Daily Olympic Thread - Day 10 (Monday 6th August)
Oh. No one has started a daily thread yet. What are you guys up to? Who's going to an event? What will you be watching on TV? I've got the evening session of the athletics with my parents. I'll get to see the finals for the men's 400m hurdles and flat as well as the 100m men's medals ceremony. Also, as a 36 year old I'm very much looking forward to photos with my mum and dad at the Olympic park and stadium. Whatever you guy are doing or watching, HAVE FUN!!!

Off to the stadium for this evenings athletics too
Quite excited
Volleyball tonight
Top-ranked USA vs bottom-ranked Tunisia, followed by Brazil v Germany. After all the excitement over the weekend, this seems a bit of a low key affair.
I absolutely love volleyball now. I never watched live or on TV
before the Olympics. I went the women's last week (where I saw the British women beat the Algerian women at 00:45am) and the men's the day after, where the British men didn't do so well. I've got the women's semi on Thursday and bronze medal match on Saturday afternoon. The excitement of volleyball is a revelation to me.
I'm sure it'll be fun
But if Russia beat Serbia this afternoon, then both games are irrelevant, as USA, Brazil, Russia and Germany will have already qualified for the quarter-finals by the time my matches are being played.
And Russia just won
Oh well
You've got the women's semi? I'm pretty sure they don't want it.
Fnarr fnarr.
So made up about the tennis final (well, one of them)
not really sure what's left this week. Looking forward to some boxing and wrestling I guess.
Enough of your domestic situation, what about Olympic sports?
Hmmmm, I put that in as a set up, was hoping for something better than that though Theo
It's Monday morning.
That's the best we can expect.
If you were hoping for something homoerotic I'm sure someone else can give you one...and then they'll give you a double-entendre about the boxing and wresting too. (BADOOM-TSSCH!)
shut up theo
:')
Laugh it up, pinhead.
hockey boys recovered from 3-0 against Australia
to draw 3-3.
LOLstralia?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/19141731
Australia are having a right shitter of an Olympics so far
Have they got some events coming up that they plan on dominating or are they just not doing very well?
In other news, Hungary clinging on in 10th. GO TEAM MAGYAR!
they should dominate hockey
world number one.
They've got the lady whose name I've forget who is very good at the hurdles.
Not doing so well
They'd have expected golds in Swimming and rowing and would probably be hoping for something in the velodrome too.

:D
I totally love our male gymnasts. He took it really well yesterday, didn't he? And he looks like Tybalt.
I liked it when Lineker was interviewing the gymnasts
and called the Bronze medal guy 'Max Hastings'.
I knew he said it!
I heard it yesterday and was like '....nah, surely not'
gary linekar is fucking rubbish.
I love him.
No, he's (usually) very good
Balding and Logan are good too. It's a shame so many of the other decent hosts have schlepped off to other channels so we're left with the dregs like Inverdale (why does no-one else find him as embarrassing as I do? He's like fucking Partridge but with no jokes).
NO WAY.
I love Inverdale! Actually I think all of the presenters/commentators have been pretty good! Surprised that I really like Matt Baker. And obviously a hat tip to Balding.
The man's a preening fool. Should be presenting the lunchtime news on Look North.
When they showed the studio reaction to Mo Farah winning gold, and the pundits were all going loopy and he just sat spinning back and forth in his wheely chair staring at his knees like a confused old man in a care home, jeez. Get rid.
You and I are in agreement on Inverdale.
The man is just awful.
balding has been outstanding
she's great
she seems to get proper random sports as well.
So like, Porter is sort of American?
No Ennis in the individual hurdles :(

