sometimes feels like there's hardly any. Psychosomatic or real?
That's why people love them.
depends on the cocktail.
if you order a double you get 88ml which is the equivalent of 2 units
Most cocktails will have 2 shots in them which is around that of one beer but a lot of them also only have one shot, which is like having half a pint.
Remember 1 unit is present in 1 litre of 1% proof. Everything else can be worked out from there.
not proof, ABV, innit.
Either way, you're wrong.
me = stupid for correcting myself when I didn't need correcting, these forums have made me so paranoid about making mistakes that I needlessly correct myself
But the whole genesis of cocktails was during Prohibition and the drinks were mixed to hide the taste of booze, since it nasty stuff brewed in baths in basements. So to a large extent the taste of alcohol is meant to be disguised.
Punches, sours, fizzes etc. I know both Hawksmoor and the cocktail bar at the St Pancras Hotel focus on Victorian cocktails.
In response to the OP though, as someone else said, it really depends on what cocktail you're drinking. It's pretty hard to not notice the booze in a martini!
have the advert based on making cocktails with the drink, but don't want to/can't advertise any other spirits so the cocktail ideas are all like 'Tia Maria....with coke' or 'Disaronno....with orange juice'
So I can definitely relate.
I make a pretty good one. Possibly my favourite cocktail.
I actually don't keep bourbon at home any more because I would just inhale it in Old Fashioned form.
I may recently have decided that the most sensible way to use up a big bag of oranges was to make a shitload of Old Fashioned over the course of a week. That was a good - if unhealthy - week.
Bourbon (actually anything in the whole "whisk(e)y" genre will do if you're not fussy).
I muddled about three quarters of a teaspoonful of sugar with the juice from about an eighth of an orange, filled glass with ice, add bourbon while stirring slowly (if you can be arsed). I used another eighth of an orange, rubbed around the rim of the glass first, as garnish.
Adjust quantities to taste. I think that's a fairly sweet one but I was using a pretty throaty whiskey and it needed toning down.
I would think, well I can't leave 7/8ths of an orange sitting there, better have another 7 drinks
and, IMHO, nothing other than bourbon will do... But then that's just me.
But I had a bottle that needed disposing of to save me transporting it when moving flat, so...
I'll let you off this once.
That's the best use for a load of oranges. Next time I have too many oranges there's my plan sorted.
cos I always just think 'this would be so much nicer without the alcohol'. Like just loads of juice all mixed up.
i like the taste of some drinks but juice has so much flavour
Probably Hemingway Daiquiries for me
fondness for Long Island Iced Tea's and White Russians as well
topped up with another half pint of lager.
because I really love the idea of a savoury one and love it when they let you put in as much tobasco as you wish, you never get it right if you let someone else season it for you.
so yeah, it counts
The first time I went on an International flight (hence free drinks) I spent the entire 5 hours ordering bloody mary after bloody mary. Was brilliant.
Then a Manhattan trailing in second place.
I like bourbon.
Oh shit, maybe a caipirinha in second place. Bloody love a good caipirinha.
where can i get a good one?
i guess i tend to like cocktails that are difficult to ruin through poor mixing/generosity.
And three mediocre ones. But that's about it.
I keep getting told to go to this place that burns the orange peel first to give it a more burnt flavour. Sounds a bit fancy.
Never heard of a Hemingway Daiquiri, but I'm definitely trying one asap
Like frozen daiquiris and margaritas. It's like drinking boozy Slugs Puppie <3
And I like ones made with cream.
And ones with bits of fruit that you can mash up in your glass with those little cocktail straws.
And anything with a flavoured vodka. I have to be careful there though, premium vodka has a tendency to make me horribly unwell.
I'm annoyed at myself for being a massive wuss and not being able to drink neat spirits and liqueurs though.
I really, really want cocktails now.
because that seems like a sensible conclusion to draw in this instance.
they do it there.
a barman told me vodka was cheaper than real coke on tap. dunno if he was telling the truth or not, but it was definitely more vodka than coke.
