Are they all genuine?
I reckon I average between one and three, all genuine. Usually sick for at least two or three times as many days.
Catholic guilt is hard to kick.
I always end up getting genuinely ill just before Christmas. Yeah, THAT'S when I need it. Thanks body.
I've taken 2 days off this year without a laptop. I've taken about 5 off with a laptop. I'm not really allowed sick days as there is no one to do my work and stuff needs doing RIGHT NOW apparently.
I did, however, take about 2 weeks off five years ago, and that wasn't genuine at all.
and I've had 6 occasions where I've been off sick. Two of them from being signed off, two from having anxiety attacks and the other two just general sickness. Pretty bad start to a job.
one because of a massive headache which turned out to be an allergy to a cleaning product, one because i had to pick up a friend from the airport.
hadn't taken any before that.
Put nd down for ~one (legit) day per year, on average.
which was genuine (although it was just a really stinking cold, but I thought I earned it).
I only get ill at weekends or holidays.
All genuine but I'm a lot more willing than I used to be to take the day off if I feel like shit but could conceivably work. I used to be an utter martyr and only take sick leave when I physically couldn't get into work and it tended to make things worse...
I don't pick my dates in advance.
I go in more often when I am utterly sick to show them what i MUST be like when I take a day off. like today, i am utterly fucked, but still in work.
in fact even if i'm sick but not contagious i'll probably go in because i'll only be screwing myself if i take time off
I think I took one off in my last job. Not taken any so far in this one, though I've had a couple of mornings off for doctors and stuff like that.
Five were genuine and I can't work from home.
And that final one I was quite ill but could have made it in if I'd made the effort. But I didn't.
2 days off sick
however in my last job i took two weeks off sick to enable me to find another job
Haven't taken a single sick day in 2 and a bit years here.
Do you know a man with brittle bones?
and probably one of those is not genuine.
on average anyway.
if you are sick at the weekend - so you miss a weekend of fun, do you ever roll this sick day over onto your weekday?
also - if i'm sick i don't go in. i just rest up and am usually right as rain after a day. none of this coughing and spluttering in the office nonsense.
all for one continuous sick period. I actually came in on the first day, and got sent home after vomitting 3 times.
Year before that, 2 days, both continuous. I also got sent home for that.
I've been feeling a bit shitty for the last week and a half, on and off, and I always wake up, lie in bed and want to take the day off...
I can only remember two instances when i pulled fake ones, one was when a musician I really loved wanted to film a video session at my flat and only told me the day before and the other was when I found out I'd been turned down for voluntary redundancy and would have to interview for my own job EVEN THOUGH I was leaving within three months regardless, so I called in sick the following day and went to the cinema with my then-girlfriend. FIGHT THE POWER
as of this year: probably about 10. i've genuinely phoned in sick for each of them
i've not suddenly got a terrible disease, but rather i've got a boss who isn't an arsehole and a job that pays me when i'm ill.
I've left early a couple of times when I've been ill,, and had a couple of hours off for doctors / dentists several times, but I've never rung in sick. I'd never take a fake sick day.
you basically just sit inside, racked with terror that if you go out you'll be caught by someone from work, even if you're miles and miles from your office.
Normally pull one fake sickie a year though because I fancy an extra day off... bit naughty but, meh.
Didn't have a single sick day last year though which I was insanely proud of.
What a healthy/guilty bunch we are.
Or too ill to post on DiS today. Yeah, that must be it.
Recession strickent job-loss fearing broken britain.
All of the people who were calling in sick are now on incapacity benefit ennit, clogging up the system and stealing benefits from those who need them the most pal.
Benefits are a lifestyle choice, remember.
can you email in sick to your job? there was a period when i could do this. jokes.
I rang in, he was busy or elsewhere, spoke to a senior colleague he said I sounded awful and promised he'd let the boss know and call me if he needed to confirm.
Went in the next day still feeling rough and he had a go at me for not calling and speaking to him. FFS. Glad I'm out of there.
All usually because I'm really, really snotty and don't want to spread a cold. I rarely get properly ill. I think I've taken about 2 this year.
I still kind of can if my manager doesn't answer the phone.
I tried calling (twice), emailed, then fell asleep until half three. Didn't think there was much point phoning after that.
