Tuesday Football Thread (racism, violence & a side order of sport)

Jordan_229_2 [Edit] [Delete] 196 replies 10:30, 23 October '12

F* erguson draws a line under the Rio/shirt debacle, stating communication issues for what happened. (FERGIE FORCED TO BACK DOWN)

* John Terry to captain Chelsea wearing an anti-racism armband. Like everyone else will be doing. Another non-story.

* Barcelona host Celtic in a game that will surely end 20-0.

* On top of the Champions League games there is a full schedule of Championship games tonight (i think), one of them perhaps Dougie Freedman's last match as Crystal Palace manager (i think).

These threads have been getting later and later, so here's one that is nice and early.

  • Away at dirty, dirty Wolves tonight

I'm quietly optimistic. We looked so much more fluid with the ball at the weekend and can go through teams if we play like that again. Just need to tighten up at the back, which will come. Hopefully.

    I'll go for a 2-1 us or 2-2.

  • Oh and re: Freedman...

I'm pretty underwhelmed. Gartside has repeatedly (and worryingly) stated that it is vital we get promoted at the first go. Is Freedman the man to do that? I don't know.

    • No managerial achievements of note...

...except doing an admittedly fine job at a club where he is an absolute hero.

Not disputing his ability or achievements or anything, just seems like a bit of a risky appointment.

Bring back Colin Todd I say.

it is a risk. Especially after the last one, which was a risk which cost us.

        • Oh he will.

If anything, Gartside seems to give his substandard managers a bit too fair a crack at the proverbial whip.

          • IDK

He got rid of Sammy Lee pretty sharpish. Megson was probably at the right time but he was too close to Coyle. Coyle should have gone last year.

Hopefully this experiment works out a little better.

          • After administration

After administration we were bought by four fans who all have a 25% share in the club. They also reunited the club with Selhurst Park for the first time in over decade. Under Simon Jordan we were paying over £1.2 million a year in rent, which we no longer do.
The poorest relation of our consortium is the front guy, Steve Parrish, who on his own is richer than Simon Jordan ever was. I believe he recently sold him company Tag for £90million.
Simon Browett is the main link to the fans through our forum although Parrish also posts quite regulary.
The other two are Martin Long, who founded Direct Line Insurance before selling to to RBS, and then founded Churchill insurance before doing that again. Then there is Jeremy Hoskings who is more a silent partner than the rest but is quite high up on the UK rich list.
However, they are not splashing the cash as such, as they want us to be self sustainable which most fans are more than happy with. Most fans love our board for their openess and diagalogue with the fans. They also have the issue that Simon Jordan was selling 3 year, 5 year, 10 year and in extreme cases 25 year season tickets to get cash in in his final days. They decided to honour those so are funding the revenue we would be getting from those.

    • Lennie Lawrence

I'd imagine that Lennie Lawrence will be in charge for Palace tonight if Dougie isn't. Although I don't trust a word Rich Cawley says.

Although I would imagine that Lennie will be following Dougie to Bolton, as we appointed Lennie to be Dougies mentor/teacher/advisor. Then I'm pretty sure Gartside wants to keep the current backroom staff at Bolton so I'm not sure if Lennie would fit in.

At this stage in Dougies development, i'm not sure what he'll be like without Lawrences guidance.

As for Coppell, he is undoubtably our greatest Manager ever and I'd like him back to steady the ship, but long term I'd like Karl Robinson of MK Dons, a young up and coming manager whose assistant/coach is another Palace great, Ian Wright.

      ynot @Verbal | 23 Oct '12, 11:23 | X
      • Lennie Lawrence!

Very, very few cast-iron legends left in the game but Lawrence is undeniably one.

        GetOffMyLawn @ynot | 23 Oct '12, 12:01 | X
        • That he is.

Every season since the new board took over we've had a fans forum at the end season where fans can quiz the board, Freedman, Lawrence and some players.

Lawrences stories make a great listen and he is a very funny chap. I'd miss him if he leaves too.

    • Press conference tomorrow

Freedman isn't in charge tonight and Lawrence will be in the dugout. But apparently tomorrow there is going to be a a joint press conference with our board and Freedman. Souness is also apparently in the frame now for the Bolton job.

Odd, I don't know what to believe anymore.

        • Yeah

I wouldn't wish Souness on anyone. We were linked with him once when Jordan was in charge.

I'm not kidding myself that Freedman isn't leaving. Even if he doesn't go it will still be a bit of a farce.

Strangely we could win tonight, go top of the League and be without a manager.

  • Just reading up on Shakhtar- apparently they've won about 20 domestic games in a row

and haven't lost for about twice as long. Gonna be a real tough game by the sounds of it.

I think it's become pretty clear that some kind of thorough report or review into racism in English football is necessary, with full disclosure from many people in the game. I don't think you can blame people for thinking racism is no longer a major issue in English football- that's what the evidence (or lack thereof) in the public consciousness strongly suggests. The reaction of some players this weekend suggests that is not be the case- a health check looks pretty necessary to me.

      • Be interesting to see what clubs have learned about managing young players in the last 15 years

There's plenty of examples of players from the older generation, Terry being an obvious poster boy atm, who have experienced unprecedented levels of fame and wealth and been so indulged by clubs that they think they're untouchable.

          • Pretty much all my friends are teachers in the London/Essex/Kent areas

and between them they teach an assortment of 7-16 years olds on the books or radar of the big London clubs. Apparently they all turn into dicks the minute they hear a club is interested in them, usually spurred on by thicko parents.

    • Could possibly happen

but it looks like Freedman doesn't have an infatuation with 4-4-2 and has a focus on fitness. Which would be welcome. We've barely been going onto the pitch with a gameplan this season.

      (I will fight you)

      Verbal @Jordan_229_2 | 23 Oct '12, 17:25 | X
      • Freedman is a wild card. had some very good players to help him out when his tactics failed at Palace, obsessed with fitness and the Italian style of grinding out results.

Disappointed he went. potential career suicide. Yes Bolton are a bigger club now but Palace have far more upward potential some of the players coming through if they keep improving would walk into any team in England. getting the balance right and playing the right tactics for the team is key. Palace's strength is they have 3 attackers on their day who are completely unplayable in Zaha,Bolaise and Williams.

part of me doesn't expect Freedman to last the season at Bolton but we'll see.

we need a dynamic footballing manager at the helm at Palace, don't know who's out there that inspires confidence.

Chelsea look brilliant going forward until they pass the ball to Torres who is having one of his 'games' ie utterly infuriatingly slow of thought and lacking any ability.