back in work today after 9 sessions (8 sports) in 9 days
pretty glad i really went for those tickets at the earliest opportunity
it's been absolutely incredible
Which was the best event you went to? I saw the athletics last
Friday morning. That was very special and there was a lovely atmosphere. The best in terms of sport was staying at Earls Court until 00:45am watching Women GB beat the Algerians.
difficult to rank, but here goes
1) Handball
2) Canoe Slalom
3) Fencing
4) Archery
5) Hockey
6) Football (Uru-Sen, GB-UAE)
7) Volleyball
8) Table Tennis
9) Football (Gab-S.Kor)
handball's a fantastically entertaining sport to watch, and the canoe slalom was the only medal i saw, so it was pretty cool too. kinda want to take up most of these sports now
Shut up Brusma.
bit unnecessary
Just to irritate people. I saw 10 events last week and have 6 more
to go. I was at the Gabon-South Korea match too. Neither team could hit a cow's arse with a banjo but nice family atmosphere.
that match was pretty much the worst match i've ever seen
Only 16 events?
Not impressed.
Yeah - but you come across as joyously enthusiastic about it all.
Brusma's just being a bit smug.
sigh
Pretty damn good Olympic weekend
The hurdles was also a plan B in case of a total failure in the heptathlon.
I was there last Friday when she destroyed the field in the 100m hurdles, as well as the Beiijing winning time. I think she would have easily won a silver in the hurdles if she took part. It's understandable that she's not though.
It's a shame that being the greatest sailing Olympian of all time
isn't enough to make you interesting.
nah, he seems like a cool cat
Does anyone have any tips for watching free events?
I'm going up to Wembley tomorrow for the football semi, it's a 5pm start so I'd like to 'soak up the atmosphere' somewhere first.
Has anyone been to the big screens in Hyde Park, Victoria Park etc? are they any good.
It's also the men's triathlon tomorrow (also in and around Hyde Park), so might go watch that. Did anyone watch the women's one the other day and have any tips on the best place to watch from.
thanks guys, your site is really helping me a lot
do you know which team are playing?
Am also going. Heading to the southampton arms beforehand.
it's Japan vs Mexico
balls!
what a great weekend of sporting greatness.
i was so gutted about Becky Addlington on friday tho. i really wanted her to win. the cycling slightly made up for it.
saturday just seemed amazing. mo farah is brilliant at running long distance. not too sure the long jump final was that good but we won it so who cares? Jennis, lovely stuff.
the 100m was also brilliant, although i'm annoyed gatlin came 3rd. i wanted him to false start and do something really petulant.
John Inverdale.
When Rutherford had won gold
but took his last jump anyway to show what a badass he is. Got the crowd to clap him. Did that ridiculous bit of posing at the beginning, sprints down the track...and completely spoons it up. AND THEN raises his arms like he's the fucking daddy. What a prick.
he came across quite well in the interviews
it's just his posturing during the event that made him look a bit of a dilbert
i can't look at him without thinking of Barney from How I Met Your Mother
Or even Doogie Howser if you're over 30.
Yeah, I almost warmed to him. A bit.
Foster-Hilton
can tantrum.
Was gutted for Gay and Rooney last night
Poor fuckers.
There's been lots of really gutted Silver medal winners eh? I hope they all wake up in a few days time and think, 'fuck me that's cool'.
I've always thought the gulf in class between very good and world class
400m metre runners is incredible. Guys running sub-45 like it was a walk in the park, ffs.
Big fan of Martyn.
Ed Moses probably doesn't get mentioned too often in a "who's
the best Olympian" conversation. He won two golds, in 1976 and 1984. He would have won in 1980 if it wasn't for the US boycott but what an amazing athlete. He didn't lose a 400m hurdles race in 10 years. Unbelieveable.
So much this
ed Moses
total hero
nope. cos coming second isnt winning.
apart from in various points based events
where you can come 2nd or lower and still win overall
I don't know why this is making me laugh so much.
But it is.
Lisa Norden, the Swede who won the silver in the women's triathlon
- really feel for her, all that effort to come second in the exactly the same time
she put a brave face on it but that's gonna follow her like a shadow for the rest of her life
Dennis was not happy
Dennis?
It'll be alright on the night 37
I read this quote in a Sydney Morning Herald article I read the other day
>>In explaining why silver medallists often look less happy than those who win bronze, American philosopher William James wrote, more than 100 years ago: 'So we have the paradox of a man shamed to death because he is only the second pugilist or the second oarsman in the world. That he is able to beat the whole population of the globe minus one is nothing; he has ‘pitted’ himself to beat that one; and as long as he doesn’t do that nothing else counts.'<<

