Would the United Kingdom(and Ireland) be considered to be in Western Europe or Northern Europe?
People don't use the terms Northern, Southern or Western Europe.
Glad to help.
This is actually important because you really don't want to be assosciated with those layabouts in Southern Europe.
The UK is safely Herring.
I picked up his new book in a shop at the weekend, wouldn't mind a read of that.
who the SHITTING FUCK is AA Gill?
Knows his way around a put down, but realised very early on that he didn't have the wit, insight or humanity of Clive James, and so just settled for being pithily nasty.
On the plus side, he has punched Piers Moron.
but I think he's written some good stuff, and has an admirable turn of phrase.
He does wear fucking stupid hats though.
He doesn't really seem to understand or love them. At least with Charlie Brooker, his bile is driven by a love of the medium and a love of what can, and should, be achieved with it.
Gill seems to use the subjects of his columns as props on which to hang his pre-written opinion pieces in which he whinges at lefties and the 21st Century, and in which he proclaims his masculinity, like a small-dicked man-child.
He is the embodiment of the mid-1990s.
I think he's a pretty passionate advocate for good cooking, and for all that his columns are pre-prepared think pieces on a random topic (and they usually are 80 per cent random, 20 per cent food), that just seems to be the fashion for restaurant reviews at the moment, and not much different than you'll find from Giles Coren or Jonathan Freedland or any of the other names. And with Gill, I'm usually content to go along with the ride.
As regards TV, I don't read the columns often but have the book (Paper View), and although idiosyncratic, I don't think he's any less useful or interesting than Brooker.
In terms of politics and everything else, he's a tiresome contrarian (the Mary Beard and Clare Balding things were both awful), but a lot of good writers are.
it's like the manchester of europe. amazing.
