Companies like that have to fight against their brand becoming the generic term for that product or they risk having the relevant trade mark invalidated. Xerox really struggle with this in the US.

And if a mark becomes generic then it can't do that any more.
I've seen a full-page advert from Xerox imploring people to not use it as a verb. It's nuts.
