeah, you do.
But make sure you've got enough time to adequately do so!
SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS
Moonrise Kingdom
2 Days in New York
Holy Motors
Being Elmo
Sound It Out
Another couple of votes for Shut Up And Play The Hits and Holy Motors.
kid with a bike was awful
it was great
i saw it on a second date
i thought that kid was going to get raped. then we went for a curry and i thought they were going to force feed me pig's feet. it was awful
dont order pigs feet curry next time
no i didn't
i was just really worried
On The Road, even if it's only for Viggo playing Burroughs.
I like On the Road more than i thought I would
it was pretty harshly received by critics - by no means a brilliant but yeah decent enough.
then again I don't think the book is the masterpeice a lot of people seem to so what do I know
Neither are masterpieces, they are just romantic.
I did enjoy it more than I thought I would, considering the book bored me at points(overall I enjoyed it) the film was cast and put together very well. I'm interested to see how they deal with The Great Gatsby next...
Didn't have anything I adored or hated
Avengers was good fun.
Looper, Dark Knight Rises and Skyfall all had their flaws but were fun. Promotheus wasn't quite as terrible as you lot made out, but it wasn't great.
Saw some stuff on a plane too that may have been out this year (MI4, Bridesmaids, Tinker tailor soldier spy).
Thing I enjoyed most may have been the reprint screening of Raiders of the Lost Ark.
as a standalone
prometheus is alright, the middle section is quite good fun.its just massively flawed
also watched berberian sound studio yesterday
really good that
I saw a lot of films I liked, but my top 3 were
The Master
Looper
Holy Motors