800m
looks an absolutely brutal discipline.
Hardest of all the track events as far as I'm concerned
Much too far to be considered a sprint, but you've still basically got to be balls out for the whole thing. 1500m is much more akin to the long distance races in terms of rhythm.
world record equates to roughly 12.625 per 100 metres
i mean, serious?
Agreed with you btw.
easy.
Not sure which I enjoyed more yesterday
Colin Jacksons over excitement or Michael Johnson's lack of.
so guys
where are we likely to get our other medals in the T&F? Phillips is probably mental, so we can write him off. anyone else? 4by100 mens? dunno......
Dai Greene tonight.
maybe. If he gets his act together.
Grabarz might get one in the high jump, but it's a big might.
Farah in the 5,000m.
Greene looked fucking dogshit the other day
bad day at the office
he won't make that mistake again tonight (I hope)
actually, this Rimmer cat just about to start is pretty decent, no?
No
shit i thought he hadnt qualified?!
qualified as one of the two fastest losers
and somehow got drawn in lane three for the final :S
Does we actually stand any chance in the women's pole vault?
I haven't checked for myself, but I read something about our entry having the 4th largest vault of all time, but likely only a silver or bronze hope.
Yeah she was vaulting well at the session I saw
Odowu maybe, if he's fit?
Does we?
Yeah blud.
SUB-THREAD - Obvious drug-assisted records
When do you think the IOC will stop officially backing a whole bunch of Eastern European cold war records ? Specifically the women's records
I mean really
Women's 400m - Marita Koch 46.70s East Germany 1985
Women's 800m - Jarmila KratochvÃlová 1.53.28 Czech 1983
these records are NEVER going to beaten fairly and clearly they're not fair records
what to do?
they will get beaten, dont worry.
apparently justin gatlins time last night was the same as ben johnsons in 1988! nice somparison too...
nah man
How will anyone beat those two records?
and no one has got close to Shot put, javelin and relay times set by eastern european women in the 80s
*discuss , not javelin
as an example
the top ten women discuss throwers of all time
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discus_throw#Women
not yet, but they will.
oh come on, really?
Marita Koch's 400m WR is 3 WHOLE SECONDS faster then Christine Ohuruogu ran last night
and?
don't you think these series of Eastern European athletes' records are suspicious?
of course they are!
i'm just saying that they will eventually get beaten.
but how long will the IOC back them before that happens?
40 years, 50, 75, 100 ??
they're dodgy as fuck, not sure they should be recognised
it will never be solved, so if you're an athlete, you need to forget about it.
they never thought the marathon would be done in under 2 hours, but it blatantly is about to happen.
Also
Maria Mutola DOMINATED women's 800m running for YEARS and yet her personal best is barely within 2 whole seconds of KratochvÃlová's WR
and?
someone will beat them eventually.
not without cheating
Fly-cam
has this been discussed? did anyone see that fly on the camera that hovers above the stadium? it was there for the whole evening. give it a wipe, guys.
quite enjoyed the helicopter cam thing
I enjoyed it.
I'm not sure it's a fly.
At first I thought i did but it's been there for too long. Could be a bit of fluff.
looked like a fly caught in a spider's web
Can someone with BBC HD please confirm this?
poor that from RImmer
The female shot putters are genuinely quite scary.

