I have not.
Put the cap, back on.
I'm scottish (and of irish heritage.)
THe rest of my genes are french and spanish. Hence the feverish lasering.
According to him, the Scottish actually did a disproportionate amount of the colonising... The Irish far less so, obviously.
the Scots especially were present in the form of engineers, colonial administrators, lawyers and army/navy officers (as well as enlisted ranks) in numbers many.
Glasgow was 'Second City of Empire'.
Anyway, it truly was a British Empire, not English, but British.
If anything, on a pro-rata basis the Scottish were more heavily involved in it than anyone.
the reason for the 1707 Act of Union was that Scotland went almost bankrupt from making a failed attempt at colonising a chunk of Central America.
(imagine if that had happened!)
given that the union with England was precipitated mainly by a disastrous attempt at colonisation...
we gave them railways!
what would I have to feel guilty about
does it only affect companies or whatever involved in slavery, or do private citizens also pay reparations from time to time?
Didn't you claim to be American under one of your previous usernames? Surprised you don't know more about the situation in your home country
As far as I know my family were all pretty much working-class folk who had no control of anything that happened.
That said, a Hawkins from the South-West invented the triangular slave trade so I might actually be related to one of the worst people in history. Still wouldn't feel guilty though - I didn't do anything so can't see how I would.
I went to some Aboriginal museum in Perth when I was there. They REALLY don't like Whitey...
The treatment of black fellas in WA was (and continues to be) fucking appalling.
I do sometimes feel guilty if I spend money on needless crap rather than donating to charities that can make a big difference. Once I get a job where I'm earning above £18-20k, I will attempt to give ~10% of my income away.
dont think people should feel guilty, do think people should recongnise the role it played in creating wealth and developing our country and that we still benefit from that today and that should inform our attitudes to other countries
-do you identify with a particular country and feel pride, shame etc about things done by people throughout the history in its name? not really, as it's an accident of history.
-Do you feel responsibility for things done in the past by people you're related to by blood? scientists ahoy, but apparently everyone alive today is directly descended from everyone who was alive a hundred or more generations ago and had a sufficient number of children to carry on a bloodline. So, by the time I'm done feeling guilty about great-grand-dad Genghis Khan's sweep across half the known world, I could start on great grand-dad Julius Caesar's wars and move on to great-grand-dad Caligula and so on.
My conscience is clean.
I barely knew 'er
Yeah, often. Probably my favourite, equal with Nearly God.
