They're great, anyone been?
I predict triple figures for this thread. High triple figures.
We stayed in a German war fort, it was one of the best weekends ever.
I wish he'd moved my mum out there and I'd been brought up by all that lovely sea and sand. Sigh.
did you go to the war tunnels/underground hospital?
Reading a book about the German occupation at the moment, interesting little bit of history.
I suppose when it's effectively slave labour building for you then you can really go to town on the decor, huh
I think the hospital had capacity for 600. I'm not sure whether it makes it even worse that it was never used, the construction was a total waste of time, effort and most of all lives.
It would have been better had it not poured with rain almost the whole time. I'd like to go back and see it in nicer conditions, maybe visit Guernsey too.
it's a bit prettier than Jersey (not that Jersey lacks beauty) and St.Peter Port is utterly stunning, definitely far more aesthetically pleasing than St.Helier which looks a bit of a mess in parts.
We were lucky with the weather, am going back there on the 18th as they have a day trip special, £15 return from Poole!
It was ace at the time, but last time I went back it seemed awfully built up and it made me really sad. I REMEMBER WHEN IT WAS ALL POTATO FIELDS etc.
Guernsey has still retained its charm i think, but I don't know it as well as I know Jersey. Ditto Alderney and Sark. My mum works in Guernsey a lot and brings me back kinder milk slices when she remembers <3
The Brelade's bay
The Moulin de lecq
The main market in St. Helier
Want to go back there, they have some sort of deluxe camping option there now...probably costs a fortune, but looks pretty cool:
My parents are on holiday in the IoW at the moment, they seem to be enjoying it.
I couldn't wait to leave!
I'm glad your parents are having a nice time. I'm actually a bit jealous. I went back for a few days in may when the weather was nice and it was rather lovely.
when they flirted with Nazi imagery. Very edgey.
i just got pissed up with the bride's mates all night because most of my old school friends aren't as interesting as hot girls. they got divorced after 6 months.
What went wrong?
Also, sub-thread: Is it acceptable to buy far cheaper presents when you go to a friend's second marriage on the basis that their track record of success isn't great?
i don't really know what the catalyst for it was but the bottom line was that she let other guys wave their penus inside her.
my cousin also got married then divorced within 9 months and that was after a £50k wedding. i had great fun at that wedding. i put a banana inside a girl
I want to visit some of the smaller British Islands - Alderney, Scilly for example. Sounds like a nice sedate place to relax.
Alderney seems intriguing, you can get there pretty easily from Guernsey. For some reason, Sark and Herm appeal more, particularly Sark which has only just abandoned feudalism!
but they have a similar appeal, same with even the larger British islands such as Mann or Wight.
Which I think will be a really interesting experience. Such a compact patch, yet it will have to be really comprehensive. I bet island life gets really political.
Big local story at the minute about a brazen (but brilliant) fraud. Lagan Construction (big island construction firm) were owed £2.6M for work they had carried out on the island's new airport. Some blagger wrote to the States of Guernsey finance minister on Lagan Construction headed paper and informed him that they had changed their account number and sort code and could the sum owed be paid into the new account instead.
Finance minister promptly arranges for £2.6M to be paid into the account. A few days later someone from Lagan rings up and asks when they are going to get paid....Errrrrm....SHIT.
Really, really posh do. My cousin married well. Lovely place, would like to go back one day.
Terrifying crossing on the way back. 40 foot waves.
It's a bit better on a proper ferry, but the journey takes longer.
Pretty girls in the Channel Islands, wouldn't mind marrying one myself.
Had to dock in Poole on the way back though due to the roughness
As such, we go over a few times a year to visit family and friends. Lovely places to visit but no way could I imagine living over - super claustrophobic.
As others have said, Guernsey has managed to retain its sleepy charm better than Jersey. Best place on Guernsey to visit is Victor Hugo's house (owned by the city of Paris fact fans). They also have a go kart track with an 11-a-side football pitch in the middle.
she had a little womble display in her living room window.
Great place. Lovely. Always enjoy going back to see friends and family.
the former was nice, the latter was like a weird theme park
Not sure I'd want to live there though. Insular, elitist and with a long history of corruption that goes right up to the top.
I like Jersey and Guernsey very much (can never remember the other one). I was offered a job in Jersdey quite recently but turned it down because I couldn't see me fitting in there long term, or being remotely culturally satisfied in such a parochial and limited setting.
...of Monday to Friday workers on the islands which is not a bad compromise. A fair few folk got proper stranded during ash cloud though.
some people are campaigning for the introduction of party politics, I think they're going to have a long battle with that.
gonna have to up my game
Great place to grow up, but far too small, insular and inbred as you reach early adulthood. The people that never leave just aren't right in the head.
Great beaches, I miss that. London lacks a beach.
Apparently there is (was) a big scene of people driving souped up cars and taking legal highs, as illegal highs are too hard to get hold of. The program was full of proper dickheads, 18 year olds with bodykits on their cars hanging out in car parks with 15 year old girls smoking bath salts.
The place went nuts for mephedrone for a while.
Surprisingly high amount of heroin addicts, more than 1% of the population.
Also st helier has more bookies per sq km than anywhere else in Britain. Nice place.
Jerseyman exiled in London
Also, I like your username...I'm guessing it's a Flashman reference.
to raise a family, but because of my girlfriends line of work, I don't think it would be possible.
the username is indeed a reference to Flashman.
but something appears to have gone wrong as I don't think it's been opened :(
it is exactly how I imagine the 1950s to have been, mostly in a good way (picturesque, polite, etc etc) but I did get into a disproportionately high number of conversations with people who were a bit racist.
I also didn't really realise how south it was, had much more of a Southern European climate than I was expecting, was nice.
