Anyone got any suggestions for cultural places places to go?
bung this into google:
This is basically the extent of my German :D
but as i seem to be the only german on this board i thought i'd copy a message i sent to a friend when she went a while ago and asked for recommendations:
Curry 36 (Best Currywurst in Berlin) at the Mehringdamm, and the area around there is very lively at night with lots of cool bars. It's in Kreuzberg, which you should definitely spend some time in anyway, especially in the evening.
The same goes for Weserstraße, another street with lots of good bars, and it's in what's currently the "coolest" place in Berlin, where Kreuzberg and Neukölln intersect. Think Kreuzberg is the Shoreditch, and Neukölln the Dalston of Berlin...
As far as museums go I can recommend the new national gallery (Neue Nationalgalerie). They have an exhibition about German art from 1945-1968 on right now, which should focus on the East-West divide. I have seen the first part of this exhibition series and it was one of the best things art-wise that I've seen so far. Definitely check out this museum! (I also think they have some Hockney exhibition currently)
Concerning specific places to go to in the evening, Berlin is full of great and creative bars, especially in the areas I specified above, but also in Prenzlauerberg. I will still give you two bars that you should go see:
1. Madame Claude. Hands down the best bar/club in Berlin that I know of. They stick all types of furniture to the ceiling to create an upside-down feeling, and the musical happenings there are amazing. Make sure to go there on a Monday and descend into the basement, it's called "experimonday" and that's what it literally is!
2. White Trash Fast Food. Usually live music here, it's also a restaurant and the only smoking cinema in Europe. Great place to go earlier in the evening.
Make sure to drink AUGUSTINER BEER in Berlin, it's widely available and the best beer in Germany (in my opinion). Also, Tannenzäpfle.
Lastly, obviously Berlin is home to Berghain, which is pretty much the temple of Techno and electronic music in the world right now. A pretty mindblowing place.
Oh, and in summer there is usually also a swimming pool in the Spree river which should be great to go to at night. Look out for some jellyfish-like plasticky thing in the river, just in central Berlin. You should come across it anyway.
That's all I can think of off the top of my head right now. Obvously there are things like the Jewish memorial, Reichstag, the TV Tower and stuff but I'm sure those things are easy to find online on any website with "things to do in Berlin".
one more thing
I once met some old German guy on a train and he was kind of drunk and weird, but told me about this:
at Warschauer Straße, there is a massive territory that was built by the Nazis to fix trains, and now it is sort of abandoned.
You can find this place really easily, if you exit the S-Bahn Station at Warschauer Straße and go on the bridge, you see it immediately.
Now, this place has over the last few years been transformed into something called R.A.W. Tempel. It's like a free space for art and music, a lot of the buildings are squatted.
I went there and not much seemed to be going on, but you should definitely have a look as I know there are some free art spaces in some of the buildings.
If you enter the area from the side street, opposite of the gate saying R.A.W. Tempel there is also a great veggie burger place, but I forget the name.
I think you should go here, but I don't know much about it.
I wouldn't go there at night, I think things can get a little weird around there, but in daytime all is well!
Also, at the same stop (Warschauer Straße) you can visit the East Side Gallery, a long part of the wall that has been left standing and painted by artists from all kinds of different countries. It's nice to walk along that wall. It's opposite of the railroad tracks from R.A.W. Tempel, you can just ask, it's very famous.
German art from 1945-1968 is obviously outdated now, sorry
there's this really nice little jazz club, had a couple of good nights there a few months ago: http://www.badehaus-berlin.com
It's right by an old railway repair yard that's been turned into a club/beer garden/skate hall/climbing wall called Cassiopeia (http://www.cassiopeia-berlin.de/). Well worth a look.
lovely stuff, highly recommended
and White Trash Fast Food.
I'd also suggest the Bauhaus Archiv for culture and Transit for food. For another art space, Taschelles was cool; got some tips on good gigs from folk there too.
BUT, go for the Red Staropramen. Oh my days.
one of the most awesome things i've ever done..!
You'll find a plethora of brilliant suggestions from this app, including Madam Claude and Berghain as suggested above.
Kreuzberg is a goldmine for bars. I stayed on Warshauer Straße at the brilliant, brilliant Michelberger hotel. You'll find that that bar is well worth popping in for a pint or two late in the evening. Genuinely lovely atmosphere.
Want to go back so badly. It's a wonderful city.
