I'm a big fan of quite a few of his films, Spy Game, Enemy of the State and Man On Fire especially. A real shame
Saw he'd died, but didn't realise it was suicide.
I just looked down his list of films on IMDB. Don't really like any I've seen, though Enemy of the State is pretty enjoyable.
But they all looked amazing.
I just looked on IMDB - 29 projects 'in development'. 68 years old, solid filmmaker, clearly no slouch. Directed 'True Romance'. This is sad.
seems a plausible cause, hell of a workload for a 68 year old. This is Ridley Scott's brother isn't it? Some undenialble backbones of action cinema in there Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop 2, Crimson Tide and yes some underrated gems too.
he's older than my both my parents, and I can't imagine them running around Hollywood producing TV shows, films, directing action movies for weeks on end and planning a sequel to Top Gun.
underrated. There's debate about whether Shane Black's original script is better than the version they ended up filming, but flaws aside, it's a good romp. Bruce Willis as a hungover, unshaven cop, one of the Wayans gives an excellent performance as a has-been, druggie sports hero, Halle Berry as a stripper, loads of witty scenes (and quite a few dumb ones)
Not knowing it was him, great movie, really great.
Always a shock when someone so outwardly successful takes their own life. Doubtless his reasons will be revealed in the coming days. Very sad.
Sad news :(
True Romance is my favourite ever film
I'd forgotten it was one of his. I remember one particular scene where Bowie sat in a doctor's waiting room and aged 50 years in about half-an-hour (haven't we all). That and Catherine Deveuve and Susan Sarandon getting it on - I was 16 years old, what do you expect :)
True Romance...best ever Mexican stand-off?
people with young children who kill themselves are terrible shits?
Who had 12:23 on the first *Suicide is selfish* insensitive comment sweepstake
blade runner was a great film
Just really bizarre eh? Very successful man, lovely wife, young kids. Could have retired and just enjoyed his twilight years. Will be interesting to see what the reasons are.
Also, The Hunger is an amazing looking film. Very arty too. He then went on to do Top Gun which established his style from then on
he had brain cancer.
I don't really know how I feel about his death now. Puts a completely different spin on it. Not convinced killing himself was the noble way to go, but it fits in with his media persona as a gung-ho, vivacious filmmaker.
Hasn't the brain cancer rumour been shot down as rubbish? It certainly hasn't been confirmed yet
probably safe to assume you have no idea what was going through his head and best avoid having an opinion on anything other than what films he made you liked. I'll go for true romance and last boy scout.