terrifying...
http://www.standard.co.uk/incoming/article7972949.ece/ALTERNATES/w620/Zoe+Smith.jpg
So they're saying Team GB are ahead of schedule in terms of possible medal hopes
What have we got left.
I'm thinking:
3 more in track cycling (Pendleton, Kenny, Men's Kierin) and maybe Trott in the Omnium. I think we stand a chance of winning something for the horsing around stuff, don't we?
Guess we've given ourselves a chance in the boxing too with a few folks doing well. Still in the hockey too, aren't we?
Outside chances of Daley in diving, Odowu in triple jump and Bleasdale in Pole vault.
That's about it, right?
there are the two Brownlees in the Triathlon tomorrow
but the triathlon seems like one of those lottery events where literally any of them can win
dressage, team and individual.
didnt we win the modern pentathalon last time?
Should be on for something in Pentathlon, yes.
something in the open water events?
that young chap who throws either the discus or the shot (not sure which)
Farah in the 5000 as well.
Robbie Grabarz - High Jump Gold hope
Mo Farah in 5000?
Maybe another chance of a sailing medal, Beth Tweddle on uneven bars later...
I dunno, there's plenty of hopefuls left I think.
BMX
More in the sailing somewhere, surely?
steve cram really doesnt trust some athletes does he?
no
he was very cynical when some Algerian blasted away yesterday. not so keen on this
wasn't just Cram though
the Swedish commentary team were highly suspicious of that guy too <<Well, this is completely unexpected. He's never shown that kind of form before. We're all very ...erm... surprised to see that>>
was about the gist with very cynical undertones
they had Alan Wells on the round up show last night
and he made some deal about the fact that he was the last white man to win the 100m. true fact, but it came across as borderline racism, or something. plus, and lets be honest, if the americans were there he would have struggled to get bronze
did you watch the programme a few years ago about race and athletes?
fronted by colin jackson. basically it has nothing to do with race, just racing.
(see what i did there)
at this time of year i remember how good my brendan foster impression is.
nice run from Dobrisky (sp)
looked smooth
she has a silly voice
She comes across as a nice girl too. Best of luck to her.
GO WEIGHTMAN!!!!
Excellent. She made the semi-finals.
What happened to Lemaitre (sp?) the French 100m runner?
didn't see him anywhere.
he pussied out and decided to the 200m only.
really?
hmm interesting
really.
Him and his coach realized that he had no chance of a medal
in the 100m and so they chose to concentrate on the 200m.
where he will definitely win...
why not, man?
Bolt is not 100% fit. so why not..
he's so unfit that he ran the second fastest time ever last night.
there is a huge difference between 100 metres and 200
around 100 metres, in fact. according to the guys in the know, Bolt isn't 100%. just saying, man
yeah
thing is, Bolt is BETTER at 200 than 100
Lemaître might get a medal though
true, but APPARENTLY Bolt isn't fit!
please buy into this
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/social/4366017#r6921254
So last night we measured out 10 meters
and tried to run it in 10 seconds. I'm going to Rio.
10m in 10 seconds? impressive.
impossible.
1second
I mean one second.
was there a drink at the end of the line?
You're on fire today...
Lemaitre has no chance of a bronze in the 100m but could
scrap a bronze in the 200m.
Okoye not gonna go through?
Throwing now...
YES!
Brilliant throw!!
that's SUPERB!!!1!!
chuck that fucking frisby
:D
NZ smashing Australia in the medals table.
me and you, man
NZ currently have more medals than Australia
it doesn't get much better than that
Reggie Yates
pretty sure you don't need those glasses.
putting on his posh voice for the sport.
hopefully shifting into his fake rude boy accent when he interviews people under the age of 25.
bell end.
DID YOU KNOW:
Reggie Yates is the voice of Rasta Mouse.
You're right. I had to check on wiki just in case you were having me
on. Admitted, it would be an odd thing to fib about.
some french coach questioning team GB in the cycling
the women, specifically. apparently, we're so much better than anyone else and therefore, we must have some secret technology or some shit. pretty pathetic, guys
Pretty sure she was talking about doping
maybe, man
I was cooking a stir-fry at the time and it was making quite a racket, so I could have mis-heard
*at the time of radio broadcast
haha
FUCK YOU, FRENCH LADY.
stop it, come on. we're bossing something for once in our mediocre recent Olympic history. stop being such a bitter.
feh, the bbc were implying it with that chinese swimmer wot swam fast
come on Brabanat
hurry up!
*brabant
get's into the final
*brabants
Volleyball enq:
why do each team have one guy in a different coloured shirt?
Libero
Defensive specialist who doesn't take part in the rotation of players
they definitely getted subbed from time to time.
Libero doesn't take part in rotation
when players move positions on court. Subbing is different.
aha.
Watch out guys
Australia are about to double their gold medal tally thanks to the sailing.
*something about only winning events where you can have a good sit down*
WRASTLING!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LijCcl_9VeA
the last thirty seconds of each round
are so tinged with homoerotic energy.
pretty annoying to read people on here talk about old east german records
and doping.
how about the americans? all of the mens 400m top ten are american- 2 from 1992, 2 from '88, 2 from '68.
top 3 men 400m hurdles american, all over 20 years ago, but people say ed moses is one of the greatest olympians here.
top 3 men long jump all american, all over 20 years ago.
eastern europe,
i mean.
Well, Ed Moses had the 13 step stride pattern
which gave him such an edge
and as for the American sprint domination there is undoubtedly some suspicion but the time progression and distribution is not nearly as marked as the Eastern European females
and long jump is a curious one
so many factors to take into account - wind, altitude, run up etc. plus I think that for a long time long jump was certainly up there with 100m as a blue riband event (and notably Carl Lewis & Jesse Owens were Olympic champions at both) whereas now it's far more lucrative for sprinters to concentrate on the track
certainly the USA have and have had dopers but it's harder to separate their absolute top class facilities and training from their dominance than say Romania & Czechoslovakia in the mid 80s
The 100m is annoying
all those really crap character poses they do when they're being announced. very macho. very forced. the american guy who walked ten paces back so he could walk towards the camera as it moved over to him in perfect time! jeez what a prick.
justin gatlin.
a renowned prick.
the do all seem very forced except for bolt.
its silly.
I like the guy who pretended to be getting focused and was just staring at his feet
and then he looks up and goes 'rrrrrraugh'.
(Actually, I liked it when he did it in the heats, not so much when he did it again in the final)
nah he's just as forced as all of them.
the other Jamaican guy who does the scary monster thing? fuck me.
only one of them, another american i think, just gave a big grin and a wave like he was genuinely happy to be there.
its because his nickname is the beast.
oh that's ok then
did he come up with that himself?
it's not WWF forfucksake
They're the fastest men in the world.
I say they can call themselves whatever they want.
Love
Amazing Lauren
nah fuck that

