retired people working for their pensions

chris-budget [Edit] [Delete] 24 replies 12:53, 24 October '12

what do we think of this?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-20044862

having just a skim and not really formulated my opinions, i think this is a pretty disgusting idea.

we've been pretty shafted as a (loose) generation, but i really don't think this is in anyway the correct route to go down to address the problem.

Thoughts?

  • For fuck's sake

all of the poor are getting beaten with all of the sticks all of the time with this Government

    • Hmm.

What are you referring to as "the poor" in this context? Simply "retired people"?

      GetOffMyLawn @Body_In_The_Thames | 24 Oct '12, 13:07 | X
      • come on

Which retired people are going to be hit by this? Those who have savings, investments and other assets that mean their statutory pension is a nice little bonus on the side? Or those who actually rely on it to live, pay bills, buy food etc?

        Body_In_The_Thames @GetOffMyLawn | 24 Oct '12, 13:10 | X
        • It's just an idea at this moment in time.

An idea. I can't see this going through, but governments do need to "think creatively", as the article highlights, about the issues of an ageing population. This is doubtless just one example of many that have been discussed.

          But, sure, fair points.

          GetOffMyLawn @Body_In_The_Thames | 24 Oct '12, 13:17 | X
          • but this Government aren't thinking creatively

they don't approach any ideas of creating or distributing wealth fairly

all their ideas are about reducing cost and they don't seem to feel as though they have any duty of care to those in society who are most vulnerable - in fact they seem to view them rather more as numbers in an accounting column that need to be cut or sold off or moved to another column

            its frankly appalling

            Body_In_The_Thames @GetOffMyLawn | 24 Oct '12, 13:24 | X
            • They don't even see them as numbers in an accounting column

more a workforce of drones they can mobilise at will.

At what point did politicians sell the idea of tuition fees to the public? I thought it took several government U-turns to get there.

But yeah, this guy sounds like a dick, and looks like the demon headmaster, if the demon headmaster had just been worn down by the stresses of the job too much to actually go around doing mind-control.

    icehockeyhair | 24 Oct '12, 13:03 | X
    • yeah that bit stuck out to me as well

i don't really remember anyone being all
YES I WOULD LOVE SOME TUITUION FEES THANKS GOVERNMENT

      chris-budget @icehockeyhair | 24 Oct '12, 13:05 | X
      • I think he means selling the idea to policy-makers

they don't want to lose voter demographics

pensioners are a far larger voter demographic than students though (though obviously tuition fees is an issue for parents - possibly grandparents - of students too)

        Body_In_The_Thames @chris-budget | 24 Oct '12, 13:12 | X

  • I'm 28.

I don't really know anyone over the age of about 50.

As such, i find it hard to care about this sort of shit.

  • It's an appalling idea.

    theguywithnousername | 24 Oct '12, 13:44 | X
    • especially seeing as most will have already worked 45 years for their pensions

and it will inevitably lead to many people choosing to carry on working instead of retiring and thus occupying jobs and making it harder for younger people to enter the workforce

      Body_In_The_Thames @theguywithnousername | 24 Oct '12, 14:20 | X
  • You work for a pension all your life

I don't think anyone is silly enough to think that retirement age won't rise with the population getting older (thats putting aside the fact most of us will work in cushy offices not in the mines or digging up roads from 5am) but fucking hell its a bit mental saying theyre a 'burden'. They're old ffs - you can't work them til they drop dead

  • Great idea

Why don't we make parents work for their child benefit too.
Or make children and disabled people 'contribute'.

    What an absolute fucking bellend.

    Tillance | 24 Oct '12, 14:36 | X
  • do you reckon they chuck this out to test the water

but get some dick who looks to all the world like a sneery perma-entitled Tory to say it rather than somebody actually important? That way it's pretty much risk free, and gets the idea implanted in the public consciousness long before its possible implementation.
