I often soundtrack my reading of novels with related (largely instrumental) music.
For example, when reading Arthur Conan Doyle's 'The Lost World' I listened to a lot of Jonsi & Alex (the Sigur Ros side project) as its 'mystical' sounds reflected quite nicely the sense of explorative mystery and wide-eyed wonder and adventure contained in the book.
Similarly, I am currently reading 'A Game of Thrones'. I often soundtrack this with Godspeed You! Black Emporer, particularly 'Yanqui UXO'. It's a cliche to say that Godspeed create soundtracks to films that were never made (although Barry from ATP used this very cliche in his opening comments in the programme for the ATP which Godspeed curated), but Yanqui fits the bill perfectly. If Yanqui is the soundtrack to a film which was never made, then Game of Thrones is the story of what that film would have been.
I often don't actually notice the music when i'm reading (much as you often don't notice the music when you watch a film), but it seems to subtly boost the imagination; especially in those fleeting moments when purely by chance the two sync up perfectly.
So, do you soundtrack your reading?