Ryan Bailey is the smiley American
He looks like he should be in Beverly Hills Cop
bit racist.
I bloody love the theatre of it all.
Blake espesh. Or 'the Beast', should I say.
Yeah everyone should just stand there and politely smile when they're announced
jfc
why should the 100m athletes be any different from anyone else?
some kind of genuineness would be nice is all.
with bolt, its genuine.
he's the fastest so they all try and copy him cos they think it will make them faster/make the crowd like them more. they're wrong of course.
its better than how they all used to be i.e. trying to be all macho. gatlins a relic.
or they could just, y'know, focus on running as fast as they can
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&NR=1&v=bHMEvmoNQSY
Its obviously a way of psyching themselves up and removing the nerves
Similar to Rutherford's little finger wiggle thing and Blanka Vlasic's antics (unfortunately not in London)
You can hardly accuse Bolt of not being focused.
Man marries boat?

he deserves that medal. his body is amaze.
brb, just gonna do some pull ups.

nice gold for Brazil
probably the country, behind GB obvs, that I keep an eye out for
Why, in the Olympics, does Blue Riband mean 'good'
when in the biscuit world it means 'poor'?
name a better 'elevenses' biscuit?
and don't say Club

too poor to afford proper biscuits?

good news steve cram,

and in bizarre circumstances
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/19152117
I don't get why he 'wasn't trying'?
saving his energy for the 1500m
presumably
Yeah but surely that should be allowed
Espesh as he wanted to be withdrawn?
Not that I care. He seems a total belm.
I don't get why he didn't just withdraw from the race before it started.
Surely he could've done that?
Think they missed the deadline or sutin.
^ this.
but to be honest, if i was the guy that got replaced because of this guy, i'd be fucking fuming.
Bringing the sport into disrepute and all that?
To be honest it doesn't really matter - much like those badminton teams that got disqualified, whether you agree or not you've gotta respect the rules as they're set out.
espesh
*Sideshow Bob shudder*
Totes annoying, right?
Australia have a nailed on gold in the sailing
and he still tried to capsize and ruin it :D
russian girl just had a stinker
extra spin, or some shit. calm down, love
Her feet caught the low bar
So she lost momentum and had to take the extra swing.
What's the deal with this Chinese bloke hovering under the bars?
If she falls there's a crashmat to save her. That's what it's for. None of the others've needed someone next to them.
Japan beating China in the hockey 1-0 with 35 seconds left
this should see GB through to the quarters.
Tweddle had a wobble there on the landing
oh no
So, she'll be silver, bronze or fourth
... looks like that Russian was pretty good. I think it'll be bronze or fourth. Fingers crossed everyone.
Oh damn, there are two more to go
I thought there was only one. So it'll be bronze, fourth or fifth. Eeek...
Silver!
Hope she can hang on to that position.... doubt it though
In bronze with just Gabby Douglas to go
So it's bronze or fourth. Gabby Douglas won gold the other day...
Go on Tweddle
Tweddle gonna do well to get a medal, here
FiveLive reckon she's got the bronze
C'mon!
So glad for the girl.
Good things come to those who wait. And nice to see a few fairytales coming true these games...
Pleased for her
but also a bit gutted as she was in touching distance of a gold.
might have a bronze!
Confirmed!
Yay Beth.
Women's gymnastics does have a bit of a whiff of child abuse about it
that's a paddlin'
that'll do
Bronze
Nick Skelton in the horse stuff
broke his neck a few years back. had his hip replaced last year. first Olympics in 88.
just did a clear round and the fastest, to boot
great stuff
fuck
this Irish girl is absolute nails
The noise when Katie Taylor won was something else
And reinforced my theory about once you have a critical mass of Irish people in one place it becomes statistically impossible for them not to start singing OLE OLE OLE
Wait, someone must have mentioned Lochte's USA grills before?
How have I missed this?

