according to an announcement from Random House earlier this afternoon.
Why has it suddenlay caught on? Surely there have been erotic novels before? Seems like EVERY bloody woman of any age is buying it!
...a straight guy!
have to admit I didn't see that coming.
ffs what's wrong with everyone today?
fucking hell people.
Hah, no it was the should of been thread. But i see you went nuclear in that too :D *hi-5's*
Maybe it's only obvious if you've met him.
Like Twilight spawned hundreds of similar shitty teen vampire books, this is going to do exactly the same thing. Expect to be bombarded with shit Channel 5 late night erotica in book form.
because I assume it caused someone to reprint Anno Dracula. Good book, involving vampires, and I probably wouldn't have picked it up otherwise.
They just changed the names and jigged it about so it could be released.
which is kind of surprising.
that a raunchy can almost pass for cultured reading, regardless of quality.
ffs I've been missing out words all over the place today.
It sold in 5 minutes. I weep.
I worked in one for about two years while at uni and any Dan Brown or Atkins Diet books got thrown in the recycle because we got so many and couldn't shift any of them.
but this works.
One in ten people in the country?
ONE IN FIVE WOMEN IN THE COUNTRY BOUGHT THIS BOOK??
So divide by three... still bad, but not so bad...
that's for 50 Shades of Grey according to the Random House thing I read earlier. The all time best selling book in UK. 5 million in the UK 14 world wide.
it's ABSOLUTELY SHIT.
it's not just "oh it's so bad it's good". It's just absolutely terrible.
Y'know... so I've heard...
there even used to be some well written challenging ones. But recently there have been 'misery novels' instead, so there is a whole generation of readers that hasnt read trash about being dominated
because it's heavily discounted absolutely everywhere. I've never seen it on sale for more than £4 or not in a 2 for 3 offer with the other two.
3 for 2
2 for 3 would be a really shit offer, but I WOULDN'T PUT IT PAST ANYONE PAYING MONEY FOR THIS TRIPE
but which ones?
female Olympians look hot and bothered.
yeah, we know what's going on.
and the format of the books.
Whilst perhaps the target market is fairly different I remember IQ84, only being released as a hardback at first and then only giving you the option to purchase the first two volumes combined or the final book.
Compared to 50 shades which was immediately released as a paperback and split into three relatively cheap books.
Kinda curious with these things like the Dan brown and Twilight films to see what they actually involve....but am content to miss them.
Also, triumph of marketing or genuine interest in the novel?
From what I can gather the content is absolute bollocks. I have it on PDF but can't bring myself to read it. DM if you want a copy.
I got the impression this was a word of mouth thing?
Total dross. Completely unreadable.
it is pure shite. and far too long (THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID ETC). something like 80 references to her 'inner goddess' and around 200 (i counted. using kindle search) exclamations of 'holy shit!', 'holy crap!' etc.
at least i didn't pay for it.
I'm glad I don't work in a book shop any more. Although I'd like to know who buys this.
I saw someone reading this on a ferry yesterday. I could see they were reading an English Language book, edged closer to try and make out the words on the cover. Turns out it was this. She was about 35. I guess holiday reading has bumped the sales.
pretty sure the highway code is still no 1
knew I should have added more grot
She did an English Lit degree but since has shunned "high" literature and is very much into "shite" literature now. Oddly she actually got bored of the frequent sex scenes. I have read them, they are relentless. She was in it for the story apparently. I am dubious, but then she hasn't been too keen on bondage recently.
''Comes like a spin cycle''
Truly erotica for housewives.
there comes a point where the constant belittling of people for liking something gets more tedious than the subject matter itself.
Looking at it at base level, it's probably a good thing that significant numbers of people who wouldn't normally read books are doing so.
There will be some knock-on effect as well, as there always is. I'm sure many of us read stuff during our teens that we can now look back on and appreciate was shite, but it led us on to different authors and books.
More people reading and buying more books = a good thing.
I couldn't really give two hoots about what people choose to read in their spare time. What makes me cringe, however, about the whole torrid thing is the overtly knowing nudgenudgewinkwink-ness on the part of those reading it, who seem to love to crow on about it, as if they've only just discovered their hymens. I find that really really embarrassing.
Anyway, this made me laugh a bit- http://twitpic.com/a9dtwc
ridiculously bored of hearing about 50 Shades of Grey?
EVERY SINGLE ONE comments on it (it's by the till). Yes. FUCK OFF.
