It's way scarier on 'conservative' sites when you express even slightly liberal opinions in the comments section though. There's still a lot of potential Nazis out there.
but it annoys the shit out of me when someone ignores nuance and context in favour of simply demonising the other person with name calling in such a way that they draw a line of either you agree with them OR you're a racist/misogynist/whatever.
But I love debate and anything that stifles debate is irritating and usually the sign of a simplistic viewpoint
gleefully calling out authors as needing to "check their privilege"
The derailing of conversations to debate semantics.
The need to process it all publicly ("Look at me look at me look at meeee! I am the very MOST aware of my privilege and am therefore the very BEST progressive on the entire internet!").
The intolerance and inability to respect that those who share your values might not share your opinions on this particular subject.
it's not really relevant to them, or at least the comments on there. especially in the comment is free section. you can see in the comments there that there's plenty of smug anti-PC types agreeing with the thing without grasping the point.
i don't think the language differences between the US and the UK help here as 'liberal' is really inadequate from a british point of view but this kind of thing does dog 'progressive' websites all the time. it's just a bit irritating though. i don't really know what else to do but shrug. i just stop looking at any site i don't find valuable any more.
what she is describing is something very real and pervasive in some parts of the internet, but it's not remotely relevant to CiF (which is pretty much a model of a certain 'kinda leftist but obnoxiously anti-PC' mode of thinking that much over-the-top internet-social-justice-ism is an understandable reaction to)
Have most members of the left not stored up enough moral credit to be entitled to make those around them feel stupid and insignificant?
