Heh...not yet, anyway.
no way am I paying for the Onion if the Americans aren't
I haven't even looked at it the number of times on this computer that it's telling me i have.
“THE PROPHET MOHAMMED WAS A FANNY. JESUS WAS A CUNT. COLDPLAY ARE FUCKING SHIT. WELCOME TO DEMOCRACY. Arseholes.”
“MOHAMMED SUCKS CHRISTIAN COCKS AND JESUS LICKS MUSLIM MUFFS. That should cover it, eh? Fucking fantasists.”
was pretty funny, though that second one insinuates certain things about the sexuality of a certain figure
they can ____________, but they sure can't take it!
A few fringe groups who want to paint all Muslims as bad but I can't think of anyone powerful enough to influence the media to the required extent who this works out advantageously for...
The people who made it knew damn well what reaction is was likely to get and, predictably enough, it got it.
You're right that, as a general rule of thumb, people don't murder other people for mocking their deity but a small - but sadly significant enough to have an effect - number of people do.
What's depressing is when these things happen they're seen as reflective of the views of all Libyans or all Egyptians or all Muslims and of course they aren't. Depressingly but inevitably the people who do this kind of thing get their views heard a lot more.
Nutjobs attacking an embassy is the crowds protesting in all these different countries. It really doesn't help the muslin image to the wider world. Rather than burning effegies and calling for people to be killed wouldn't it be better to have someone denounce the attacks that killed innocent people.
It's a bit like the time the pope (stupidly) said Islam was violent and barbaric which led to protests which signs saying behead infidels and and make burning effigies. Not exactly proving him wrong there.
But I bet they weren't as exciting.
The only images the more tolerant Muslims, like the rest of us, see in the media is the images of angry mobs claiming to be the voice of Muslim opinion. And anyone striking a voice of moderation being denounced as a Western puppet. The problem is that
a) violent mobs make people frightened to speak up and express more moderate opinions.
b) the fact that the media coverage implies these protests are a mainstream Muslim reaction makes more moderate people think they're out of step and don't speak for other Muslims.
So the moderates stay quiet (or at least don't get the media coverage) and the space is left for the bigots to claim that they represent the legitimate voice of the religion.
There was a protest in Sydney yesterday, not large, but it got rowdy, with spitting & bottles & cops & dogs & injuries & arrests. One guy had a sign saying "Those who insult the Prophet should be beheaded" and he gave it to a little kid to hold: cue photo splashed all across the papers today.
I mean sure these people are complete assholes, but the media & General Public are obediently rising to the culture war bait and reacting as thought they'd flown a passenger jet into the Opera House.
I seem to recall the 'Lebs' vs Surfies thing getting a bit heated a while back.
They intended to draw out all the Muslims into protesting in the streets, then sneak in and steal their oil when they weren't looking.
Just most of the world grew out of if a few hundred years ago.
People are often killed or at least threatened for mocking Islam. That dutch film maker fit instance.
And remember that school teacher in Africa (Somalia maybe?) who got arrested for manning a teddy best Mohamed.
or arrested and hordes of people across several countries calling for people to be killed?
Do you honestly think they are parallel?
I mean, you've said that people are threatened for mocking Islam, and here's a story where people were threatened for mocking Christianity, so... maybe "most of the world" hasn't really grown out of it yet.
Of course, I'm being facetious. Obviously these aren't comparable events. But then, do you think Britain and Libya are parallel? Or Yemen, Egypt, Sudan? Is there a chance that Christian Voice's protest might have played out differently if, say, it happened in a Britain that wasn't an affluent parliamentary democracy but was emerging from a bloody civil war, bristling with unregulated weapons? I mean I'm just thinking out loud here, but it doesn't look to me like the religion in question is the only difference.
there are plenty of devloping countries that are christian and you didn't see them shiting the bed and attacking embassies over Jerry Springer the Opera.
There are cultural differences; Islam is about 600 years younger than Christanity and if you look at where that was 600 years ago it was a similarly shitting thing with all sorts of heritic burning. But it's the 21st century now and this bullshit they're pulling looks as archaic and ignorant to me as the Spanish Inqusition would if they were trying to pull that shit today.
Glad we agree.
