I was gonna say god bless america but then i guess the same thing happening here wouldnt be strange.
I think you're right it could easily have happened in association football over here, although here I think they might be more underhanded about it.
1. Being gay and living in *Nth Dakota* ffs
2. Having a 65 yr old boyfriend
3. When caught snogging said boyfriend, assuring people it was only his grandfather
4. Being called Jamie Kuntz
given that there'll be obvious repurcussions.
it's completely outrageous to imply anyone who's against gay marriage is a bigot. :-/
my knowledge on football is fairly limited but aren't the FA starting to tighten up on homophobia?
tighten up on homophobia (I agree, the hypothetical shitstorm that people say will happen here, just wouldn't. Noone would give a shit, at least who watch/play football)
I stand corrected. Shame, though.
Jeez, you gays are sensitive
oh I'm well confused.
but there's still no footballers who are 'out' in the leagues. Think there's a guy in Sweden and thats it
whose word should admittedly be taken with a large pinch of salt. There are apparently a few relatively high-profile Premier League and Championship players who are effectively 'out'- living with partners and openly gay to their manager, fellow players, family etc.
It would be somewhat reassuring if that's true.
Why do they feel like they can't come out publicly?
One. So shut up then.
And anyway, there's a lot more than one.
My point, Maggy, is that homophobia is still a problem everywhere not just with what you presume to be pie eating working class bigots on the terraces.
There's Mike Freer, Margot James, Greg Barker, and I'm sure there are others too, that's just off the top of my head.
Depressingly enough the Tory party is more accepting of homosexuality than Football.
Crispin Blunt, Nick Boles, Stuart Andrew are also gay. Likely to be more than that, as that's just off the top of my head...
It doesn't list them though.
Plus of course, there are the secret homosexuals too. I'm looking at you, Jeremy Hunt.
heard rumours about Fox and Hague of course.
Can you imagine the chants?
It would be 'somewhat reassuring' rather than cause for a street party as it would mean they weren't having to live a complete lie, and that perhaps football as a sport isn't the disgusting, bilious arena that so many think it is.
I can't really speculate on why hypothetical people wouldn't come out.
If all their family, friends, collegues, etc are aware and they are living their private lives openly I don't think they'd necessarily feel the need to issue a press release to tell the world.
loads of celebrities from the football world as well as elsewhere are celebrated for keeping their private lives out of the papers.
sorry, I mean I'm sure that there are some high-profile players who are, it'd be impossible not to really and I know Max Clifford's been going on about what he knows, I mean 'out' in the public eye
Going out with an Pro American Football player. Living the dream.
It's obviously horrible, wrong etc but I'm a little disappointed by the fleshed out story- I'd read another story where they didn't mention he was only watching from a box and had developed a mental image of him in full kit, breaking away from play to charge into the crowd and kiss the nearest elderly man. The truth doesn't have that vaguely comedic angle. It's just straight-up bigotry. Oh well.
are you trying to be funny?
Oh, yeah that was my grandad.
Oh ok, fair enough. Hope you both enjoy the rest of the game.
*what can I say my relationship to this older gentleman is? My Dad? No that's just weird*
''Have you met me granddad?''
*That's worse. Much much worse*
the question we have to ask is;
would he have been kicked off the team if he was kissing a woman 40-50 years older than him and telling people it was his grandma?
one of my male friends was going out with a guy whose band had recently signed to EMI. His boyfriend was told by label reps that his sexuality could only be known to close friends and family, and if he was open about his sexuality it would cripple his chances of making it. They're not together anymore and his band never made it.
but fuck it, they'll never make it.
The Mission District.
the fly styling displayed by one or more of these gentlemen doen't exactly suggest rampant heterosexuality:
guys in indie bands these days tend to be prettier and more precious about their looks.
there must be quite a few but it's never really talked about that much.
Now is that because a) it's irrelevant and the fans couldn't care
or b) they feel they need to keep it quiet for some reason?
There was quite a lot of questioning Kele from Bloc Party's sexuality at one point which seemed a bit unnecessary .
I suppose it depends on the band's demographic. If it's pre-teen indie/emo girls then I suspect some record labels would be keen to keep one's gayness a secret.
they want them to portray they're ready and available for their primary target demographic.
wouldn't it be better to have gay AND straight people in a band? Maybe even a wayward bi to make things a little interesting?
if it was like blazing squad or so solid crew then sure, bang a couple in. a three-piece? maybe not.
(incase someone jumps into this little tangent, i am indeed joking)
I meant before he came out/it was common knowledge. Wasn't there a whole Q(?) interview where they quized him about it? (I might be wrong)
Is it? Not really noticed it that much?
when everyone hinted at being bi.
as it really shouldn't matter. i couldn't care less if the bassist of Frightened Rabbit or a member of Hem are gay. why should it matter?
Hopefully that is the case that it's irrelevent and not because it's something that needs to be kept hidden like in football etc
antony & the johnsons, sigur ros, arthur russell, hidden cameras, patrick wolf, sufjan stevens etc etc etc. i don't feel a musician should need (not want, which is of course their choice) to proclaim their homosexuality more than one should need to proclaim heterosexuality. in the case of the above, particularly sigur ros and arthur russell, i think their sexuality is over-discussed.
i had literally no idea
jonsi is. he made an album with his boyfriend (riceboy sleeps) which is utterly wonderful. you should get it,
that needs to go in that best name ever thread.
I thought that was largely just hearsay
He put it about loads in an ambiguous way, comparing himself to Brian Molko and Morrissey in interviews, and commenting that 'I Still Remember' was about 'gay kids in school' or something similar.