Incredible! $25k apparently!
doesnt braces mean an athlete is on steroids?
how many fucking times have mr and mrs tweddle been on sodding TV today?!
fuck off!
He's had a lovely week.
Done some DIY. Relaxed a bit. Lovely stuff.
And his Mum, who's 85, has just got tickets!
Pretty pleased for her.
Our first female gymnastics medal ever?
Blimey.
i'm watching the gymnastics
it's awful, but a gold medal is definitely on. the saudi arabia team are a bit of a fairy-tale story - that is, they're all princes. makes our bunch look like TOWIE.
not any more§
i meant equestrian!
the gymnnastics was great.
nice stuff in the horse
looking good for GOLD!
*equestrian
boom
that ukrainian dude is a dude
Brazlian chap just had a mare in the showjumping
hitting practically every fence, then one fell down just before he reached it. Excellent stuff.
Had a mare
Keeny riding in his first heat of the semi of the individual sprint
Business end of the competition.
kenny wins easily
what time is the final, Rich?
need to get an afternoon nap in, ideally
17.43
Will be Kenny v Bauge with Bauge winning me thinks. But it'll be a bloody good final as Kenny is in brilliant form.
I think Kenny will pip him
Bauge isn't as imperious as he has been and Kenny's 10.03 was astronomical.
I hope he does it
But bauge has had the beating of him recently and looks as though he has so much more to give. It'll be fucking close though. Hopefully they'll chuck a couple of trackstands in too.
turn's out the Saudi's have chucked fucking £40 odd million in the equestrian events
the Olympic dream, eh
What do you mean?
As in they've bought the judges? Or as opposed to the billions that we've pumped into sport?
not sure we've pumped in billions
but yeah, you're right.
it's definitely billions
if we're including infrastructure, then yes
but we're not
aren't we?
not in this argument.
Saudi's bought all the best horses, apparently. this was the point I was trying to make
That's why I asked the question, innit.
Should've just said that straight out, bro :)
Regardless of infrastructure
It's still billions. Unless we're counting, y'know, building a stables or something as infrastructure, in which case we'd be comparing like for like.
shut up you bell ends and watch the cycling.
fuck that, man
the horse stuff is where it's at. we're close to gold here...
So's Jason Kenny
17.43, man
that's light years away
i think you'll find the Manchester velodrome wasn't paid for in goodwill.

Trott leading the first round of the omnium by 0.001 seconds
Definition of close!
One thousandth of a second
Ridiculous.
*perfectly judged
TROTTING INTO FIRST
(I'm sorry)
Kenny eases through to the final
Fuck me there was almost a huge crash mind!
Skelton does a clean round
nice
I never thought I'd be watching a horse jump over tower bridge.
dutch a wee bit slower
Kenny - Bauge final
Perkins - Nicholas Phillip bronze race
Vicky pendelton up now in the ladies sprint quaters
horsey crowd desperately trying not to cheer when someone else fucks up.
the cycling coverage has been so confusing.
i have no idea when it is and isnt live.
Are you watching it on iplayer?
TV, internet, red button, whereever.
they just seem to be randomly showing bits in no particular order. i'm getting annoyed. they should have given the cycling to ITV4.
If its the red button then
that should be the live feed. Gone mens sprint round 1, omnium round 1, mens sprint round 2, ladies sprint round 1 so far.
Are you just getting confused
by the fact that they keep switching event?
The organisers I mean, not the TV?
the TV coverage.
a clean round in the horse and we get gold here
turn over, you cycling benders!!!1!
GOLD
TEAM GOLD IN THE HORSE
horsey GOLD!
http://i49.tinypic.com/317cc37.jpg

