[insert various complaints about speech marks here]
When I was growing up a kid in my school died in a silo of wheat. The teachers described it as being like drowning, and the idea of drowning in things that weren't water stuck with me. When I was trying to come up with a name, I kept coming back to ideas involving sound waves and surfing. And I was studying various rhetorical devices in English A-level to do with rhyme and memory. SoundSurfer was the working title, and I'm so glad I came up with something better. The fact it was almost diss, to cuss, etc, made it all the better.
Wrong, but a good answer.
I've been asking about this story for a while. Like who said it. I remember years ago it being mentioned! At last. CLOSURE.
However, I feel like I really need to do something else. At least for a while. Been spending half a day a week investigating into setting up a new label/management company (spent a lot of time looking into running a fan-funded record label, which would be more like a record club...).
The editorial side of DiS needs the eager 21-25 year old me. The site itself needs a lot of tech investment to evolve. I've been considering a few options lately. Turned down a few offers to sell the site since the Sky deal. Been down a lot of dead-ends.
It's pretty hard to even begin to work out how much it's all gonna cost. Spent about £12k so far, and there's still a fair bit to do. DiS' investor originally got half the company for £20k (he's since put in a bit more to keep things going, and lost a fair bit on the DiS label...)
i'll buy you one back
Alan McGee (although weirdly, I've met him in person a couple of times before that whole Twitter debacle, and we got along really well... still no idea where that tirade began)
There are far more nice people that people would think. Toby from Rockfeedback/Transgressive is one of the smiliest. Korda Marshall from Infectious who signed Muse, Alt-J, Ash, etc is one of the cheeriest and most optimistic.
Mark Bowen from Wichita probably fits the bill of the nicest. Although most people who run indie labels end up being far nicer and happier than I ever imagined.
The Queen of Limbs
*swizzles in chair* *strokes a cat*
Yes, there is a coincidence.
I doubt it. It grew out of frustration that there wasn't something like this. Imagining what it might be was the fun bit.
I'd probably be setting-up something that allows people to get download codes for music with almost any purchase.
_tom or matt?
they both had their merits, but DiS basically wouldn't exist without Matt. The guy is a legend.
We all let children die, every day. There are far better things we could all be doing with our lives. Everything else is just a distraction from the things we don't want to think about.
you're even more evil that I thought
How many children died in the time it took you to read this? *clicks fingers*
How old is DiS in internet years?
No, I have never-ever felt like this, but strange things do happen.
Y SO SCARED?
Probably not. I was just doing it while waiting for my tea to brew.
A tiger cub.
69 love songs.
Would you change anything?
I'd probably have quit back in about 2004 and become the Kaiser Chiefs manager. He now makes several hundred grand a year. Imagine how evil I could be with that much money!
So is not being able to afford to fix the website and people whining about it so much that you end up not visiting the board for 8months, unless someone emails you saying there's been a massive falling out.
or do you love them?
But not a romantic sense.
I have a fear of horses. Was knocked over and walked over by one when I was about three.
this was the first piece that came to mind http://drownedinsound.com/releases/8325/reviews/1230322
this is probably my favourite from this year http://drownedinsound.com/releases/16737/reviews/4144411
Fanks though, Sean.
dont know why.. :D
have you just made it up as you've gone along?
...if anyone else liked it, it's a bonus
Sometimes. I'm not sure they're always here to be liked.
which one would it be?
about 6:45. Sometimes 7:30.
i don't get up until 9
I usually don't goto sleep until 2am. I don't really sleep.
1) who are you suprised they have done so well
2) not done so well
Have you ever fallen out with any disers in a big, but humourous way?
Actually scrub that.....just tell me the most humourous DIs story.
1) Peppermint Apes
2) Jamie T
Lots. I don't really DO diplomacy.
you know my friend james brooke. he used to work for a company in london or something. i can't remember what it was. this isn't really a question so i will say... do you remember?
vaguely. is he the guy who did PR for Summer Sundae?
i was just looking at you on facebook the other day (hahahah) and saw he was a mutual. i'm going round his gaff for a brew tonight
Send samples in. Stuff that's written ready for being published is even better. cc andrzej@
As long as you promise to keep your nuts where I can see 'em
Sean, we'll give you some money. Tell me what you need.
what shower gel do you use?
something about a minty tingle.
any folk you've upset/done wrong in the course of doing DiS that you regret?
Not musicians, but I often regret a few things that needlessly offended writers and well-meaning souls who work in music.
I don't want to have to write a sample/the whole thing only for it to the not get published. But I do think it's something your readers would appreciate.
We'd be up for it, but I've made the mistake of agreeing to pieces and then people getting massively offended when we say it isn't of a standard that we'd publish.
from parks and rec.
T-shirts, mugs, pens, thongs. That sort of thing
I used to sell underwear - there's a guy in Leicester I know who could get his girls to knock up a few samples.
the main brief for the logo was that it had to be t-shirt worthy. it's tote-tally awesome
Better hold on to our "classic" DiS football shirts, they wil be worth a bomb in a few years.
I did it all for the chicks (i.e. I don't remember).
I met a man with seven wives, every wife had seven sacks, every sack had seven cats, every cat had seven kits.
Kits, cats, sacks, wives. How many were going to St Ives?
to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or to take arms against a sea of troubles and by opposing end them?
Emily Haines or Hayley Williams?
And the first few features?
a) roughly what does DiS cost to run a year, average?
b) roughly what does/can it bring in in advertising and other revenue?
i mean, i'm not expecting you to go into fine deteail, what you pay certain people for their time or services isn't my business, but generally speaking, so i can assess whether or not it's viable for me to make you an offer.
I've wasted 7 years of my life on here ffs.
But why do you feel so reluctant to ask users for money to help fund the costs of site development?
I mean obviously the question of funding is one that has weighed on your mind, but we have a pretty devoted user base here whose combined contributions would probably raise a decent enough amount.
Are you slightly worried that the actual costs of the mooted upgrade would be way above what you think could be raised by a fundraising drive amongst the readership?
Would a £5 a year be enough to give the site a boost?
What would that give you? All access or just forum use or special features?
who have met on this site and ended up bonking the fuck out of each other? Picturing all of the relationships made and destroyed, and all of the cunting wankers that this forum has given a platform to?
What did DiS wish blowing out the candles?
and why Radiohead?
If yes, have a cuddle, the site's still here
If no, what would you have done differently if that hadn't happened?
