Has anyone been to Venice? Tell me about it!
I think I want to go next summer. From reading the Invisible Cities book (thanks book thread!) I've started reading up more on it.
What did people do there? Is it alright?

not as much canal as you would think
*anal
It smells
is full of tourists and is expensive. Just like many European cities I suppose.
sorry but i think you have venice confused...with your MA!
it's true that masters programs are pretty overpriced
and there are a lot of foreign students on some of them. Don't really see how they smell though.
possibly my favourite place in the world
What do you want to know?
everything!
will you go with me? (i think i'll go on my own actually). erm just the vibe, i guess i dunno.
um, ok!
But I like to stay here because i get to have my own island *insert high-maintenance belmface*

Actually, let's not do that because last time I was there was with my husband *insert sadface*
We can stay at my back up place- http://danieli.hotelinvenice.com/
(the cipriani is old hat these days).
We need to go to this for some opera- http://www.musicapalazzo.com/
seriously jordan
just go there, find somewhere half decent to stay that won't cost the earth, visit the doges palace, go up the tower at st mark's do as many boat trips as you can bear, haggle over shopping on the rialto bridge, eat EAT everything in sight (the windy back streets are where the locals go to eat and are much less expensive and more authentic than the touristy places.) Do that opera thing i linked you to. Go to the lido. have a drink in Harry's Bar (ut's proper dogshit, but when in Venice....) FALL IN LOVE <3
ok
I was once asked to leave Harry's Bar.
I hear it's the Birmingham of the South
Ha, I was going to post a quote from Invisible Cities until I saw you mentioned it!
Yeah I really want to go to since reading it. Will probs go next year.
sub thread (sorry to hi-jack)
i can't decide on whether to visit Rome, Venice or Florence next year. Which one would you lot suggest?
venice
Not Rome
Its horrible.
You're crazy as fuck
Rome is immense.
Yeah It smells and is expensive.
Pret.ty though
He's missing her badly.
"Come home, please..."
"I've started a new life now, you have to move on"
"I'll come to Spain"
"Erm...no, that'll never work"
"I'll...I'll...I'll take you to Venice"
"Erm, yeah, but seperate rooms"
"Same room"
"Same room, seperate beds"
"Sure, we can just push them toge..."
"Seperate fucking beds".
"Okay, sure, anything, my dear".
He's paying.
you really haven't gotten bored of this yet?
she said that?
surely you'd get the message?
I thought it was going to be shit
It's absolutely awesome. Went second week in January so no smell. Fluked incredible weather, got a staggering deal on a hotel with views of the main canal and spent all our time on the brilliant public transport boats island hopping around. Was one of the eaiser cities to get away from the tourists as it was so obvious where they would be. After that it is a proper cool, working little city, and bizarely not tacky at all. Highly recommened, but do go miles out of season if you can.
Pretty great
nowhere else really like it.
Obviously it's over-touristed and falling into the ocean, etc, but I had a great time.
don't go in July or August.
I think February is my favourite time to visit Mediterranean cities. No crowds, no sweat, quite often still sunny and dry.
oh ok
someone else said february too.
It's quite expensive,
and I hear that it smells too.
Ah, Venice!
^ discarded Ultravox lyrics
i entered this thread to type "it means nothing to me"
smelly
I have never found venice unduly smelly
There's a bit of a mulchy wiff, but it's not exactly foul and certainly no worse than London in the summer.
perhaps they cleaned it up?
I went back in the mid 80's
I went about five years ago.
Still smelly.
Maybe not so if you compare it to London, but that shouldn't really be a barometer.
it's amazing
don't go in the summer, no need. food and drink isn't too expensive but the sites and getting around can be. if you're pretty young there some decent travelcard system which gives you unlimited vaparetto travel. The Lido is cool (and is a much cheaper and great place to stay).
Vaporetto travel card info here

When I went with work I remember sorting it at the airport in the arrivals hall. very simple.
18euros for three days unlimited travel is excellent value.
There's a nice osteria opposite a pet shop
Absolutely no idea where it is or how to get there, but there can't be that many pet shops in Venice. The place had local wine for less than a euro for a small glass, and ace seafood.
Murano (glass things island) is a tourist trap, don't bother.