But I took one today because I figured that I am very sick and would probably die on the cycle into work. I'm not long at this job either but I am genuinely ill so I dunno.
this year 90
so my average won't be so hot going into next year
i don't understand this at all?
you all seem perfectly comfortable wasting company time on popular music website DROWNED IN SOUND, but won't take a day off when you are ill?
what's up with that?
because i was a low-paid temp, not knowing if there'd still be a job for me post-illness if i took the day off, and not wanting to miss out on that pay anyway. my temp agency probably had a system for sick pay, but they didn't publicise it and it'd probably be difficult, and still wouldn't stop them from cancelling my placements.
now i have a grown up job and if i tell my manager that i'm feeling a bit sick he tells me to fuck off home until i'm better. he's swell
I was a temp from 18-21, so no worky, no money. I think such long periods of time of such employment insecurity changes your boundaries of what counts as "sick" and what doesn't.
Typical Chris-budget post.
Particularly when either or both of these apply:
(a) They keep telling everyone how ill they are
(b) They are contagious
And I was on holiday at the time. I'm a goddamn machine.
and I can't physically fit in 3 days work in the remaining 2 days off the week if thats what I have off. Its easier to work when ill and do things shittly rather than stress out when I'm still not feeling 100%.
That's not the case. My job gets done. I've been here long enough that sometimes it can be done very quickly because I am efficient. But that doesn't mean work magically appears immediately to fill its place. Parts of my job involve waiting for people get back to me on something or for something to build.
As far as 'in work when I am ill', we've established I've not been massively ill (although I've remembered illness! I'll post that) but in general with a pain killer I can do most of my work. If I wasn't working anything I'd enjoy doing would require the same level of concentration so it seems silly to force my colleagues to do extra work.
This year its been 1 day (for a swollen eye) and half a day when I got sent home
All my sick days have been related to being diabetic, so they can't be classed as sick days on my record. Huzzah!
who would consider her sick day allowance as holiday and would make sure she used them up each year sick or not
Probably about 14.
At this job I don't have easy access to a toilet so if I have a water infection (which I seem to get quite a lot of, probably because I can never go to the toilet when I need to if I'm at work) I stay at home so I can wee whenever I want to.
I also get period pain so awful that I can barely walk sometimes.
I'm a bit pathetic.
of which 2 or 3 will be days when i could have gone in, but didn't really feel up to it.
Never really been questioned about it too much. Still feel hella guilty every time, but whatever. FREE DAY!
Got sent home on a Wednesday lunchtime with flu, came back Monday.
Got assaulted, took one day off despite being told to take a week.
Threw two sickies in lieu of only taking a day off after being assaulted.
Was earlier on in the year and had a stomach bug.
I'm not sure when my last sick day was. Probably had 2 in 13 years or something.
so you pretty much haven't been sick in 13 years?
I don't really get colds like others tend to: I will have a few days with a sore throat, then some more with just a blocked nose then more with a running nose. I rarely get sick.
I have had some illness: there was a week when I had tonsillitis 10 years back but it happened to coincide with a lot of work having to be done so I just alternated paracetamol and ibuprofen to keep the fever down until I got antibiotics on the Friday from the walk-in clinic.
I don't really get sick, I guess. Even at school I never used to.
That was pretty rubbish. I had to take a day off but I worked from home most of the rest of the week, I think.
You clearly loathe it and it feeds into your health. My job frequently bores the shit out of me but I get a decent wage and all jobs are basically shit. I think it's just I'm one of those people who just has a 'shell' and accepts that a job will be an awful way of paying for the other time in your life to be better and I don't let it affect me.
I mean, it says as much about me being dead inside as it does about you being affected by surrounding things, the sort of attitude you need to be a good artist, which is presumably why you *are* a good artist.
Maybe you don't hate your job. I can only go on the threads you've started. You sound like someone who isn't happy with their work and wants to do different/better things. Again, if you think that's a sleight on you then I apologise for misunderstanding.
I've had 3 sick days in my professional life. Which means both that I'm exceptionally healthy in the present day, but also probably hugely susceptible to dropping dead instantly one day having built up no immunity
Three days? No.
need to get a couple in before christmas
the company removed the incentive scheme for people who were putting in flawless, illness-free years. I'd be interested to see how much illness leave has increased since then
Only time I was ill on a work day I had already booked it off as holiday. Was gutted about that.
This year half a one. I assume i'm always healthy cos I cook my meals from scratch.
3 x squits
0.5 x bit of a cold and bored so went home
Decided it would be a good idea to have a big bag of onion rings crisps and cream cheese for my tea, spent most of that night firing strange orange gunk out of both ends.
All genuine, I'm too busy to pull sickies because no-one else does my work when I'm not there.
Three of them were consecutive days when I got some sort of stomach bug and needed to be within 15ft of a toilet at all times.
I think I've had four days off to attend funerals during the same period.
because if I do, all the Viennettas just get plopped onto the mucky conveyor belt with no little-plastic-tray in place. unthinkable.
