Plenty of people who are proud to be working class but aren't socialists. Equally, it's possible to be a socialist without being working class.
Trying to convince two of my housemates who were discussing this over the breakfast table (yeah, I know...I'm looking for somewhere new) that this is bollocks.
Fuck knows what it's got to do with them anyway, but being teachers (one of them privately educated) from middle class Hampshire backgrounds they are the experts on the proletarian experience.
and my dad is a gardener and hold fairly tory views. So via the Black swan principle the statement is wrong!
You'll find plenty of proudly working class people in the ranks of the BNP and the EDL, just like you'll find plenty of proudly middle class people eschewing communism or anarchy
they were going mental over that and I was trying to explain that middle class has different connotations in America. Then they did their usual class tourism thing.
is made up of working class people who did well out of the post-war settlement, and their kids/grandkids. An increasingly decrepit neoliberalism, however, seems to be despatching a growing number of them from whence they came. Hence the whole 'squeezed middle' thing.
the working class care about massive tv's, blackberrys, getting drunk on a friday and saturday and going to benidorm once a year for a fortnight. they are casual racist, xenophobic, homophobic, royalist and advocate the torture/execution of sex offenders and murderers...generally speaking.
