who lives in oxford?
and a bit stabby in parts
it's nice. Lots to do along Cowley Road. Express Pizza is amazing.
That's in Oxford
Cowley (not cowley road) is fairly cheap. Avoid blackbird leys though.
Was suprised how divey the bars were though. I like a dive, but not one thats just SHIT. Baby love? Is that a place? I spoke to a girl where her eyes were really far apart.
Ahahaha that place is vile. There are loads of places like that. Lava & ignite as well. Old fire station (rip) DTMs (rip). Even the 'classy' places are a bit worn out.
We played at the purple turtle and cellar (is it the cellar?) and I was picking brick dust out my hair for days. I liked the Gloucester arms though! and the lamb & flag and all those pubs along there....
If it was between 2005-2007 I've probably seen your old band. Maybe I threw a drink at you.
It's sort of depressing.
I mean not that Lava & Ignite is anything other than a shitheap but it would be less depressing if there were less of them around.
someone who probably plays the oud in a folk rock band and only buys fairtrade. a wearer of hats.
no no no
My Gf has lived there for 18 months- she works for a Heritage charity based there.
Im getting pretty bored of it though- though that may be because I want to live nearer to her than anything else.
Cowley is good.
where do you live? is there a lot to do in oxford?
There's a lot to do given that it's a fairly small place.
There's a fair bit to do. Lots of nice pubs. Quite a few museums for a small city. It's a good place to spend a few days. Lots of tourists.
I live here. It's nice. Not as stabby any more as it was.
I forgot the regal had closed
It's now a Christian Life Centre. Weird.
It's fine if you don't want to, no worries.
you can stay at my house whenever you like
My landlord is staying with us right now. I'm gonna ask him to pay some rent.
totally do that
Too touristy for me though. But. Nice cafes and restaurants and pubs, good gigs occasionally. I like hanging out at Modern Art Oxford sometimes.
With a respected old university. There isn't really much more to say.
That's my favourite bit about Oxford. Excellent place to go drinking.
especially real ale ones
It has got some lovely old pubs, but they're always full of clueless students and tourists rather than real people.
i'm moving to oxford, more in this thread now please
i'm going there on monday though.
no its actually from an Alexisonfire song ageeees ago. if i could change, I'd choose ClassicHaroldBishop though
because every time i fuck your mother i eat a biscuit
that's apparently what he said to some louty student in response to the question "why are you so fat"
I like your username loads but always assumed you were called that because of, y'know, The Kennedy Curse: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kennedy_tragedies
You'll be closer to us.
go spoon tonight
got some drawing work i need to do but ill come down for an hour or so
Although I could ride down afterwards. Generally acoustic nights, even ones run by Scout, are the furthest thing away from my definition of fun.
I'm only going for a bit innit
go there quite a lot. some very good pubs, cafes, museums etc. and a few decent gigs every now and then
cowley road (as mentioned above) has a lot going on. there's a great french place in the covered market that does a wonderful croque monsieur too.
The ones in the centre are full of students in term time, obvs. But plenty of others up in the back streets of Cowley/Iffley Road and at the other end around Jericho/up towards Summertown.
quite nice, don't think I could survive there though without killing someone preferably not myself.
we can go to Purple Turtle.
it's not that good. Full of Freshers throwing up and dancing to Fatman Scoop. You'll love Oxford!
I used to DJ in there. When it was called 'The Cellar Bar'.
I'm seeing Iceage there on Saturday.
even though I have no idea what you look like!
50/50 ill be in Oxford and 50/50 ill be at the gig in Oxford!
I'm sure you'll scout me out :D
I used to be on Standing OCmmittee at the UNion and I would DJ in the downstairs bar and it was called The Cellar, or actually, irt was called The Jazz Cellar for a bit. then THe Cellar, and then The Cellar Bar. And then TPT. My god.
Although it's definitely two different places now, unless they're under the same management.
Next door to each other
PT a Union members' club
and then the Cellar. WEIRD. The place next to it (now calle d the cellar) used to be called The Crypt. COOOOL.
hopefully is hasnt got flooded.
That was taken on Tuesday though, I think. Water levels are now dropping
Probably on Cowley Road.
I loved that part of town
(Actually one year)
My gf lives at the top of cowley. It's an alright place (as I said up thread)
used to visit it quite regularly when I was younger and go back about once a year or so now. I like it (especially Modern Art Oxford and some nice pubs and fun stuff on Cowley Road and in Jericho) but it's starting to feel a little shabby now. It could do with a big nice shopping centre revamp like the ones in Birmingham and Bristol, as the 80s/90s arcades are looking a bit crap.
the Westgate Centre was supposed to be demolished to make way for a whole new complex, but the council don't have enough money. Now it's just full of shitty discount shops.
so that's good
I bloody love Reading. Munchees! Picnic! Milk (as in Afrobar)! The Allied Arms! Oakford Social! Rising Sun! Nags Head! Eldon Arms! Up the Junction! Sound Machine!
that amazes me.
the allied arms was the first pub that ever served me in reading. Does it still exclusively cater to old men and underage schoolchildren?
the best pub is the three b's.
3 b's 4 lyf.
+ allied arms seems to full of the same people that go to the after dark. ie - in their 30s. think that they are still cool.
+ the 3bs has been shut for an age. i tried to a gig there recently. £700 to open up.
+ the rising sun (pub) is now a gay bar.
+ sound machine is still there. doing as well as ever as far as i can tell.
I live in oxford and don’t really like it. Rental prices are pretty high, it’s quite small and you run out of things to do pretty quickly.
The live music scene has really dried up quite a lot in the few years I’ve been here. It’s very pretty but most of the pretty bits are university buildings/land you can’t go in which really quite annoys me. You have all this space in the town centre and it’s nearly all walled off.
The town centre is very crowded/cramped, especially in the summer with tourists and more irritatingly, school kids attending language schools – sounds churlish to be annoyed but they literally go around in groups of 50, and there’s normally a few of those groups out and about. There’s a high quota of annoying toffs.
Club wise it’s pretty terrible.
GOOD THINGS – there are a lot of pretty decent pubs, even discounting the more famous tourist trap ale pubs, the Oxford Tube/X90 offers 24hr access to London. Mission burrito is good. Jericho is a nice little area. Port Meadow is good for a mooch, or alternatively, good for getting a Peppers Burger and a tinnie and having a sit. Turl St Kitchen has excellent whisky at reasonable prices.
so if people aren't doing it then it can be done.
thanks for the input though :)
and if you have the energy for it, I applaud it. I used to do a bit of promoting, but got lazy.
