More to the point, why are the number keys the opposite way up on calculators compared to phones?
when you're using a calculator the numerical value of the number is important so low numbers are at the bottom and high numbers are at the top. When you're using a phone the numerical value doesn't matter and the numbers could just as easily be letters so they're in order that you write paragraphs etc.
as they're mirror images of each other so they all have the same neighbours (apart from 0).
the contiguity is unaltered
i.e. old cash registers v rotary dial phones with letters on the numbers
