It's all about Big Clem Attlee
The least worst of the Prime Ministers during my lifetime
Nice initials too.
Can we stop rehabilitating Major? The man was a useless cunt, as was his entire government.
But as mentioned in my quote, he is the least worst useless cunt to be PM in my lifetime.
His negotiation of the Maastricht Treaty for the best interests of Britain was the mark of an exceptional statesman, and one that was borne out of hostility from not just the EU but from within his own party too. To lay such important foundations to being closer to Europe, in the climate he had to work in, was pretty damn impressive.
Although, regarding Europe, the less said about the ERM catastrophe the better (last time a British government has COMPLETELY lost control economically, to be honest).
The problem with Major is that he was, in essence, a decent chap but one too embedded with old-school Conservative values which were out of touch with the time he was governing. Yeah he was more progressive than most, but he still represented a `do as I say don't do as I do` old Tory mentality which was ultimately the death of him and his cabinet. It was his cabinet that was the worst thing - full to the brim of horrible, outmoded Thatcherite unpleasantness. He wasn't a bad bloke. His government, however, was horrible.
about the amount of people Harold Macmillan was related to in his own government. Real old fashioned ruling elite stuff.
by an absolute street.
Great man, made one mistake, but we shouldn't forget that he was the best PM we've had.
a fascinating study in mania, social anxiety and psychological dissonance. Loved watching what he'd do next.
came to my school a bunch of times, met him briefly. Really nice guy, I genuinely really liked him.
He just had a total nightmare trying to convey that on tv or in the media.
I think he was a really pleasant man- honest, decent, a family man, all that shite that other politicians try to claim they are.
He was just too awkward to be in the top job. I suspect he is borderline Asperger's, to be honest with you.
Apparently his wife is lovely too and used to take the other EU wives on days out and stuff. Just a regular middle class family who happened to run the country was how it always felt, which it never really did with Blair/DaveCam.
come on now.
I think it was the glass eye, made people uneasy.
No idea of how to conduct himself publicly, nervy, says the wrong thing without meaning to and then can't understand why it was wrong...
I have it myself, and probably need to stop trying to identify others. I've just always wondered when it comes to Brown...
I think the simple answer is that he was a man out of his time. If he'd been PM 30 years ago he'd have been more at home. The 21st century sound-bite / image-conscious style just wasn't him.
But then he was part of the reason it come to that in the first place
proper elder statesman respect.
also *bitter together?* really? I thought at least you were better than that.
but I'm not sure you did.