YYYYYEEEESSSS YOU HORSEY BASTARDS
Well done you posh sods!
I'm so tired I can't keep my eyes open
I keep falling asleep even with my eyes open
jake humphrey to mark cavendish:
'how big is the gaping hole in your trophy cabinet with no olympic medal?'
shut up you complete and total bell end. what the fuck have you ever won? cavendish is fucking immense.
yeah, we get it
you don't like Humphrey
Shit on the track when it mattered though
Only ever competed in the maddison.
oh come on.
that madison he won in the worlds was amazing too.
one of my favourite sporting memories.
Sorry
can't do this trolling thing as well as kik can. Just don't understand why a) the BBC have him as a track cycling pundit when he clearly knows sod all about a lot of the disciplines and b) I think he's fucking boring to listen to.
i really dont understand this cycling thing
why dont they just race properlly
This is like the cycling version of the tarck heptathalon
the points race is won by the rider with the most points accrued during the race. a sprint lap every 10 laps worth 5 points for 1st, 4 for 2nd, 3 for 3rd, 2 for 4th and 1 for 5th. If you gain a lap on the field that's worth 20 points. Hence why they try to ride away from each other all the time.
everyone ganging up on us.
as bloody usual.
I know
thats why cavendish and wiggins madison was so good.
Trott is being marked heavily
by the rest of the field. She needs to try a break soon.
i hate these tactics.
its like chelsea defending for 90 mins. go for the win you bell ends!
Trott might be tenth now in the standings
umm, the elimination race will be hard
keeping it interesting.
3rd overall in the omnium
looking promising. She just needs to perform well in the other two endurance races.
Jesus Christ
Its that bloody confusing scratch race thing again
Trott 3rd?
not sure how that works....
1 point for first in the flying lap tt
10 points for 10th in points = 11
that guy on the telly
with Cav and Jake. is he something to do with American cycling? I SWEAR I saw him holding one of the american bikes the other day?
Jamie Staff
yep, he coaches the 'mirkins now. Ex-GB cyclist.
no it's that guy off the gadget show
this Trinidad guy looked good the other day
great finish from Perkins
Quality stuff all round
The Trinidadian will be good in a couple of seasons.
fuck
this french guy is HUGE
long sprint long sprint.
Fuck that's some speed down the back straight!
That was superb from Kenny
literally
what horsepower are these chaps putting in on the sprints?
are they more powerful than a horse?
minature - undoubtedly
shire - not convinced
Over 1000 watts
(I have no idea what that means though). I average 265 watts on a commute.
>1.34 horses
Now I know
from this day we are all better people
KENNY!
BOOM!
silly question of the day
get ready....is it illegal to put your foot/feet down in the sprint, for example?
a bit like that game burning off, the one we all clearly played as kids
*when they're mucking about at the start
Well they're using clipless pedals and cleats and then are strapped in to the pedals
so they'd have to stop, undo the straps and unclip the pedals, so probably not. They do this instead...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcEF2GyBR_Q
its not a red traffic light guys
6 minutes
try the lights at picaddilly circus mate.
feels like about 20 mins at times.
How about just uncliping?
that was incredible
such balance. such poise. magnificent stuff
Poor tactics from the belarussian
BBC commentator earlier
"the 6-event omnium is basically the cycling equivalent of the decathalon".
errrr...
the hextathalon.
Sextathalon
Has quite a ring to it
Mears looked strong
cycling commentator now refferring to women as men.
come on Kenny
look at the size difference between these two
C'mon Kenny
Amazing ride!
Amazing from Kenny
GET IN
brilliant celebrations from the coach guy
Fucking love the sprint!
Good lad.
Doing Farnworth proud! ;D
Dont get that cycling, what is with the slow bit?
tactics and cat and mouse for position.
Surely they should just bomb it around constantly, easy World Record
If they did that...
The leader would do a lot more work than the follower due to air resistance and then would tire quicker (hence why the team sprint take turns at being leader) so then the follower could easily overtake in the final lap having more energy left, which is why it's a lot more tactical than just bombing it round
#tatical mouse
That was exciting
he's a grasshopper!
KING KENNY!
http://i49.tinypic.com/317cc37.jpg
GB cycling team
has more gold medals than Australia overall and would sit in the top 10 in the medal table. great stat!
ELIMINATION RACE!!!!!
I missed the men's one. This is awesome.
Best race
to ride on the track. Done a few, only in training and they hurt. Trott is using the same tactic as the world championships. Just try and hang in there.
Imagine an olympic competition just for the elimination race
IMAGINE.
I would pay good money to see that.
Trott is so cheeky :')
Love her.
Went to the morning session of the athletics.
to any doubters, let me tell you the stadium is amazing and the scope and atmosphere of the place is immense. Having a sizeable portion of an 80,000 crowd shouting "GB" and going hysterical is quite something. Get yourself a ticket if you can.
Will be there for the paralympics.
Can't wait.
C'mon Trott!!!!
YESSSS!!!
YES
Now that elimination race I can get in to. Good fun.
Are they...playing Party Hard at the Velodrome?
:D
Relegated To 3rd?
Seemingly not.
Not sure what happened...
my my
look at the Dutch hockey team
* Belarussian shotputter
I should've added that the music they play in the stadium is bizarrely indie-friendly
Transmission by Joy Division during the 800, a burst of Animal Collective during the 1500. Stone Roses. Buzzcocks, Happy Mondays...
Everything considered
From the official themes, the bbc, the opening ceremony & the actual music played in the stadium, this is officially the indie olympics.
Oh yeah they played Muse's Olympic song
and the commentator inside the stadium said "well if that doesn't get you going nothing will". lol.
But outside the stadium in the Olympic park
it is the opposite. Some rubbish buskers, The Script being filmed doing a random bit of miming for god knows what. Rubbish music over the PA.
now theyre playing the naked and famous in the stadium.
mental.
They were playing Four Tet in the velodrome the other night.
WHEYYY
volt that pole
Well yeah
the atmosphere in the Olympic stadium is electric.
This Belarusian shot-putter :/

