This Telegraph columnist thinks so.
it's taken them long enough to realise how much of a money spinner mail online is
is the editor of spiked, an independent online phenomenon dedicated to raising the horizons of humanity by waging a culture war of words against misanthropy, priggishness, prejudice, luddism, illiberalism and irrationalism in all their ancient and modern forms.
Pretty sure priggishness isn't a thing though
Brendan O'Neill is a big old daftie
I haven't been able to locate a point to what he's typed
Pretty much seems (well is) someone right-wing desperately scrambling for something he can criticise them for to reinforce his world view and not admit how fucked the whole thing is.
"Don't be told what you want / Don't be told what you need", sang Rotten, expressing the core belief of punk – that the vast bulk of the masses, effectively everyone except the punks, had been moulded into a moron by the man."
well this isnt snobbishness.....It is true, many/most modern consumerist desires and values are a construct, they are not 'what very human wants' but are 'what humans have been conditioned to want'.......for primitive tribes who also 'desire' what the west has, that is because the true cost of those objects is not understood (people in the west dont even understand the tue cost and meaning of having them)
A powerful superior weapon, durable bright tough clothes, or simply lightweight durable watertight containers and fire resistant large watertight cooking containers, all have an immediate and undeniable value for primitive human societies, but the enormity of what is needed to produce these is not grasped.
It is easier to see that cars that go faster than 70mph, or goods that are deliberately designed to last for a limited time so that repurchases are necessary are needless and bad in the long term.
but to dismiss the questioning of comsumer values and blind acceptance as snobbery, is so much pandering to controling influences, that it suggests culpable conivance. Therefore perhaps a counter accusation could be levelled at the telegraphs writer of this......that they are evil and anti human, and wish to supress and control humans, like Putin and Nixon and Thatcher