Did any of the LME see this article in the Standard?
A full-page article from one of our rowing heroes moaning about how devastated he is by `only` winning silver. Makes me seethe, and I'm not sure why.
http://www.standard.co.uk/olympics/rowing/mark-hunter-it-hurts-its-just-still-raw-i-cant-watch-the-race-or-even-read-the-papers-8009462.html
Totally with you and I'm quite sure I know why.
I'm not sure whether I blame the athletes or the people who put pressure on them but there's something simultaneously utterly spoiled and utterly bleak beyond all proportion about anyone who sees being the second best in the world at something as some sort of failure. I don't know whether I hate him or want to give him a hug.
I'm not really sure how you can hate him
He's trained insanely hard and is obviously gutted not to have won. Not sure any of us can say how we'd feel in that situation but I'm sure I'd find it hard after coming so close.
The difference, I suspect, is that most of us wouldn't write a column in a newspaper about it
Sure. And I wouldn't begrudge anyone for the emotion in the heat of the moment after just missing them out when they've got so close.
But that article was written a day or two after the event and it's pretty insensitive given there's countless people who probably trained equally hard and didn't win a medal at all or didn't even make the grade for selection.
I don't blame him at all for privately feeling gutted, or even admitting that in interviews straight after the invent but I think actually giving the interview or writing this (whichever it was) after time to reflect shows a lack of sensitivity.
*after the event
not sure what happened there.
Yep, you've nailed it there.
What's he expecting from the article? Sympathy??
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xK9rbwM3omA
Think Bleasdale's gone...
oh holly :(
Love how they keeep cutting back to Holly Bleasdale
They couldn't give a shit about the rest of the pole vault, only because we have someone in it.
Well you can chose to watch all of it if you're so inclined
But the BBC are obviously going to focus on Team GB.
(Plus they are actually showing quite a lot of the pole vault)
Just cut to Cuban and German women vaulting.
You're talking nonsense pal.
yeah, they cut to it after i posted
well done BBC for proving me wrong yet again
:)
Greene hasn't got a prayer here
2nd hurdle killed it for greene

Distinct lack of camel toes at this Olympics, gutted
Great stuff from Ogogo there!

Ever seen Ant Ogogo and Jermaine Jenas in the same room?
Desiree Scott, hard as fucking nails.
Women really can't put a clean tackle in (Ooooh errrr)

Has the BMX been and gone?
Or is it still to come?
Was looking forward to that, seems a bit like the canoe slalom in that it looks like it should probably be in a gameshow. Good fun.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/2012/sports/cycling-bmx
fuck was that dunk
Nick Skelton sounds like he's had quite a few beers
This Argentina v USA basketball game
is really competitive
the NBA all stars are getting a bit rattled
59-60 at half time
good stuff
Just realised that you can have as many silvers and bronzes as you like
if you've got fewer golds than anyone you'll be behind them on the overall table. Is that not a bit silly?
Arguments can be made both ways.
I think some countries do medal tables based on total won. Ther's a fair argument that coming first is all that should count, but it does seem counterintuitive when you have Japan in 18th with 28 medals.
Joshua about to start in the boxing
come on, son
I'm home just in time for this boxing match. I was at the evening
session of the athletics. A great night out. Shame Britain didn't do well in the athletics tonight. Brilliant organization by all at and near the stadium. Well done organizers.
Stephan Feck!!!
